1 G-A1-1 AIRPORT OPERATIONS MANUAL AIRFIELD OPERATIONS 7 March 2014 PART G APPENDIX 1 RADIO PROCEDURES 1. Radio Transmission Techniques 1.1 The efficient use of a two-way radio depends largely on the method of speaking, the choice of words used by the operator and the microphone technique. 1.2 It is essential that standard phrases are used for radio communications, to avoid misunderstanding of the intent of messages and to reduce the time required for communication. 1.3 It is mandatory that IAC-ACC and ATC clearance or instruction, are acknowledged or read back prior to action. 1.4 Basic principles: (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (f) Speak plainly and end each word clearly to prevent consecutive words running together. Use standard words and phrases. Avoid variations in the intensity of speech. Avoid hesitant sounds. Do not shout or accentuate syllables. Preserve the rhythm of ordinary conversation and avoid long pauses.

2 G-A Phonetic Alphabet 2.1 The International Phonetic Alphabet is used to assist in voice transmission of call signs, runway and taxiway designators, and the spelling of proper names and words. 2.2 The phonetic alphabet is made up of particular words to denote the letters. When used, the pronunciation as shown below shall apply: Letter Spoken as Pronunciation Letter Spoken as Pronunciation A ALFA AL-fa N NOVEMBER no-vem-ber B BRAVO BRAH-voh O OSCAR OSS-cah C CHARLIE CHAR-lee P PAPA pah-pah D DELTA DEL-tah Q QUEBEC key-beck E ECHO ECK-oh R ROMEO ROH-me-oh F FOXTROT FOKS-trot S SIERRA see-air-rah G GOLF GOLF T TANGO TANG-go H HOTEL hoh-tell U UNIFORM YOU-nee-form I INDIA IN-dee-ah V VICTOR VIC-tah J JULIETT JEW-lee-ETT W WHISKY WISS-key K KILO KEE-loh X X-RAY ECKS-RAY L LIMA LEE-mah Y YANKEE YANG-key M MIKE MIKE Z ZULU ZOO-loo 3. Numerals 3.1 All numbers except whole thousands and combinations of thousands are to be transmitted by pronouncing each digit separately. Examples: 10 ONE ZERO 75 SEVEN FIVE 583 FIVE EIGHT THREE 600 SIX HUNDRED 5000 FIVE THOUSAND 7600 SEVEN THOUSAND SIX HUNDRED ONE ONE THOUSAND ONE EIGHT THOUSAND NINE HUNDRED THREE EIGHT ONE FOUR THREE

3 G-A Numbers containing a decimal point shall be transmitted as prescribed above with the decimal point in appropriate sequence being indicated by the word DECIMAL. Example: ONE ONE EIGHT DECIMAL FOUR 3.3 Numbers shall be transmitted using the following pronunciation: Numeral Element Number or Pronunciation 0 ZE-ro 1 WUN 2 TOO 3 TREE (or THREE) 4 FOW-er 5 FIFE 6 SIX 7 SEV-en 8 AIT 9 NIN-er Decimal Hundred Thousand DAY-SEE-MAL HUN-dred TOU-SAND (or THOUSAND) 3.4 When transmitting time, the twenty-four hour clock system shall be used, with each digit being pronounced separately. When it is certain that no misunderstanding will occur, time may be expressed in minutes only. 3.5 The readability of the radio signals is categorized as follow: 1 Unreadable 2 Readable now and again 3 Readable but with difficulty 4 Readable 5 Perfectly readable
