Brief description of the programme of study Master's programme The Master in Design programme educates designers with in-depth professional knowledge, methodological skills and professional competence for performance of the profession. The Master in Design programme is a 2-year professionally oriented programme that offers research preparation with specialization in: Interior Architecture and Furniture Design Fashion Design and/or Costume Design Graphic Design and Illustration The Department of Design educates independent designers who are thoughtful, creative, active professionals with expertise in design that enables them to meet the society's needs for relevant and innovative solutions, modes of expression and forms of working. The design programmes at the department are based on a humanistic visual arts tradition and emphasise solutions that contribute to the society's diversity and total quality in both a local and a global context. The Master in Design programme is a project-based programme of study that involves an interaction between professional praxis and critical reflection. The programme puts emphasis on open, experimental design processes and provides praxis-oriented development of design competence. With a basis in the areas of specialization, the programme provides great opportunities for multi-disciplinary professional approaches. The programme of study is well-suited to socially aware and committed applicants who are able to reason and tackle practical, abstract and conceptual problems. The programme attaches great importance to the student's independence, motivation and perseverance. The program is designed for students who only speak English and all courses and academic choices can be implemented without proficiency in Norwegian. The programme is based on the department's research and development work in the field of design. 2

3 The programme of study's areas of specialization Interior Architecture and Furniture Design This specialization has a visual arts approach to the design of interior architecture and furniture. The student's own competence, experience and intuition are the basis for developing a personal, experimental and critical attitude. In the specialization, emphasis is placed on the independent development of ideas, academic reflection, insight, socially aware commitment and conceptual thinking, which can challenge and serve the society in new ways. Various topics and concepts are discussed and developed academically through group work and individual, practical and theoretical programmes of study, which are further related to the student's own project topic. The student selects a project topic within the area of specialization, explores it in a socially relevant and historical context and develops it conceptually and practically into a Master Degree Project. Within the framework of his/her own project topic, the student has an opportunity to do boundary-breaking, interdisciplinary work in the institutes at the National Academy of the Arts that focus broadly design, visual arts and stagecraft. The National Academy of the Arts has a full-scale interior architecture laboratory and advanced digital and material-based workshops. Fashion Design and Costume Design Specialization in fashion design and costume design provides knowledge about the design of clothing that meets various users' needs, ranging from unique theatrical production to a more general use of clothing from a social and cultural perspective. In the Master's programme, the student works mainly within one of the areas: fashion or costume design. Each area facilitates specialised programmes of study in a number of fields that require special expertise. Graphic Design and Illustration In the specialization in graphic design and illustration, the subjects' possibilities and potential are examined and discussed through experimental research, both through practical projects and academic reflection. The programme is arranged with a high degree of professional independence. The students are given time to do research making simultaneous use of their own approach and a professional approach, where they are given academic criticism from the faculty and their fellow students. Through theoretical instruction, personal guidance and plenary discussions, key academic and social topics are covered, and these are related to the individual's own practical experience. An important dimension is systematic and analytical thinking and process-oriented praxis, and importance is attached to developing the student's ability to put his/her own work in a social context. Innovative thinking is encouraged, and boundary-breaking projects are valued. The programme educates students who can take a clear position as future leading practitioners. The programme puts emphasis on challenging the academic discipline and setting the agenda for the future academic discourse The programme of study qualifies for: The Master in Design programme trains qualified practitioners in specialised areas of design for independent performance of their profession at a high level of competence, provides the society with advanced expertise and contributes to the further development of existing knowledge in the fields of design. Graduate designers are qualified to lead design projects and to function as a free and independent agenda setter for new solutions and approaches to design. The programme provides full-fledged professional knowledge, qualifies for admission to the Norwegian Artistic Research Programme as well as a possible further education at the PhD level. 3

4 1.3. Admission The target group for the programme is applicants who want to further develop themselves academically through a profession-oriented programme of specialization or who want a preparatory programme for research in design and their areas of specialization. The Master's programme builds on a 3-year Bachelor's degree (180 credits) in design or an equivalent education that includes design studies of at least 120 credits related and relevant to the specialization that is applied for. Applicants with a lesser scope of design and/or design-related subjects in the degree can also apply for admission if they document that through practical experience they have the equivalent scope and level relative to the specialization for which they apply. Proficiency in English is required. The application shall consist of a completely filled out application form. The following shall accompany the application: Curriculum Vitae An explanation of the choice of area of specialization: either Interior Architecture, Furniture Design, Graphic Design, Illustration, Fashion or Costume Design. A description of a topic within the chosen area of specialization that the applicant would like to develop towards a Master's project. A portfolio with visual and written documentation of professional competence in the area of specialization for which she/he is applying and the professional basis for the chosen project. Applicants will be assessed on the basis of the above-mentioned information they furnish and their potential for development in the design area. Applicants will be assessed on the basis of: prior education and experience professional background as a basis for the development of a project during the programme of study ability to identify, formulate and limit a project topic and the ability to explain its professional relevance The applicants may be summoned to an interview. 5 1.5. Structure and implementation The Master's programme is built up in an interaction between a common core part, the area of specialization and the student's own project. The scope of the studies and/or workload in each course is described in terms of credits. 60 credits are equivalent to one year of full-time study. One credit is equivalent to 25 to 30 hours of actual work for the student. Actual work hours include teacher-directed instruction, lectures, written assignments, seminars, independent studies, etc. Some courses may use a lot of teacher-directed instruction, whereas other courses require students to do more independent work. The courses in the first year develop a broad, in-depth competence in the area of specialization and the project topic. Professional praxis is linked to theory, methods and social context. The students in the Master in Design programme can take part in an exchange as part of the 2nd semester of the first year. 6 1.6. Teaching and learning methods The teaching in the programme is grounded in art-, research- and experience-based knowledge and is closely tied to the professional development in the Department of Design. The programme of study is project-based, where the project topic at the time of admission is of key importance. The project topic is refined and further developed throughout the programme of study in cooperation with a supervisor and forms the basis for the Master Degree Project. The programme of study includes teacher-directed instruction, supervision and independent work. The forms of working may include courses, studio work, lectures, a syllabus, workshops, excursions, reviews, presentations and both individual and group exhibitions, assignments and projects. The programme of study requires a high degree of independence and willingness to specialise for relatively long periods of time in professional questions. The student is assigned a principal supervisor for the Master Degree Project. A contract is signed that specifies the Master Degree Project's working title, work schedule as well as the time allotted for supervision and the rights and duties of students and supervisor(s). The contract shall be signed by the dean, student and supervisor(s). Studio-based supervision is a key part of the instruction. The coursework requirements for the programme of study include: submitted work, portfolios, presentations, syllabus completion of all assigned tasks in each course by the scheduled deadlines for submission active participation in compulsory instruction at least 80% attendance Further information about requirements is included in the course descriptions. There may be opportunities for field trips in Norway and abroad during the programme of study. Regulations on absences and leaves are specified in the 'Forskrift om studiene ved Kunsthøgskolen i Oslo' ('Regulations on studies at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts') Coursework requirements must have been approved in order for the student to receive a final assessment in the individual course. The courses are assessed on the basis of the learning outcomes that have been set for each individual course. Forms of assessment may consist of presentations, exhibitions, continuous reviews, tests, written work, portfolios The courses are assessed in a collaboration among the course coordinator, internal teacher and external teacher. The Master Degree Project is assessed by one external examiner and two internal examiners. All courses in the first year of study must be passed in order to begin the second year. All courses in the programme are assessed by the awarding of either a pass or a fail grade. Further information about the forms of assessment is presented in the course descriptions. This provides a basis for critical reflection by indicating the design work's place in: social context design thinking debate/discourse design research method and process communication and presentation of results interdisciplinary cooperation The course provides a basis for contextualising the theme of the student's own project. The course consists of a number of introductory workshops that combine practical forms of working with theory, and an interdisciplinary project with a focus on design methods and context under the topic of "socially responsible design". 9 Teaching and learning methods Teaching is conducted in workshops with theoretical and practical work, along with projects with lectures, individual and group supervision and self-study. The course also emphasises observation, analysis, interpretation and reflection. Part 1: Critical professional praxis The students work with a critical attitude to their own praxis. Short projects are carried out, which are analysed and critically discussed. The students are trained to assess their own and others' work on the basis of critical professional methodological approaches. 10

11 Part 2: Storytelling The students work on storytelling in graphic design and illustration. Important theory in the field is studied and various experiments are conducted in the telling of specific stories. The students also examine historical and contemporary examples of storytelling in specific academic fields. Part 3: Information gathering and research The students work on methods for gathering and processing information and visual material. Through searches in archives, book collections, etc., the students learn how to find materials for their own projects. Based on the gathered material, the students work on presentation and communication. Emphasis is given to the ways in which the material is transformed into graphic form and illustration. Emphasis is also given to the choice of media, form of presentation and the quality and details of craftsmanship. Part 4: The student's own project area The students work on examining and limiting their academic field of interest. By examining and analysing historical and contemporary examples, the students gather references that are set up against and in connection with their own praxis. The collection is analysed and critically assessed and presented and discussed in the study group. In addition, the student works on his/her own professional praxis and explores various materials, techniques and modes of expression. Project The student links a chosen problem to an academic topic through an experimental project. Emphasis is placed on method and process, materialization, documentation and reflection. Part 1: Context The course is preparatory for the student's choice of a Master Degree project. The course deals with general topics such as transformation, inclusive design and sustainability and recycling in an interior architectural and furniture design context. These topics are discussed in connection with academic concepts such as functionality, flexibility, quality and materiality. The student relates the chosen problem to a self-chosen, experimental specialization project in one of the topics. Part 2: Professionalism The course prepares the student for independent activity as a practitioner in the fields of interior architecture and furniture design. The student is introduced to relevant profession-oriented issues and scenarios that are discussed and interpreted. The course gives the student time and opportunity to explore a design area that is relevant to the student's specialization. During part 2, the student further develops his/her ideas for the Master Degree Project. Part 1: Own expression The student works on his/her professional approach and own mode of expression. In a number of experiments and minor projects, the student's own mode of expression is explored. Through his/her own work, guidance and group discussions, the professional approach and personal mode of expression are further developed. The students both challenge their own praxis and work on refining their own mode of expression. Part 2: Own project On the basis of the experiences with information gathering and storytelling, the students shall work on a selfdefined theme and design a minor project within the fields of graphic design and illustration. Through the experiences from "Own approach" and "Own expression", the project is put in an academic context and is considered in relation to the work of others in the field. Through the experiences from "Critical professional praxis", the project's results are critically assessed both together with a supervisor and in the group. The student's own project shall be connected to a relevant professional network. 14

16 Brief description of the course Specialization 2 builds further on Specialization 1. This course gives the student time and an opportunity to explore various aspects of specialization and the project topic and to gain practical experience from national and international professionally oriented activity. The course includes a survey of knowledge about professional partners and suppliers. The course facilitates specialization and the preparation of the upcoming work on the Master Degree Project. Fashion: The student works on one or more actual and/or experimental design projects related to his/her project topic. Costume design: The student works toward a specific production. This project entails that the students work on communication through a presentation, an exhibition or a fashion show. This work is related to knowledge and reflection on social context, profession and professional praxis. Design entrepreneurship involves the integration of ethics, social values and economic values in business models. Learning outcomes On completing the course, the student shall: have a knowledge of contemporary professional praxis have a knowledge of the establishment of his/her own professional praxis be able to reflect upon and relate to the relationship between entrepreneurship, his/her own project and praxis be able to analyse and develop a value-based business model Teaching and learning methods Teaching is conducted in workshops with theory, lectures, and both individual and group tasks, individual and group supervision and self-study. This answer consists of both practical and written work. The pre-project must be passed before the student can begin with the Master Degree Project. The Master Degree Project shall show the candidate's independent professional competence and comprehension of professional development work. It shall show the student's ability to formulate, plan and complete an academic project and to be able to experiment, critically examine and reflect upon professional work, including cases when it is set in a social context. Choice of theories and methods, work process and results shall be documented together with the communication of ideas, message and technical documentation so that the project may be assessed in its entirety. The student him-/herself is responsible for the completion of the project in collaboration with his/her supervisor. In cases where technical assistance has been used in the process and in the finished product, it shall be made explicitly clear what the student's work is and what has been produced by others. The name and/or firm shall be stated together with a specification of the work. 19

20 The Master Degree Project shall be communicated to the public through an exhibition and/or through some other suitable documentation, presentation or publication under the direction of the National Academy of the Arts or the faculty.
