5 Social Challenges SC responds directly to the policy priorities and societal challenges identified in the Europe 2020 strategy and aiming to stimulate the critical mass of research and innovation efforts needed to achieve EU s policy goals. All the activities shall take a challenge-based approach, focusing on policy priorities without predetermining the precise choice of technologies or solutions that should be developed.

6 Social Challenges The emphasis shall be on bringing together a critical mass of resources and knowledge across different fields, technologies and scientific disciplines in order to address the challenges. The activities shall cover the full cycle from research to market, with a new focus on innovation related activities, such as piloting, demonstration, test-beds, support for public procurement, design, end-user driven innovation, social innovation and market take-up of innovations. Also Social Science and Humanities are needed here!

7 SC2: Bioeconomy Activities under Societal Challenge Food security, sustainable agriculture and forestry, marine and maritime and inland water research and the bioeconomy aim at making the best of our biological resources in a sustainable way. The objective is to contribute to securing sufficient supplies of safe, healthy and high quality food and other bio-based products, by developing productive, sustainable and resource-efficient primary production systems, fostering related ecosystem services and the recovery of biological diversity, alongside competitive and low carbon supply chains. This will accelerate the transition to a sustainable European bioeconomy, bridging the gap between new technologies and their implementation.

8 EU bioeconomy The EU bioeconomy already has a turnover of nearly 2 trillion and employs more than 22 million people, accounting for 9% of total employment in the EU. It includes agriculture, forestry, fisheries, food production, as well as parts of chemical, biotechnological and energy industries. It encompasses the sustainable production of renewable biological resources and their conversion, as well as that of waste streams into bio-based products, biofuels and bioenergy.

9 EU bioeconomy The diverse bioeconomy sectors have a strong innovation potential due to: their use of a wide range of sciences life sciences, agronomy, ecology, food science and social sciences, enabling industrial technologies biotechnology, nanotechnology, information and communication technologies (ICT), and engineering, as well as local and tacit knowledge.

10 HORIZON 2020 impacts Work in combination with stronger innovation drive and reinforced policy interaction prescribed by the Bioeconomy Strategy, impacts to achieve: 45 billion added value and create new jobs in bioeconomy sectors by 2025 Every euro invested in bioeconomy research and innovation under Horizon 2020 will generate about 10 in value added. Contribute to the Commission's Europe 2020 goal on moving to a low-carbon economy by 2050 Contribute to the flagship initiatives "Innovation Union" and "A Resource Efficient Europe".

19 Danish Bioeconomy strategy in Horizon 2020 Hearing: about 70 provided input to Bioeconomy alone The Danish reference group found 7 areas that they recommended be prioritized Writing groups described the 7 priority areas The strategy was sent to the Commission mid-june with a positive response The strategy will help to ensure recognition of Danish input to future work programmes.
