Wiradjuri Cultural Park Welcome to Country First Workshop, Dubbo 2013 NARRATIVE WORK WITH FAMILIES Late in 2012 Sofia Lema, Senior Project Officer from the Aboriginal Health Medical Research Council (AHMRC) Social Emotional Well-Being (SEWB) Workforce Support Unit contacted The Indigenous Program at The Bouverie Centre to run a series of six Narrative Work with Families workshops, for regional SEWB workers attending the first Workforce Support Unit Regional Forums in locations across regional NSW. DESCRIPTION OF TRAINING The six one-day workshops utilised practice-based learning to provide a clear introduction to the key ideas and practice of narrative therapy keeping family in mind. It covered: Why Narrative ideas can be a good fit for Aboriginal families Stories in Culture Building hope and motivation for change What gets in the way of change Building engagement with families Using externalizing conversations Questions to use with families Frameworks for families to tell their stories Using the Tree of Life activity in therapy The workshop format ensured plenty of opportunity for discussion of issues, both personal and client-focussed and that there was a mix of presentation, pairs and small group exercises that kept Culture and workers experiences at the centre of the training. 11
Workers identified a wide range of learnings taken from the training. The following list summarises those learnings: Externalising conversations Dealing with problem not person, problem is the problem Helping clients to separate themselves from their problems Listening carefully to the clients own story Listening for the exceptions and the positives in clients lives To listen to the experience of clients and walk a mile in their shoes That narrative is essential to work in Aboriginal communities The Name Game Final Workshop, Inverell
What s coming up in Two new training programs of the Post Graduate Degree in Family Therapy are to be delivered by the Bouverie Centre s Indigenous Program in This first will be in Cooktown Queensland. The Post Graduate degree in Family Therapy, will be delivered by Banu Moloney and Shaun Coade and of cause Kerry Proctor. This follows on from a five day family skills training package, delivered in The second training program is in Shepparton. What s exciting about the training is that it is the second time the Post Graduate degree in Family Therapy will be delivered in the Shepparton region. Further to this, some of our graduates from the 2008 training cohort will be involved with the delivery of the 2014 training. The funding for the 10 positions in this training round has been provided by Rumbalara. See below a position description which may interest you!! 13
Calling Australia s leading family practitioners! The Cape York Family Centre (Cooktown) BlueCare Indigenous Services (BCIS) is seeking to recruit, from across Australia and New Zealand, six skilled family practitioners to be part of a new development of national significance funded by the Australian Government. Commencing by June, 2014, you and your immediate family will live for two years in our staff housing in historic and scenic Cooktown, North Queensland. 1. Purpose The Centre s purpose is to provide intensive family therapeutic care, as part of the Cape York welfare reforms, to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families at high risk of breakdown through alcohol and drug use and related mental and physical health problems. 2. Provider Blue Care Indigenous Services is one of Australia s leading providers of Indigenous aged and community care. Our services include Stagpole Street Alcohol and Drug Service, Townsville, Hollingsworth Aged Care, Cairns, and Star of the Sea Aged Care, Thursday Island. We are a notfor-profit organisation and part of UnitingCare Queensland, the health and community service provider of the Uniting Church. An Aboriginal Leaders Council provides local cultural governance to the Cape York Family Centre. 3. Concepts We will use the skilled application of evidence-based and practical family therapy concepts adapted to the cultural environment of each family. Family is broadly defined as a group of Indigenous people, including infants, children, young people and adults that intend living together and caring for each other in the future. A family must have an adult member who wants to transform the lives of those in their family. Up to 20 families each year will complete up to 4-6 months intensive family care as residents and then return to their original, or other, Australian communities with our continuing support for months to ensure a stable and safe family, secure housing and a pathway to economic independence. The location is a Wilderness Lodge, located on a large natural rural property in a picturesque setting, comprising ten self-contained houses, community centre, and cool water features. 4. Our leadership team You will work with peers who include other leading family practitioners from across Australia and New Zealand who will each also bring their discipline skills such as welfare, social work, psychology, medicine, nursing, teaching, and outdoor experience. You will have responsibility for working very intensively with just a small number of high needs Indigenous families all the way from initially visiting and assessing them in their own local Cape community, travelling by road with them to Cooktown and coordinating their treatment and care at our new residential family centre out of Cooktown. You will then work with them to manage their transition back to community living including transitional housing and coordination of their support and vocational services. 14
THE AUSTRALIAN ASSOCIATION OF FAMILY THERAPY (AAFT) is holding the Annual Family Therapy Conference for 2014 in Sydney on the 30 th and 31 st of Oct at the Novotel. With AAFT s growing awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander family healing approaches, the association is truly positioned is at the cutting edge of Healing Families on a global scale. This conference presents a wonderful opportunity for YOU to present your work at the conference. IF you have an idea, no matter how large or small, of something you want to present at this conference and would like to discuss this further, contact Banu Moloney, Kerry Proctor or Robbie Latham. b.moloney@latrobe.edu.au k.proctor@latrobe.edu.au r.latham@latrobe.edu.au 15
