1 WOW A L L T H E N E W S F R O M T H E W E E K O N W A T E R ICF World Cup - Poznan, Poland, May 6-8 World Cup 1 was held at Poznan over the weekend with some fantastic performances from the Aussie paddlers! The picturesque setting of Lake Malta in Poznan, Poland played host to the first ICF World Cup on the calendar for athletes from 38 countries competed at the event with the paddlers putting in some fantastic performances despite having to overcome the ice laced water and strong head winds which were a feature of the three day event. The Australian team won three medals in Poznan, with Alana Nicholls the star claiming her first elusive medal at a World Cup when she place second behind German Nicole Reinhardt in the K1 500m final on Day two to claim the silver medal. Nicholls also won a bronze medal after powering home in the women s K1 200m final on day three. The women s K4 500m team featuring Lyndsie Fogarty, Hannah Davis, Naomi Flood and Rachel Lovell (above), won a bronze medal on Saturday behind the powerful crews from Portugal and Belarus, with the latter winning the gold medal. following shoulder surgery when she lined up in the final of the women s K1 1000m, finishing in fourth position. I had 5 months out of the water and then some restrictions on my training since starting back paddling, so it s not the preparation I would want coming into the international season but it will just allow me to keep improving and hopefully by World Championships I will be back at my best. 2 Hannah Davis - ICF Athlete of the Month (May) Hannah Davis was recently named ICF Athlete of the Month (May). It s been a terrific month so far for the South Australian after being appointed to the ICF Athlete s Commission and winning a Bronze medal for Australia in the women s K4 500m final in Poznan over the weekend. I feel both thrilled and privileged to have been elected as a member of the ICF Athletes Commission. As an internationally active athlete, I believe I will be able to make contributions based on the experiences of today s athletes. Davis celebrates winning a bronze medal Davis is currently training in Munich with her fellow Australian compatriots ahead of the second ICF World Cup commencing in Racice, Czech Republic on May 20. For the full ICF interview with Davis visit: Alana Nicholls wins her elusive World Cup medal Alana Nicholls continued her terrific form from Nationals into the World Cup in Poznan on the weekend winning her first elusive world cup medal when she finished second behind Germany s Nicole Reinhardt in the women s K1 500m final on Saturday. I was surprised at how good i was feeling leading into the 500s taking into account that we only arrived into Europe on Wednesday. I was just happy to have made the A final in the 500m so to come out with a silver is fantastic. Nicholls (left), K1 500m podium After a slow start out of the blocks, Nicholls had a strong middle section of the race to power home to claim a bronze medal in the K1 200m final on day three of competition in Poznan. In an intriguing final less than half a second separated the top five with Poland s Marta Walczykiewicz and Germany s Nicole Reinhardt finishing ahead of the Western Australian. The Western Australian is currently training in Munich ahead of World Cup 2 commencing on May 20. I am looking forward to having a big week training in Munich, to fine tune a few aspects of my races that I was not happy with. Full story at

3 ICF launch Video on Demand The ICF have launched video on demand for the 2011 World Cup events. The finals from the world cup in Poznan can be watched through their website. ICF Live TV at Munich Camp Commences All members of the National Senior sprint team have arrived in Munich, Germany for an intensive training camp that will prepare the paddlers for the World Cup 2 event commencing in Racice, Czech Republic on May 20. The athletes are enjoying the sunny conditions and great training facilities. Munich Course Head coach Martin Marinov said, the facilities in Munich are great, we are currently working on new combinations for the men s and women s K2 and K4 teams ahead of racing in Racice The Munich course allows us to measure exact time splits and speed during every effort. We can then distinguish with our instruments the very small differences between different crews/boats, which is something that is impossible to measure back home with tidal water and permanent breeze. Men s K2 paddlers Stephen Bird and Jesse Phillips will be looking for an improvement at Racice following a disappointing performance on the final day at Poznan. Steve and I are determined to make a good show in Racice after having a horrible Day 3 of competition in Poznan - suffering the full effects of jet lag on our most important day. We will be working on a few technical improvements leading into WC2 which has an identical race program, said Phillips. 4 White Water Week - A great success! WW Week concluded on Sunday, with the week a big success for all the athletes and coaches that participated. The week consisted of an intensive block of specific competitive training activities, with assistance from AIS providers. Head Coach Mike Druce said, the squad were able to access a broad range of servicing provided by the AIS during the week including Skill acquisition from Ric Schuttleworth, three sport psychology sessions Rosalyn Lawrence at Bradys lake in March with Alex Gorman, massage with Vince Consentini, presentation on training, monitoring with the new GPS Heart rate monitors from Darrell Bonetti, Skinfolds and Nutrition screenings from Erin Michael and Physiotherapy from Pat Weston. the athletes got really good value from the AIS providers. New gates were set up to simulate the challenges the paddlers would be facing in Bratislava later in the year. The slalom athletes will continue to train hard in preparation for World Cup 1 commencing in Tacen, Slovenia in June. Slalom Team Captains Will Forsythe and Leanne Guinea have been named Australian Slalom Team captains. The announcement was made at the conclusion of White water week on Sunday. It is a great opportunity for the duo to lead their country when the Slalom team travels to Europe shortly to compete in their first World Cup event in Tacen, Slovenia starting on June 25. Forsythe said, It s a great honour to be team captain, hopefully I can bring something new to the team.
