Burmeister & Wain Energy A/S Shanxian Biomasse CDM projekt i Kina er gennemført med teknologi fra BWE og i samarbejde med Energistyrelsen Burmeister & Wain Energy A/S Lundtoftegårdsvej 93A DK-2800 Kgs. Lyngby Denmark Tel/fax /

History of BWE Company founded in 1843 First steam boiler supplied in 1852 First Benson once-through boiler in 1952 World record - above 47% in efficiency for a coal fired utility boiler in 1999 Worlds largest USC Biomass fired boiler in 2001 Biomass plants for straw, wood chips, among others Owner History Part of Lentjes in 1980 Part of Deutsche Babcock in 1991 Part of FLS Miljø in 1997 Part of the Italian STF S.p.A. in 2002 BWE India founded in 2009

Base of Shanxian Project 700 million tonnes straw are produced in China as residues of agricultural production Used for direct burning for heating and cooking by farmers result is heavy air pollution and very low level of heating efficiency. The Shanxian Biomass Power Plant first power project using biomass in China The Chinese new Renewable Energy Law encourages development of power plants using biomass to compensate shortages in energy supply and to reduce the severe environmental pollution. The local farmers can benefit by supplying straw as fuel for the biomass power plants. This will: assist the domestic economic development, contribute to reducing poverty simultaneously decrease the air pollution

Shanxian Project Participants National Bio Energy Co.,Ltd (NBE), was established in 2005 as a shareholding company with a registered capital of 500 million RMB The biggest investor in the majority shareholder is the State Grid Corporation of China. Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (DANIDA). DANIDA is one of the public entities in Denmark involved in the procurement of Certified Emission Reductions (CER s) through Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects and Emission Reduction Units (ERU s) through JI projects to help Denmark to achieve its targets under the Kyoto Protocol. COWI Consulting (Beijing) Co., Ltd is a daughter company of COWI A/S with the headquarters located in Denmark. COWI has been helping the Chinese clients to develop CDM projects. COWI A/S has worked with carbon trading since 1995.

CDM in relation to Shanxian International climate projects, as the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and Joint Implementation (JI), are a part of the flexible mechanisms of the Kyoto Protocol. The objective of these mechanisms is to ensure cost-effective and sustainable emission reductions. The achieved reduction in greenhouse gas emissions generated by the projects is transferred as carbon credits to Denmark and used as a supplement to meet our international climate commitments. For project host countries, the mechanisms provide measures for the transfer of capital and modern technology promoting economic growth and a cleaner environment. As an example the Danish Energy Agency s has assisted China in the replacement of an old polluting coal factory by a biomass plant. This is an example of a well executed CDM project that have transferred Danish technology and promoted sustainable development. In addition to the project a reduction in greenhouse gas emission has generated carbon-credits.

Shanxian 30 MWe Biomass Plant Engineering Contract to BWE on March 7, 2005 by The Hong Kong based China Biomass Energy Contract comprised: Basic engineering for boiler island of a 30 MWe biomass fuelled plant in Shanxian, Shandong Province of the Peoples Republic of China. The boiler is a drum boiler of 36.2 kg/s steam at 88 bar and 537 C BWE water cooled vibrating grate combustion system BWE air sprouts for the intake of fuel. The fuel is wood chips and cotton stalks. Installation started January 2006 Plant was in commercial operation by the end of 2006.

CER agreement with China BWE technology in CER agreement with China January 17, 2007, the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs signed an agreement for purchasing certified emission reductions (CER) from National Bio Energy Ltd., Peoples Republic of China.

CO2 net reductions in Shanxian Net proposed project emission reduction = Total baseline emissions - Total project emissions The annual total baseline emissions are: 130,214 tco2 The annual total project emissions are: 3, 111 tco2 The annual net emission reductions are: 127,102 tco2 Total net emission reductions in the first crediting period from 2007 to 2014 are: 889,716 tco2

Coal an opportunity to reduce CO2 Industrial revolution was based on coal Today 39% of the world s power production is based on coal Coal reserves are immense (more than 200 years) Coal compared to oil is less exposed to fluctuations of price and availability Coal consumption for power generation is going to double in the next 25 years Today coal is considered the black devil in terms of CO2 emissions.

Coal an opportunity to reduce CO2 But the world is increasing the use of coal Newly industrialized countries continue to construct new coal fired power plants Industrialized countries continue to use coal in low efficiency coal fired power plants How to overcome this apparent contradiction?

Coal an opportunity to reduce CO2 Some numbers!!!!! World wide coal fired power plant average efficiency is 30% (480 gcoal/kwh electricity) State of the art BWE Ultrasupercritical power plant efficiency can reach 45% (320 gcoal/kwh electricity). Increase of efficiency of a power plant from 30 to 45% reduces the consumption of coal (from 480 to 320 g/kwhe ) consequently reduces the CO2 emissions with 33% Future technology development increases efficiency to 50%

Coal an opportunity to reduce CO2 The Sugar Cubes: Relative CO2 index emissions of coal fired power plants around the world World average Europe average BWE USA average Increase the efficiency of coal fired power plants

Coal an opportunity to reduce CO2 A pragmatic approach Implementation of BWE high efficiency power plant technologies throughout the world s old coal fired power plants could bring down the worldwide emissions of CO2 from: 5.5 billion tonnes/year to 3.6 billion tonnes/year a straight cut of 1.9 billion tonnes/year Future implementation of carbon capture systems (CCS) will bring the emissions of CO2 to virtually zero Implementation of high efficiency technology is needed before implementation of CCS, as CCS decrease plant efficiency with approx. 10%

Danish Energy technology Export Shanxian Biomasse CDM project carried out by BWE and Energistyrelsen to be used as a step towards global exsport of energyproduction technology based on e.g. Biomass Reduce the CO2 emission by increasing the efficiency of power plants Retrofit existing plants to multifuel Finance projects by CO2 reductions Integrated energy systems is the answer to the world s energy need: high efficiency thermal power plants combined heat and power renewable energy BWE have the technologies and well proven
