antivirus slows down my PC free antivirus is just as good as paid antivirus BUSTED two antivirus programs are better than one... and more the top ten myths about antivirus software a Special Report from pcantivirusreviews.com
/// MYTH 1: ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE IS A SCAM. IT'S USELESS. Sadly, too many people believe antivirus software is useless or that viruses are a myth. Anyone who's ever had a virus, spyware, trojan, key logger, or other malware knows these infections are all too real. Typically, people who face infections are those without any antivirus protection. Antivirus software really does make a difference. /// MYTH 2: ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE MAKES YOUR PC SLOWER While second-rate antivirus software will put a noticeable drag on your system even during normal day-to-day PC use, good antivirus software won't. Running a full system scan will, of course, put some extra load on your PC, but even then with good software your PC should still remain usable. /// MYTH 3: ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE MAKES YOUR PC FASTER The opposite myth to antivirus software making your PC slower is that it will somehow make your PC faster. If your PC has a virus or other malware, removing the infection can often help restore performance. Otherwise, in cases where a PC is clean, antivirus software will have no affect on speed.
/// MYTH 4: ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE CAN'T PROTECT AGAINST NEW VIRUSES New viruses are challenging to detect. Two features in good antivirus make it possible: 1. realtime protection 2. heuristic detection Together, these features make it possible for a brand new virus to be stopped in its tracks, even if the virus had never been seen before. It might not look like one, but if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, good antivirus software labels it a duck. New Viruses Available Now! /// MYTH 5: FREE ANTIVIRUS IS AS GOOD AS PAID ANTIVIRUS The big differences between paid and free antivirus are: features and tech support. FREE!! kindly ignore the hidden fees if you need help Free antivirus is a stripped down, bare-bones way to go. Protection is minimal. It's like wearing a helmet while riding a tricycle on the highway: unsafe at any speed, helmet or not. With free antivirus you're stuck with two options: poor support or no support. Well, unless you're willing to pay for it. (We've seen prices as high as $400!) /// MYTH 6: WINDOWS COMES WITH ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE. YOU DON'T NEED ANYTHING ELSE. Yes, Windows does include antivirus software. No, there's no one to call if you need help. Oh, and it's also the very first thing the bad guys attack and defeat. There's also no way to manage its settings or even run it by hand.
/// MYTH 7: IF YOU DON'T DOWNLOAD FILES, YOU CAN'T GET A VIRUS In a recent study by Symantec, you're more likely to get a virus from a church site than from an adult (aka porn) site. How's that? Adult sites are businesses. They're run by professionals. It's their JOB to make sure things run well. That means no viruses and no drama. Church sites are often run by volunteers. No one is monitoring the church site day-in-and day-out watching for break-ins by hackers uploading viruses to infect the PCs of unsuspecting parishioners. /// MYTH 8: ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE IS THE SAME AS INTERNET SECURITY Basic antivirus software is just that: basic. Internet security software includes ALL features of basic antivirus and adds important extra security features. Typically, you get a software firewall and a malicious website filter to help prevent virus infections and identity theft. /// MYTH 9: ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE IS THE ONLY SECURITY I NEED Antivirus software is a piece of the security puzzle. A software firewall is another part. (Luckily good Internet security software includes it.) A personal VPN is another part. So's backup software. Antivirus software is a good start. But it's not everything.
/// MYTH 10: IF ONE ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM IS GOOD, TWO ARE BETTER Running two or more antivirus programs together at the same time can have the opposite effect you intend and can make your computer less secure. It's a bit like trying to park two cars in one parking space: it never ends well. /// MYTH 11 (BONUS): MACS DON'T GET VIRUSES Many Apple users still think Macs can't get viruses. The reality? They're just as susceptible to viruses as PCs and are becoming even more enticing to virus writers because of the false sense of security Mac users have. Now that you know about the myths and hype, it's time to get serious about protecting your PC. STEP 1: DON'T LEAVE SECURITY TO CHANCE. Protect yourself against hackers, crackers, criminals, and identity thieves. STEP 2: STAY EDUCATED. Knowing the dangers is half the battle. STEP 3: CHOOSE WISELY. [Click here for our top picks for protecting Mac OS X here.] /// NOW WHAT? SECURING YOUR COMPUTER We tested the top 10 Antivirus Software and Internet Security Suites on the market today and compared their effectiveness and performance. In our tests we looked at virus detection and prevention, firewall effectiveness, ease of use, resource usage, and technical support.
