1 Getting Started Guide IAR Game Controller Experiment! kit using STMicroelectronics STM32F429II This guide briefly describes how to get started using IAR Embedded Workbench and run an example application on the target system STM32F429II-EXP. For more detailed information, see the IAR Embedded Workbench IDE User Guide, which also contains the C-SPY hardware debugger documentation. This document can be reached from the Help menu in the IAR Embedded Workbench IDE. Kit The IAR Experiment! kit is a combination of an easy and fast way to check out features of a new device. The evaluation board is a straight forward board with all ports of the device easily accessible. The evaluation board is also equipped with a number of UEXT/UXT connectors. These connectors support three serial communication interfaces I2C, SPI and RS232.

3 Install IAR Embedded Workbench for ARM and activate your license 1 Install the IAR Embedded Workbench for ARM. The installation contains all the software you need to get your development project up and running. 2 The first time you start IAR Embedded Workbench for ARM you will need to activate your license(s). Once you start the application you will go straight into Information Center. Information Center is the starting point where you can find everything from technical documentation to example applications. 3 The first time you start using the IDE, the License Wizard window with the request to activate your license appears. Fill in the license number you previously received via , and click Next. 4 You will be able to choose between a code-limited and time-limited edition. We recommend the kickstart edition which has no time limit for the IAR Experiment! kits. The example applications later used are created within the code size limit. After the registration, the license number will be sent to you via within a few minutes. 5 If you want to switch between license numbers (for instance KickStart and evaluation license), you can do this from the License Manager from inside the IDE. For further information, see the IAR Embedded Workbench, Licensing Guide, available from the User Guide section of Information Center. Setting up the evaluation board After you have installed the software, you should set up the evaluation board according to following instructions: 1 Plug the LCD UEXT module into the UXT1 connector on the evaluation board, and the GameController UEXT module into the UXT2 connector. 2 Use the debug probe of your choice. The examples provided are using J-Link as the default. 3 Power up your board by either the USB, JTAG connector (pin 19) or the trace connector (pin 11&13). Both J-Link and I-Jet can be used to power up the board through the JTAG or Trace connectors.

4 Running example applications When you have installed and set up all the software and hardware, it is time to try out one of the example applications provided with IAR Embedded Workbench for ARM. To run the example application, you must have some working knowledge of the IAR Embedded Workbench IDE. For a quick introduction, see the tutorials in the ARM IAR Embedded Workbench IDE User Guide, available as a PDF from the USER GUIDE section that is found in Information Center. The example described here is Snake which will let you use the GameController to control the snake game displayed on the LCD. 1 From the Start menu, start the IAR Embedded Workbench IDE by choosing All Programs> IAR Systems> IAR Embedded Workbench for ARM x.xx >IAR Embedded Workbench. You will get straight into the IAR Information Center for ARM. 2 Click EXAMPLE PROJECTS. Figure 1- IAR Information Center for ARM 3 Select the chip manufacturer ST and device family STM32F4xx. 4 Select the evaluation board IAR-STM32F429II-EXP. 5 Select the Snake project 6 Choose a destination folder to save a copy of this project for testing, so that the original project will not be updated for any changes you made during testing. Read the Example description in the Editor window or the readme.txt file included in the project 7 Click the Make button on the toolbar. The project should be compiled and linked without errors (you can ignore the warnings). Figure 2 - The Make button

5 8 Click the Download and Debug button to download your program to the evaluation board. 9 The file Main.c is now open in the Editor window and the program is stopped at the start. Click the Go button to start the application. 10 Wait for the instructions on screen to start the game. 11 Use the joystick to change direction of the snake to eat apples and avoid walls. 12 To stop C-SPY, click the Break button. 13 To exit C-SPY, click the Stop Debugging button. You can now try some of the other example applications. Remember to read the Readme.txt included in each project.

8 Troubleshooting If you are unable to find the cause of a problem, try resetting the evaluation board by using the reset button on the board. Then restart the C-SPY Debugger in the IAR Embedded Workbench IDE. You can also try disconnecting and reconnecting the power to the evaluation board, pressing the reset button and then restarting C-SPY.
