A More Inclusive Capitol City Able SC staff spent three days this summer providing Disability Sensitivity and ADA Title II training to employees of the City of Columbia. Over 300 of the city s staff participated in order to confidently work with and serve Columbia residents with disabilities and remove barriers to accessibility. The Departments represented ranged from Parks and Recreation, Business Licensing, Administration, Planning and Development, and Utilities. Participants were trained to spot accessibility issues and address them so that City of Columbia services will be available to all. Photo: Able SC Staff Member Robbie Kopp presenting behind a podium to a room full of City of Columbia staff members. Independent Living Nationwide At the end of July, four members of the Able SC staff, including one Equip Leader, attended the National Conference on Independent Living in Washington, DC. At the conference they learned more about what others Centers for Independent Living are doing across the country. Exchanging ideas and experiences with others helps Able SC to continue to increase support for young adults in transition, contribute to accessible transportation, and increase community support for South Carolinians with disabilities. During one of the days in DC, Able staff rallied with other conference members to participate in a march for independent living that concluded at Capitol Hill. Over the course of their trip, Able SC staff got the opportunity to meet with legislators and staff members of the DC offices of Senators Graham and Scott, as well as Representatives Mulvaney, Wilson, Sanford, Clyburn, Gowdy, and Duncan, in order to raise awareness about disability issues. Photo: A collage featuring Able SC staff members posing with Congressman Joe Wilson, standing in front of the Capitol building holding rally posters, and speaking outside with Congressman Mark Sanford.
Be EmployABLE: What Can You Do? Having a disability doesn't keep an individual from having an active career. People with disabilities can work and the jobs they hold vary with each individual's abilities and talents. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a federal civil rights law that was passed in 1990 and went into effect beginning in Title I of the ADA protects qualified individuals with disabilities from discrimination in employment, but he or she must fulfill the skill, experience, education, other job-related requirements of the position pursued or held. A person with a disability must be able to perform the essential job functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation. Ticket to Work is a federal program designed to assist individuals ages who receive SSI or SSDI with finding a job, receiving training, or other employment assistance. Employment networks like Able SC work with people with disabilities to examine their employment options and build up their career skills. Photo: National Disability Employment Awareness Month Poster. The back of a woman in a wheelchair with the words, Expect. Employ. Empower. What can YOU do? DID YOU KNOW? Individuals with disabilities can request a reasonable accommodation in writing and in person at any time during the application process or while they are employed. Accommodations can be requested even if a person did not ask for one when applying for a job or after receiving a job offer. If a person is not sure what accommodation they need, they can go ahead and let their employer know that they need an adjustment or change at work because of a medical condition. Then, the individual and the employer can explore accommodation options together. To research accommodation options, explore JAN's on-line accommodation publications at Working is more than earning a paycheck; it provides purpose and the chance for individuals with disabilities to lead independent, self-directed lives. To be successful, individuals need to understand their rights, the supports they may need on the job, and the skills necessary to perform responsibilities in that career field. To develop your employment skills, understand your employment rights and how to negotiate reasonable accommodations, join Able SC in our Columbia Office from 2:00 4:00 p.m. for these upcoming hands-on informative training classes: November 12, 2014: Practicing Effective Interview Techniques

(Left) Dream Camp participants playing different types of drums. (Right) A dream camp participant who uses a power chair in a helmet and harness for the ropes course. The weekend of September 5-7, 2014 Able South Carolina partnered with Family Connection of South Carolina to host and implement the first ever Dream Camp: a weekend retreat for young adults and their parents. This weekend-long event was held at Pleasant Ridge Camp and Retreat Center in Marietta, South Carolina, an accessible camp site that had tons of features to make the facilities accessible for individuals with disabilities: accessible bathrooms, roll-in showers, curb cuts and flat roadways to access different buildings, a roll-in pool, and wheel chair ramp access to the zip line, ropes course, and campfire sites.the purpose of Dream Camp was to provide young adults with the tools they need to successfully plan for their future and help them transition from dependent young adults to independent adults. It was also a place for parents and family members to be provided with tools on how to empower independence and self-advocacy in their child(ren). For young adults, the focus of their sessions was on building self-esteem and self-advocacy by learning about their needs and wants, as well as about the Disability Rights Movement. For parents, their sessions focused on the importance of empowering versus enabling their child(ren) and how to foster self-advocacy and independence. Young adults
and parents also met in combined groups to create a detailed plan that specified what each young adult's next steps were in terms of college, career plans, family planning, etc. Dream Camp was a huge success and allowed for young adults and their parents to communicate in an open and honest way about how to successfully transition into the next phase of adulthood. The impact that Dream Camp had on family goals and expectations, communication, and self-esteem was priceless. We look forward to co-hosting Dream Camp with Family Connection of South Carolina next year! A Healthier Union County Able South Carolina is excited to be offering Healthier Habits for a Happier You, a health program for Union County residents funded by United Way of the Piedmont. Healthier Habits for a Happier You is a free series for individuals with disabilities ages 16 and older who want to learn more about making better choices to improve their health. Participants who have any type of disability or chronic health condition are invited to attend. We have made it convenient for busy schedules by offering both evening and morning sessions. Eating healthy, exercising, managing stress, solving problems and setting goals are all key components to everyone being healthy and happy. This series is unique in that it is tailored for individuals with disabilities who may have not been given information in a way that is relevant specific situation. For instance, at Healthier Habits, individuals with physical disabilities can learn exercises adapted to their needs. Get Equipped! Photo: Participants of Able SC s Healthier Habits Series enjoy a morning at Subway. Training facilitator and Able SC Independent Living Specialist, Amy Austin, discusses healthier menu choices when eating out Equip is a way for young adults with disabilities across the state to connect with each other and learn skills to become successful selfadvocates and leaders in their communities. Three Equip leaders were selected as delegates to attend the Youth Leadership Forum at Newberry College for a three day workshop in July. They learned skills to become active agents of change in their communities by fighting for civil rights. Two YLF participants became Equip Leaders after learning about selfadvocacy through YLF and the Equip Summer Series. Photo: Two smiling young adult females holding signs. One sign states, I m a good listener. The other states I feel good about myself!
At the beginning of July, Equip was featured at Blowfish baseball game in Lexington County in order to promote the group in the community. Jonathan Rich, an Equip participant, threw the first pitch of the game and Bryann Burgess gave an interview about the purpose of the group. During July and August, over 60 young adults participated in the second annual EQUIP Summer Series, which was held both in our Midlands office and in our Upstate office. Photo: A photo collage of the Blowfish Baseball game. A young adult standing on the pitcher s mound, another holding a mic speaking to the crowd, and four pictures of the crowd smiling and holding up signs in support of Equip. Get Happy for the ADA! Able staff and Equip Participants created a flash mob in front of the Columbia Museum of Art on July 26 to commemorate the 24th Anniversary of the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Dancing to the song, "Happy" by Pharrell, they proved that people with disabilities can be happy, successful, and active in their communities, further promoting the continued need for the ADA. The video is available on YouTube and was shared on social media by many national disability organizations. Photo: Able SC staff members and Equip participants dancing in front of a fountain. Success is Sweet! Isaiah Williams is a 21-year-old male from Greenwood, South Carolina. He came to Able to get assistance with accomplishing his goal of successfully completing the HSAP test. Able SC connected him with tutoring resources, and after much hard work and studying, Isaiah passed his test! He immediately starting working on a new goal to attend college. Isaiah wants to work in the field of construction, and refuses to listen to the naysayers who believe his disability prevents him from doing so. Isaiah is now enrolled at Piedmont Technical College and has survived his first few weeks. Isaiah now wishes to work on money management so that he can set up his own housing situation.
His Independent Living Specialist has been there every step of the way encouraging him to keep dreaming bigger and offering practical solutions when he encounters a barrier. Way to go, Isaiah! Photo: ILS Angela Deese and Consumer Isaiah Williams sitting next to each other and smiling. Chez Makins is a 21-year-old with autism who is living in Greenville, SC. When he came to Able SC for assistance with budgeting, time-management and housing, he was working two jobs and studying hard to pass the GED. Chez discovered that the best way for him to manage his time was to get organized with a personal calendar, where he wrote down all of his deadlines and responsibilities for the weeks ahead. Within a short period of time he passed his GED and was accepted into a program at Greenville Technical College. His next goal was to work on budgeting in order to pay for a place to live near campus. Able SC s Area Coordinator, Kat Tracy, assisted him with budgeting through a variety of methods; he used a phone application for and also used budgeting worksheets, which projected what cost of living may be for him in the future. Chez recently moved into an apartment with three of his friends, is attending Greenville Tech, and working just one job at a local computer store. He is also engaged to be married! Keep it up, Chez! Photo: Consumer Chez Makins standing in the Able SC office. Save The Date! You do not want to miss out on your chance to dance the night away, take home some incredible auction items, and show your support for some individuals and organizations in the community who are doing amazing advocacy work.
