2 A note from our Patron Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club boasts some of our community s hardest working and talented volunteers, all of whom perform a valuable service by helping to keep the City s pristine coastline safe. Through tireless dedication and a commitment to excellence, Mullaloo SLSC is constantly achieving tremendous success both in competition as well as in its management and operations. Over the course of the season, the Club provided more than 11,000 hours of volunteer patrols, water safety activities and patrol hours during abalone season, and they were victorious at the State titles in the Open Male Surf Boat Rowers and Open Lifesaver Relay events, while the Club s Juniors were champions for the second successive year. The City of Joondalup has been a proud and long-time sponsor of the Mullaloo SLSC and has worked closely with the Club s patrol teams responding to potential emergencies. We look forward to continuing that highly successful partnership for many years to come. The redeveloped Tom Simpson Park, opened recently with a community celebration supported by the Club, has improved amenities within the Mullaloo Beach precinct and the reaction to the new upgraded facilities from the local community has been very pleasing. The Club now focuses on its future with this strategic plan, identifying its goals and priorities as well as measuring the Club s success against these targets while reflecting a strong commitment to excellence in operational and management areas. Mullaloo SLSC is conscious of the need for a strategic plan that meets the needs of the community and its members. The Club is both a valued protector and an icon of the City s coastline, allowing residents and visitors to safely enjoy the wealth of ocean and coastline that we are fortunate enough to have in our City. 3 Introduction Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club has a proud history of over 50 years of dedicated community service to the local area. This document will outline the long term strategic vision and direction that will be undertaken to ensure its longevity, continued service and connection with the local community. A direction that not only will benefit the members of the Club but also the community members and residents of the City of Joondalup and all who visit our wonderful beach. P a g e 3

4 Our Journey Mullaloo an Aboriginal word meaning Place of the Rat Kangaroo and Kangaroo Watering Hole (thus Kangaroo in Club Logo), is located 20km North of Perth, within the City of Joondalup (previously Shire of Wanneroo). During the early fifties the population of the Shire of Wanneroo was only about 2,000. Mullaloo beach was relatively isolated and an unknown rural area, only accessible by bush track. Tony Martin a local policeman was directly responsible for the idea to form the Mullaloo SLSC. His strategic view to develop a surf lifesaving club realised considerable objection by the local community. With his local presence and with a little help from his close friends the club was formed. Tony became the founding president and eventually a Life Member. A local pioneer, Margaret Cockman, recognised as the Freeman to the City of Joondalup in 2007 recalls that Tony Martin, Jack Hastings, Ted Scott, herself and a cohort of other young people would frequent the beach as a social activity. When Jack Hastings, (retired Petty Officer) died in a road traffic accident in 1961, this group of individuals collected donations to create a memorial for their friend. The success of their collections was enough to start the construction of the first clubrooms. In 1965 Mullaloo SLSC was incorporated with the Surf Life Saving Association of Western Australia. Since that time the Mullaloo SLSC have remained progressive in many areas, with major extensions in 1971, which included the construction of a community hall. In 1978 the boatshed and the Hall were finally joined together. In 1991 the City of Wanneroo built a new facility to take The Club into the future. At the time this was a modern building and reinforced to the public the value of having a local surf lifesaving club, the membership at this time was approximately 450 people. The club was ultimately planning for membership growth. The final extension in the year 2000 was the result of intense strategic planning which resulted in a combination of funding between the City of Joondalup, Lotteries Commission of WA and the Mullaloo SLSC. The building was set to cater for a membership of 2000 individuals which will see Mullaloo SLSC rise to this challenge over the next five years. In 2005 the Mullaloo SLSC was recognised by the national body, Surf Life Saving Australia as the Club of the Year. Mullaloo was rated against over 300 surf lifesaving clubs for its services to its members and to the local community. At Mullaloo we re proud award winners of the state equivalent for three consecutive years. Mullaloo SLSC continues to grow and is recognised as one of the premier surf life saving clubs in WA if not Australia. Why is this so? We strive to maintain our relevance and promote our own identity; We look for innovation through continuous improvement; We play an integral role within our own community and remain proud of our volunteer commitment. P a g e 4
