JOYFUL LIVING: THE JOY OF SACRIFICE Phil. 2:17-18 INTRO.: 1. ILLUST: I want to begin this AM by telling you the story of a man by the name of Abraham Bininger. a. Abraham was born in Switzerland in the 1700 s. 1) As a young boy, he and his parents left their homeland and bordered a ship for America. 2) During the journey both his father and mother died and were buried at sea. 3) While just a boy he found himself in a strange land where he knew absolutely no one. 4) However he never let his misfortunes hold him back. b. As a young man he professed Christ as his Savior and became a preacher. c. After hearing of the great misery and poverty among the blacks on the Island of St. Thomas he sought to travel there to preach the gospel. 1) Upon his arrival he discovered that it was against the law for any person but a slave to preach to the slaves. 2) The reason for this was that it was the policy of the plantation owners to keep the blacks in ignorance and superstition. 3) Shortly after finding this obstacle to his plans Alexander sent a letter to the governor of the island. a) In the letter he pleaded with the governor to allow himself to be made a slave for the rest for his life. b) He promised that he would serve as a slave faithfully, providing he could give his leisure time to preaching to his fellow slaves. 4) The governor in turn sent the letter to the King of Denmark who was so touched by the willingness of Alexander to sacrifice his freedom for the gospel that he sent an order the allowed Abraham Bininger to preach the gospel whenever and where ever he choose, to black or white, to slave of freeman. 2. I used the story of Abraham Bininger to illustrate the sacrifice that some people will make in order to see that the gospel of Jesus Christ goes out to those who have never heard it. a. Here was a man who was willing to give up his very freedom for the true freedom of preaching the gospel. b. Sadly, today we live in society where we still have great freedom to preach the gospel of Christ, yet we rarely exercise that freedom. 3. As Christians we need to realize that the Christian faith is a faith of sacrifice. a. Christianity as we know it has its roots in the Old Testament. b. And as we read the Old Testament we find that it is a book full of laws and commands that deal with sacrifices. c. But as we come to the New Testament we see the fulfillment of those sacrifices, and the call for the people of God to make sacrifices not of animals but of themselves. 4. Today, as we continue our series in the book of Philippians, we come to 2 very interesting verses where Paul talks about the joy of sacrifice: Phil. 2:17-18: (Read). 5. This AM I want us to go back through this passage and look at what Paul really said and how it applies to our lives as we choose to live for Christ on a daily basis. LESSON: I. Let us begin by noticing the imagery Paul used in our text. A. Paul mentions his willingness to be poured out as drink offering on the sacrifice and service of the Philippian brethren. 1. Paul was willing to sacrifice his life and mix it with the sacrifice of these brethren. 2. Perhaps Paul was even referring to his willingness to even be martyred for the cause of Christ. 3. He used the same terminology in 2 Tim. 4:6 where he was facing eminent death: For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come.

Page 2 B. The imagery Paul used here is taken from the Old Testament sacrifices. 1. Notice Numbers 4:4-10: (Read). 2. In the Old Testament a drink offering was often made along with the offering of a lamb, ram, or bull. 3. Thus, Paul was saying that he was willing to be that drink offering that went along with the sacrifice the Philippian people were offering up, that is the service of their faith. C. The sacrifice of the Philippian people Paul referred to is found in the previous verses which we have recently studied (2:12-16). --It involved: 1. Their sacrifice of working out their own salvation. 2. Their sacrifice of allowing God to work in them. 3. Their sacrifice of a self-controlled life. 4. Their sacrifice of being a shining light in a world darkened by sin. 5. Their sacrifice of holding fast to the word of life. 6. There are the sacrifices that Paul was willing to pour the sacrificial oil of his life over. D. Also notice that Paul said that these sacrifices were given with joy and rejoicing. 1. In making this observation, Paul was dealing with the law of sacrifice. 2. The law is that sacrifices need to be and should be producing joy and rejoicing in the life of the giver. 3. Giving something to the Lord should cause our hearts to be filled with joy to the point that we rejoice in our sacrifices. 4. The point of Paul was saying here is that sacrifice equals joy. 5. Joyful living is found in the sacrifices we make to and for God. II. With this terminology in mind, let us notice the type of sacrifice Paul said that we ought to be giving to have this joy. A. Sacrificing something just for the sake of giving it up or sacrificing something so others can see how holy we are, will not produce the joy which Paul speaks of here. 1. Giving of our leftovers or of that which costs us very little will not produce the joy Paul referred to here. 2. What we need to realize is that this joy only comes when we realize that we ourselves are to be that sacrifice. 3. Paul put it this way in Rom. 12:1: I urge you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. B. There are three things mentioned in Rom. 12:1 that tells us what kind of sacrifices we need to be if we are going to have joy st : We are to be a living sacrifice. a. Within the Scripture we see two excellent examples of living sacrifices. 1) The first is found in Genesis 22 with the story of Isaac. a) Isaac willingly put himself on the alter and was willing to die as a sacrifice to the Lord. b) He was willing to be obedient to God s will even if it meant his death. c) I am sure you probably remember the rest of the story of how God sent a ram to take his place. d) But in one sense, Isaac did die - in the sense that he died to his own will. (1) He yielded himself to the will of God. (2) When Isaac stepped down from that alter he was a living sacrifice. e) NOTICE: We often see this as a test of Abraham s faith, but it was also a test of Isaac s faith. f) Isaac was willing to be God s sacrifice and he lived to tell all of how God delivered him.

Page 3 2) The second example of a living sacrifice is our Lord Jesus Christ who is the perfect example of a living sacrifice. a) In obedience to His Father s will, He died as a sacrifice for our sins. b) But He rose again on the third day, and is today reigning in heaven as our living sacrifice. c) He was willing to sacrifice his life and do the Father s will, even if it meant going to the cross. b. So from these two examples we can see what it is to be a living sacrifice. 1) It means putting to death the desire to do our own will and doing the will of the Father. 2) It means putting to death the fleshly nature that dwells in each of us, before we can live for God. 3) In Rom 8:13 Paul put it this way: For if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. c. So let us put to death the deeds of the body, that is, let us cease doing those things which are contrary to the will of God, that we may indeed become living sacrifices nd : We are to be a holy sacrifice. a. The word Holy means sacred, pure or blameless. 1) The point is that God has high standards. 2) To come before Him we must be holy, sacred, or set apart. 3) God wants us to present ourselves to Him without spot or fault. a) We are to consecrated ourselves or set ourselves apart for His work. b) We are to be instruments for Him. 4) But we cannot hope to become a holy sacrifice on our own. 5) It only comes through the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit which occurs through our faith in Jesus Christ. b. In the Scripture God is said to Holy, Holy, Holy. 1) This means that He is set apart for all creation. a) He is the essence of that which is sacred, pure and blameless. b) And because He is holy He calls us, who are His children, to be Holy. 2) 1 Peter 1:15-16: But like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, "You shall be holy, for I am holy. c. So a Holy sacrifice is one that is blameless, one that set apart to do the will of God rd : We are to be an acceptable sacrifice. a. The word denotes that which is well pleasing, or the best. 1) In other words God does not want our leftovers He wants our best. 2) God does not want second place in our lives, He wants, in fact He demands that He be first. 3) Thus, as living sacrifices to the Lord we need to be giving God our best in all areas of our life. b. The point is that for our sacrifices to be acceptable they need to be just that sacrifices. 1) To offer God something that cost us nothing is not an acceptable sacrifice. 2) To offer God lest than our best is not an acceptable sacrifice. c. Let us notice a couple of illustrations from the scriptures of an acceptable sacrifice: 1) 1 st : The widow in Mark 12: a) The widow s sacrifice was small but it was acceptable. b) Here we learn that it is not the size of or sacrifice that is important, but rather what it cost us - Is it our best? 2) 2 nd : David in 2 Sam. 24. a) In this story David had sinned against the Lord and he was told to go to the threshing floor of a man by the name of Arau-nah, and built an offering there and sacrifice there. b) Arau-uah tells David to just take whatever he needs for the sacrifice free of cost. c) Listen to David s answer: 2 Sam. 24:24: However, the king said to Araunah, No, but I will surely buy it from you for a price, for I will not offer burnt offerings to the Lord my God which cost me nothing. So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.

Page 4 d) David wanted his sacrifice to be acceptable to the Lord. (1) He knew that if cost him nothing, that it would not be acceptable. (2) If it cost him nothing it would not be a sacrifice. d. Sadly, this is a point that we have often missed in our society today. 1) Many times we make sacrifices that cost us nothing. 2) Sometimes it may be in the form of money when we say, Well I guess I can give a little extra to the church this week, I have some left over. 3) Sometimes it may be in the way of service when we say, Well I ve got nothing better to do, I guess I can stop by the church and do whatever. C. So we see what type of sacrifice Paul calls for us to be. 1. This is the type of sacrifices that the Philippian brethren were. 2. Because they were this type of sacrifice - living, holy, and acceptable - it brought joy to them. 3. And when we are this type of a sacrifice to the Lord, it will bring joy to us as well. III. Another thing that Paul points out in our text is that this sacrifice is derived from our faith. --The Philippians sacrifice was a result of their faith. A. The fact is that our sacrifice is in direct proportion to our faith. 1. The greater our faith the more we sacrifice to God, and the more we sacrifice to God, the greater our faith becomes. 2. Please understand that without faith, sacrifice is meaningless. 3. It is essential that we have our faith in the one that we are making our sacrifices to. B. So what is this faith which brings about sacrifice? --To answer this question let us notice some things about faith that will produce a desire in each one of us to be living, holy, and acceptable sacrifices st : We need to have faith in the right object, which is Jesus Christ. a. We will by nature make sacrifices to that which we have placed our trust and faith. 1) We see this in pagan religions that have make rocks and trees their gods. 2) They offer sacrifices to those gods and trust in them to bless them. b. But in Acts 4:12 Peter said: And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men, by which we must be saved. c. To have faith in anything other than Christ leaves one with no hope of being a living, holy acceptable sacrifice to God. d. So when we place our trust in Jesus Christ we by nature should desire to make sacrifice for Him nd : We need to have a faith that removes doubt. a. Many Christians are doubters. 1) They doubt God will bless them for their service and sacrifice. 2) They doubt God will remain true to His promises. b. But faith is optimistic. 1) Heb. 11:1: Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2) Faith takes God as His word. 3) Faith assures us that there will be joy with sacrifice. 4) Faith will bless those who give their best to God rd : We need to have a faith that dispels fear. a. I think many of us are not the living sacrifices we should be because of fear. 1) Fear of failing, fear of embarrassment, fear that God will not bless us, or fear that we may have to go without something we really want; can keep us from having a deep abiding faith in God. 2) But if our faith is what is should those fears will be dispelled. b. In Mark 5:36 Jesus said to the father of the daughter who had died: But Jesus, overhearing what was being spoken, said to the synagogue official, Do not be afraid any longer, only believe. c. Jesus is telling us the same thing today.

d. He is saying: 1) Do not be afraid at having to give up something you really like. 2) Do not fear giving your time or talents in service to God. 3) Have faith in God and He will bless you richly. Page 5 IV. So what can we learn from what Paul said in this passage to the Philippians that can apply to us today in the 21 st century? A. 1 st : We learn the law of sacrifice. 1. We see that it is true sacrifice that will produce joy within us. 2. This is a joy that comes from our Father above. 3. Giving back to God from what He has richly given us - be it our lives, our time, our talent, our money, or our service - giving of all these things in a sacrificial manner will produce joy. B. 2 nd : We learn that we ourselves are to be that sacrifice. 1. Being a living sacrifice means putting to death our own will and living in the will of God. 2. We are to be holy sacrifices, set aside for the work of the Heavenly Father. 3. We are to be acceptable sacrifices, giving to God our best, and placing Him and His will first in our lives. C. 3 rd : We learn that our sacrificial life is derived from our faith. 1. As one increase so will the other. 2. Proper faith will remove doubt and fear and allow us to be the sacrifice and make the sacrifice which the Lord desires from us. 3. That faith must begin in Jesus Christ. 4. In fact, for any of this sermon to make sense you must have a proper relationship with Jesus. a. Now when I say faith in Jesus I do not mean that you believe that He lived 2000 years ago and that He came and taught many wonderful things. b. What I mean is that you need to trust in Him as your personal Savior and commit your entire life to Him. CONC.: 1. The only reason Paul could write this letter of joy to the Philippians was because of their faith in Jesus Christ. a. They realized that they were sinners and that they needed a Savior. b. They realized that they could not make it to heaven on their own, or by their own good works. c. They realized that they needed Jesus, and that Jesus alone could give them eternal life. d. They realized that only Jesus could forgive their sins, and that He alone died for their sins. e. They realized that in His sacrifice on the cross He paid the price for our sins. f. And because of that realization they gladly accepted the gospel and were baptized into Christ where their sins were forgiven and they were now the recipients of eternal life. g. Realizing this they would gladly and joyfully make any sacrifice needed as it was small compared to what God had awaiting them. h. And this is the realization each one of us must have as well. 2. So I ask each person here today to examine yourself. a. Have you placed your trust and faith in Jesus? b. Are you counting on Him and Him alone for eternal life? c. Have you given your life to Him in obedience to the Gospel and being baptized into His death? 3. If you do not know the Lord Jesus as your Savior, if you do not have a personal saving relationship with him, then I would love the opportunity to show you from the Bible how this is possible, and what you need to do to be saved. 4. If you are not in a saved relationship with Christ then I would love to show you how you can enter into the Kingdom of God, and begin to be the living, holy, and acceptable sacrifice you need to be.
