2 2 RECTOR S MESSAGE Our university has been rapidly growing in an advancing and changing world with aims of building a future in a self-generating manner, managing knowledge via scientific research, and raising individuals for the community. Since the day of its foundation in, our university has been closing in on its objective of becoming one of the leading institutions with the dedication of its administrative and academic staff. Having constantly grown since its foundation, our university initially consisted of 2 faculties, 1 higher education institution, and 9 vocational schools, totalizing 17 units; now is academically active with 8 faculties, 1 conservatory, 3 institutes, 3 higher education institutions, 11 vocational schools, 7 research and development centres, and 5 divisions, a total of 38 academic units. With our competent and adept academic staff, modern and well-equipped campus, and our innovative understanding of education, we are offering to our students a modern education of high quality which they really deserve. We always stand for our students and society aiming high and attempting at excellence with our student-focused educational programmes, international cooperation, and social responsibility related projects that we continuously conceive and implement. This booklet you have in your hands has been prepared in order to provide you with information about Namık Kemal University and help you get acquainted with our university. Prof. Dr. Osman ŞİMŞEK Rector EDUCATION Access to Information The Central Library helps users access the right information in an efficient manner. Aside from the essential printed collections, the number of electronic sources available at our library is increasing every year. There are wireless internet access, DVD lounge, and study areas at the Central Library. Our library database is accessed from all over the world and some 2000 users benefit from our library collections every day. In the new academic year, the Central Library is open 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. 300 Mbit/sec internet speed is available on our university campus. There is high speed internet access offered from every point on our campus. address is provided automatically to every student on registration at our university. Our university provides easy access to announcements on social media like Facebook and Twitter, and via its website designed to be compatible with mobile devices and Android applications. 3

3 Foreign Language Our university offers foreign language education providing proficiency in professional, cultural and social life as per Common European Framework of Reference for Languages standards. Interactive Education Model with a U Model of maximum 25 students is offered in our foreign language preparatory education and students are instructed in 2 Web based Multimedia Language Laboratories financed by Higher Education Council and Ministry of Transportation, Maritime and Communications. In addition, students engage in reading activities according to their proficiency levels guided by our instructors in our Independent Language Learning Centre with sources in English. Centre for Continuing Education (NAKSEM) Our Centre for Continuing Education organizes training programmes and offers courses based on the concept of Lifelong Learning providing the students with certifi cates to enrich their CVs for better employment opportu nities. The courses of the programmes are available to all students and upon their successful completion the partici pants receive Certificates of Participation and Certificates of Achievement. Our programmes include YDS, Practical English, Basic English, Auto Cad, Organic Agriculture and Agricultural Practices, Business English, Are CIS 9.3 Geographical Information Systems, Adobe Photoshop, and 3D Studio Max Trainings. Centre for Distance Learning (ZEM) Since its foundation during the academic year, our Centre for Distance Learning has implemented and offered a number of courses such as Turkish Language 2 and Atatürk s Principles and History of Turkish Revolu tion for the Departments of Economics and Business Ad ministration of the School of Economics and Administra tive Sciences. In the academic years to come, our Centre plans to open various new programmes related to both undergraduate and master studies, among which Voca tional Computer Programming, Economics and Business Administration, Nursing, Theology, In-Service Training, Certification Programmes, and Webinars

4 Application and Study Centre for Scientific and Technological Research (NABİLTEM) NABİLTEM is an important unit of our university which has been established to assist the research and analysis that various industrial enterprises, higher education researchers, and state institutions require in their scientific and technological endeavours. The Centre supports research by providing the latest infrastructure opportunities and devices such as DNA Sequence Analysis Device, Real-Time PCR, UV Transilluminator and Documentation System, Flow Cytometer, and many others. INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS Research and Application Centre for Women Studies (NAKSAM) NAKSAM is a newly established unit at our univer sity having as its main purpose the implementation and strengthening of the scientific research, training, and prob lem-solving activities related to women studies on national and international levels. Namık Kemal University Research and Application Centre for Turkish Language and Education (TÖMER) The Centre has been established with the aim to assist the educational process of our students and to raise the awareness and interest of the students and community on the whole with regards to Turkish civilization as to spread nationally and internationally the genuine values of Turkey, in particular those related to its language, literature, and culture. Research and Application Centre for Balkan Studies (BALKAM) The Centre has been founded to implement and assist the current research on Balkan history, economy, politics, and social and cultural phenomena, as well as the organization of various national and international conferences, symposiums and round-tables, and the co-production projects on the Balkans involving national and international govern ment agencies and non-governmental organizations. Academic Cooperation Agreements: Our university pays special attention to academic mobility which means academic cooperation, by means of which the visiting scholar expands his or her teaching experience to new geographical areas and also expands his or her academic contacts for further professional development, whereas the students encounter a different approach, or come across new developments in their domain of studies. Our university has signed a great number of international academic cooperation agreements with various universities around the world. This effort, beneficial for both students and teaching staff, aims first at our youth in formation and relies on our belief that international cooperation and the experience gained from different countries and universities would make important contribution to our students scientific improvement. In the framework of the signed cooperation agreements, the students and lecturers have the chance to become for a time part of a foreign university s academic and scientific background to share, increase and strengthen their knowledge and expertise. 6 7

5 Erasmus Exchange Programme: Namık Kemal University became a member of the large family of the Lifelong Learning Erasmus Programme in the academic year. Since then, some 235 students and academic and administrative staff have benefited from Erasmus Exchange Programme in matters of studying, teaching and training at various European higher education institutions. In addition, many European students and academicians have visited our university every year to share their knowledge and experience. As a partner in the Erasmus Programme, our University has signed 89 bilateral agreements with 75 universities from 18 countries. These numbers increase continually with new agreements which are being signed every academic year. Farabi Exchange Programme: Exchange programmes among Turkish universities are also in effect at our university, which enable students to continue their education and academic staff to embark on teaching activities in other higher education institutions in our country. Until now, our university has signed bilateral agreements in the framework of Farabi Exchange Programme with 55 universities. Mevlana Exchange Programme: Mevlana Exchange Programme is another important exchange programme which enables our students and academic staff to further embark on their education and research activities in various national and international higher education institutions. This programme was implemented at our university in Leonardo Da Vinci Exchange Programme: Leonardo Da Vinci Exchange Programme has been established with the aim to support and develop the vocational education policies in EU and candidate countries. It also enables national institutions to cooperate with similar institutions of Europe, and to share innovative methods and applications, by which improving the professional skills and expertise of the participants. 6 AND INDUSTRY COLLABORATION Technoparks: The newly established technology parks of our university are situated on our main campus in Tekirdağ and that of the Faculty of Engineering in Çorlu. We cooperate with industrialists, universities, and research institutions with the aim to support the country s industry and to provide our own contribution to the country s economic and industrial growth as to make it competitive and based on export. Centre for Technological Advancement (TEKMER): The Centre came into effect to support cooperation between businesses and entrepreneurs, research and development, projects on innovation and industrial application jointly by KOSGEB Namık Kemal University Rector s Office, Thrace Progress Agency, Tekirdağ Chamber of Industry and Commerce, Çorlu Chamber of Industry and Commerce, and Çerkezköy Chamber of Industry and Commerce. Sector Integration Education: Our university believes that the ties with industry offer mutually assured development and in this respect it integrates learning into the world of industrial production, offering to our students an opportunity to work in industrial places for a certain number of hours per week during their university studies. By this innovative model called Sector Integration Education, which is unique and developed by our institution, the university has successfully solved the problem of the students learning practice. Moreover, this way our students find opportunities for future employment after graduation. An example would be our senior students at the Çorlu Faculty of Engineering who participate in work projects in the local industrial zone or in their own businesses during a year, three days a week. Also, the students of our Vocational School of Health carry out their training in our university s clinical and research hospital. Similarly, a Full Practice Education Model is provided for the students of Çorlu Vocational School and Tekirdağ Vocational School of Technical Sciences in collaboration with various industrial factors. Other departments at our university also implement studies based on practice integrated education model, in particular the departments of the Faculty of Agriculture

8 Accommodation Our students do not encounter any accommodation problems. They can easily find lodgings opportunities in state as well as private dormitories and all dormitories are equipped with the necessary facilities to live, study, and relax after classes, including reading rooms, gyms, canteens, and cafeterias. Ayşe Menger Student Dormitory for Girls, located on our main campus, has a capacity of 107 students. All dormitories belonging to the General Directorate of the Credit and Dormitories Agency in Tekirdağ, Çorlu, Çerkezköy, Hayrabolu, and Şarköy, meet the accommodation needs of most of our students. There is a state dormitory close to the main campus with a capacity of 1312 beds, of which 616 beds are for male and 696 for female students. A Campus Dormitory for Girls with a total capacity of 410 beds has recently opened its doors to our students. There are also many private dormitories and hostels available and it is also possible to rent moderately priced flats in Tekirdağ. Catering Lunch and dinner, prepared by our cooks under the control and planning by specialist dieticians and food engineers, are served in a healthy, orderly manner under hygienic conditions in refectories on our campus in order to meet the nutrition needs of our students and staff. Health Services The University Research and Clinical Hospital serves the public and the students with its experienced team of doctors and advanced technological equipment in order to uplift the social life quality and contribute to the advancement of medicine

9 SPORT Among our campus buildings is the newly built and brought into service sports centre. It includes indoor sports hall, swimming pool, fitness and aerobic rooms, sauna, squash, Turkish bath, and Finnish bath. Outside, there are walking and running tracks. Our students and staff are invited to join various sport activities, and the sports and recreational facilities which are offered to them correspond to a hygienic and healthy environment. Students and staff can benefit from the opportunities of our sports complex by applying online. Our experienced trainers offer fitness, swimming, and Pilates sessions, and Latin and traditional dancing classes at our indoor sports centre to enrich the lives of Namık Kemal University students and employees, to improve their physical condition, and to contribute to their general welfare. A new stadium with a covered grandstand and a capacity of 4,000 people is being under construction on our main campus

10 STUDENT CLUBS Our university places great importance on physical and psychological development of our students and employees, and on those learning, cultural and sports experiences which help improve their condition. In this respect, our university has organized a great number of classes and clubs which offer free of charge educational, cultural, and sports activities. The aim of the Health, Culture, and Sports Department at Namık Kemal University, which is in charge of student club activities, is to sustain the physical and mental health of our students and personnel, help them spend their free time in accordance with their hobbies, introduce them to new activities, give them the opportunity to improve their talents and character in a healthy manner through a number of facilities, and finally, in addition to recreation and entertainment, assist them in acquiring the habit of working together with discipline and responsibility. Under the supervision of our instructors and trainers with expertise in their respective areas, students and staff are encouraged to become members of different clubs and to attend various classes which are organized according to their requests and preferences, and are provided free of charge in our cultural and sports educational centres. Nowadays, some 50 clubs have been founded by our students, which represent an integral part of the organization of different scientific, cultural, artistic, and sports activities in order to enrich the students free time and increase the number of social and cultural opportunities. Students aiming to improve themselves outside the established curriculum may apply to become members of these clubs at the beginning of the academic year or later, during the academic year, at their convenience. Apart from these clubs, for the benefit of both students and staff, a number of free of charge classes related to some 25 different domains have been organized. The only thing you need to do in order to take part in these classes is to apply via for students, and for academic and administrative personnel. 11 INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Namık Kemal University is one of the most dynamic among the newly accredited universities in Turkey, pro viding higher education of high quality standards of a relatively low cost. In this respect, one of our primary tasks is to operate on an international level. We welcome international students to join our comprehensive curriculum which includes more than 165 undergraduate, master, doctoral, post-doctoral and life long education programmes of study. Especially attrac tive is the offer of the Institute of Natural and Applied Sciences for graduate studies, which includes such mas ter and doctoral programmes as Biology, Environmen tal Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Electronics and Communication, Agricultural Economics, Mechani cal Engineering, Textile Engineering, Plant Protection, Soil Science, and others. The Institute of Social Sci ences provides master studies in Health Management as a joint programme of the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences. Also, the Institute of Health Sciences offers a number of master programmes, namely Anatomy, Medical Bio chemistry, History and Ethics of Medicine, and Car diovascular Physiology. Currently, 279 international students from 31 dif ferent countries study at our University, including countries such as Af ghanistan, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Germany, Morocco, Iraq, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Lebanon, Mongolia, Moldova, Uzbekistan, Russia, Turkmenistan and Greece. In addition, located in Tekirdağ, an important city in Easter Thrace in the European part of Turkey, and just 150 km from Istanbul, Namık Kemal University offers to students great opportunities for extracurricu lar activities. For master and doctoral studies, the international students are invited to apply by accessing the University web site the corresponding to particu lar Institute web site, or contact by phone or the administration of the Institutes. For undergraduate and associate studies, the interna tional students are invited to apply for studies at by accessing the University web site to find detailed information on the latest valid application procedure and then by filling in the particular form which is provided by Office of Student Affairs for relevant academic year. Original application forms must be submitted to the Office mentioned above by hand or by postal mail. Cost of Living Estimated living expenses for all international stu dents are around Euros per month, including accommodation and other personal expenses. Visa Students from certain countries must obtain a valid student visa from the nearest Turkish Consulate in their country. They should make sure that there is enough time for the Embassy/Consulate staff to issue visas. The passport expiry date should be later than the departure date until which a person intends to stay in Turkey. This visa is required for registration at the University and must be obtained before entering Turkey. Insurance The University Research and Clinical Hospital serves the public and the students with its experienced team of doctors and advanced technological equipment in order to uplift the social life quality and contribute to the advancement of medicine. Exchange students who study at our university in the frame of Erasmus Programme are advised to buy a health insurance package which covers their health expenses that may incur during their study in Turkey
