2 AL SKINNER BOSTON COLLEGE 10 HEAD COACH Al Skinner is in his 16th season as a collegiate head coach and his seventh season as Boston College s head coach. Skinner was introduced as the Eagles head coach on April 17, In his first six seasons on the Heights, Skinner has established the Boston College program as a constant contender for BIG EAST titles and a perennial player on the national stage. His coaching abilities have already resulted in two BIG EAST regular-season crowns, one BIG EAST Tournament title and three postseason tournament berths. After leading BC to NCAA Tournament bids in 2001 and 2002, Skinner guided last year s team to a berth in the National Invitation Tournament. In the last three seasons, Boston College has won 66 games, the second-highest three-year total in program history. In and , Skinner led the Eagles to back-to-back 20- win campaigns for the first time since BC teams accomplished the feat in the early 1980s. The Eagles impressive 20-win campaign in came on the heels of what many might call the best and possibly most surprising season in school history. In , the Eagles were selected fifth in the BIG EAST s seven-team East Division. Yet Skinner and his staff used an aggressive, up-tempo style to gain victories. By year s end, Boston College had registered a school-record 27 victories, while capturing the East Division s regular-season crown and the 2001 AT&T BIG EAST Championship Tournament title. The Eagles earned their first NCAA Tournament bid since 1997, defeating Southern Utah in the first round, before finishing the season with a loss to Southern California. At year s end, Skinner collected several well-deserved accolades. First, he captured BIG EAST Coach of the Year honors. Later, he gained national coach-of-the-year honors from Chevrolet, Sports Illustrated, The Sporting News, ESPN, Eastern Basketball and the United States Basketball Writers Association. During the summer of 2001, Skinner served as assistant coach of the United States team that competed in the World University Games in Beijing, China. Skinner, 51, became head coach at Boston College after spending nine seasons as the Rams head coach ( ). He guided URI to three 20- win seasons and four postseason appearances. He earned Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year honors in when his team advanced to the quarterfinal round of the National Invitation Tournament and finished with a record. In his final year with the Rams, he led Rhode Island to a mark and an NCAA Tournament berth. A 1974 graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Skinner starred on the Minutemen s basketball team. A forward, he finished his collegiate career with 1,235 points, 749 rebounds and 320 assists. At the time of his graduation, Skinner ranked fifth on the school s career scoring list and second on its all-time assist chart. Today, his scoring total ranks 16th and his assist total ranks ninth. A team captain in , he has subsequently been elected to the University s Athletic Hall of Fame. Following his collegiate career, he played professional basketball for six years. A fifth-round draft pick of the American Basketball Association s New York Nets, he was named to the ABA s All-Rookie Team in and helped the Nets win the 1976 ABA championship. When the Nets joined the National Basketball Association in , Skinner was named team captain and Players Association representative. He began the season with New Jersey and finished the year with the Detroit Pistons. He returned to the Nets to start the season before moving on to the Philadelphia 76ers. He remained with the 76ers through the season. In , he moved to Barcelona, Spain to finish his playing career. There, he led his team, Joventut, to the European Championship. Skinner began his coaching career in 1982 as an assistant at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. After two seasons, he joined the Rhode Island staff as an assistant under Brendan Malone, former head coach of the NBA s Toronto Raptors and current assistant coach of the Indiana Pacers.

3 AL SKINNER Skinner spent two years on Malone s staff and a pair of highly-successful seasons in Kingston, R.I., as an assistant to Tom Penders. The Rams were in and earned an NIT bid, and the URI squad went 28-7 and advanced to the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament before losing to Duke, When Penders left Rhode Island to become the Texas Longhorns head coach in 1988, Skinner was a natural choice to succeed him. Following three rebuilding years, Skinner s first senior class posted a record and advanced to the third round of the NIT, scoring victories over Vanderbilt and Boston College along the way. The Rams went and earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament where they defeated Purdue before losing to eventual national champion North Carolina. After an showing in , the Rams were 7-20 in with a freshman-laden team. Skinner s team made it to the Atlantic 10 semifinals and then on to the NIT quarterfinals en route to a record. His Rams finished with a record, good for second in the Atlantic 10 and an NCAA Tournament berth. In his 15 years as a collegiate head coach, Skinner has a record. He left the University of Rhode Island as its third winningest coach, behind Frank Keaney (401 wins between ) and Ernie Calverley (139 from ). On Oct. 13, 2000, Skinner was inducted into the University of Rhode Island Athletic Hall of Fame. Al and his wife, Donna, reside in Wellesley with their two children, Vaniecia (12) and Andre (11).
