If you re only familiar with the 20-lb. tank that fuels your outdoor grill, then you might be surprised to learn that nearly 60 million Americans trust and rely on in innovative ways every day. Propane heats homes, water, and outdoor spaces. It cooks hot meals and provides a clean and comforting fireplace. On farms, controls pests and weeds, dries crops, and powers irrigation systems. In factories, warehouses, and communities throughout the U.S., fuels the forklifts, construction equipment, and fleets that drive our economy. All told, currently supplies about 4 percent of U.S. energy needs. But it has the potential to supply more. Fortunately, nearly 90 percent of U.S. supplies are produced at existing domestic facilities. Another seven percent comes from Canada, Who Uses Propane? Here s how U.S. consumers, farms, businesses, and communities consumed 18.8 billion gallons of in making a very secure energy resource. With the world s largest storage capacity, the U.S. is well positioned to compete for growing supplies of being produced with the expanding global trade of liquefied natural gas. Propane is a non-toxic, colorless, and odorless gas produced from natural gas processing and crude oil refining. Stored in sturdy tanks, is a compact liquid that is highly portable and can be used wherever clean-burning fuel is needed. Propane is a stable fuel that can be stored for long periods of time for emergency power generation. It emits fewer lifecycle greenhouse gases than gasoline or diesel fuel in engines, which has made one of the world s most widely used alternative fuels. Propane provides safe, clean, reliable, efficient and secure energy. That s good value for consumers, the environment, and America. 4.5% industrial 5% agricultural and other 45% chemical 42.5% residential, commercial, recreational 3% internal combustion engines
2 2 today s today s 3 The Environmentally Friendly Fuel. Since the 1930 s, has powered tour fleets at national parks from the mountains of Montana to the coasts of Maine. Did you know? Clean, efficient has long been recognized as an environmentally friendly energy. It s an approved alternative fuel listed in both the Clean Air Act of 1990 and the National Energy Policy Act of 1992 and Here are a few reasons why using can cut emissions and protect the environment: Propane-fueled vehicles produce significantly lower particulate, carbon about monoxide, nitrogen oxide, hydrocarbon, and greenhouse gas emissions than gasoline or diesel engines. Compared to gasoline, cuts emissions of toxins and carcinogens such as benzene and toluene by up to 96 percent. Per pound of fuel consumed, emits less than half as much carbon dioxide as coal and almost no sulfur dioxide. So consumers can help improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by using gas for heating, cooking, and other activities instead of coal-generated electricity. The Innovative Solution to America s Energy Needs. The industry is actively engaged in research and development initiatives to find new and innovative ways to utilize s full potential to help meet America s energy needs. The industry s technology initiatives range from improving basic appliances to demonstrating new -fueled components for new electric power systems, including hybrid systems to improve the efficiency of solar and wind power generation. The U.S. industry is also expanding collaboration, and organized the inaugural LP Gas Global Technology Conference in Attendees from more than 40 nations witnessed demonstrations of new clean, efficient technologies for home, business, agriculture, and engine fuel uses, as well as computer-based dispatching systems that promise to improve delivery efficiencies and benefit consumers. Working with private researchers, equipment manufacturers, and leading fuel system suppliers, the industry demonstrated -powered forklifts that will meet the strict emissions requirements of EPA and the California Air Resources Board for years to come. Propane fuels well over 600,000 forklifts every day. Collaborating with top agricultural research universities and leading farm equipment manufacturers, the industry is developing and demonstrating technology to enable a more organic harvest that uses produced heat, flame, and steam to replace chemical treatments. Propane is an essential part of America s energy future, and new and improved technology is essential to ensuring that consumers energy needs are met efficiently and with reduced impact on the environment...propane-powered vehicles offer the best combination of durability, performance, and driving range of commercially available alternative fuels...more than 200,000 bus, taxi and delivery vehicles, and other fleets across the U.S. use clean-burning.
3 4 today s today s 5 How Propane Gets to Where It s Needed. Today s Propane Distribution Network. The U.S. industry has created a vast and safe distribution network to get from the source to customer sites. U.S. Department of Transportation regulations and other codes and standards provide for the safe transport of on our highways, 90 barges and tankers railroads, and waterways. However reaches you, this wide-ranging distribution system means that even if you live far from 6,000 transports the natural gas main or power grid, you can be cooking with gas. 13,500 bulk/storage distribution points Propane occurs naturally during oil refining and natural gas U.S. Natural Gas Processing U.S. Petroleum Refineries processing, with these sources 36,500 fuel delivery trucks (bobtails) supplying about 40 and 50 percent of 22,000 railroad tank cars U.S. requirements, respectively. 70,000 miles of pipeline tanks and underground facilities 162,000 cylinder refillers (such as hardware stores, gas stations, campgrounds) or shipped by pipeline, rail, or truck to 56,000 employees Propane can be stored in large Canadian Imports about 50% 40% 4% 7% Other Imports thousands of secondary storage Primary Above Ground Storage facilities throughout the U.S. 3% Pipeline 7,000 12,000 gallons Primary Storage Transport and bobtail Transport 96% Primary Underground Storage tanks are built of thick, high-strength steel. Rail Propane is delivered from 13,500 retail storage facilities to nearly 60 million customers Residential Secondary Storage throughout the U.S. These bulk plants consist of Did you know? Propane is 270 times more compact as a liquid than as a gas, making it highly economical to one or more steel tanks, with typical capacities of 18,000 Commercial to 30,000 gallons each. Bobtails + Transports store and transport. Agriculture Engine Fuel for LPG Fleets Industrial
4 6 today s today s 7 A House Is a Home with Propane. A Safe Energy Choice. Propane pool and spa heaters warm the water more quickly, at less cost, than electric heaters. Propane patio heaters provide up to a 20-foot circle of radiant heat and raise the air temperature from 10 to 30 degrees. More than 55 percent of homeowners who cook outdoors use grills because they re faster and cleaner than the others. Propane cooktops give homeowners all of the benefits of gas cooking, including instant on and off heat and temperature control. Propane dryers are also on the list of energy efficient appliances working hard for American consumers. More energy efficient than electric about lamps, lamps won t go off during a power outage. Propane is a safe fuel to use in the home or business. That safety comes from a combination of its natural properties and the industry s ongoing education, training, preventive maintenance, and safety awareness programs. Safety is simply the industry s highest priority. Striving for Greater Safety. Stringent codes and regulations applicable to the industry have led to a remarkable safety record. Still, the industry is investing and working to improve safety. New cylinders, for example, include a device that shuts off the filling process when the tank reaches 80 percent of its liquid capacity. This additional safety feature ensures the cylinder is filled to the proper level. Beyond efforts to make equipment more safe, two programs developed by the National Propane Gas Association (NPGA) and the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) are helping to make sure that people know how to work safely with. The award-winning GAS Check tm (Gas Appliance System Check) program trains technicians on the safe handling of and preventive maintenance of appliances. The Certified Employee Training Program (CETP) assures that the industry s workers have the necessary knowledge and skills to perform their jobs safely and effectively. Together with professionals in the emergency response community, the industry developed the Propane Emergencies training program, adopted to-date by 27 official state firefighter training agencies. Propane Safety Tips..Because is odorless, an identifying rotten egg smell is added so the gas can be readily detected. The same thing is done with natural gas...if you detect a gas leak, immediately evacuate everyone from the building. and call the fire department from a. Tanks on vehicles are constructed safe location. Because is not harmful to soil or water, tanks can be buried underground to keep homes and landscaping looking their best. Millions of Americans count on furnaces to keep them warm and comfortable. Propane water heaters heat water twice as fast as electric ones making them energy efficient. Propane-powered generators provide reliable energy in locations natural gas mains and power grids don t reach, or standby power when the power goes out and it s needed most. from carbon steel and are 20 times more puncture resistant than typical gasoline or diesel tanks. Propane engine fuel systems are fitted with safety devices and shut-off valves that function automatically in case of fuel line rupture. Good Grilling Goes Global..Never use or tamper with a damaged cylinder. Always contact a. trained professional for service on your tank or cylinder. Propane mosquito eliminators protect up to an acre of land. Grilling with cuts carbon dioxide emissions in half compared to grilling with charcoal, says the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Reduce your personal greenhouse gas emissions grill with!
