Teaching Assistants (TAs): Our apologies but we will have No TA this semester Time: Lecture: 10:00 to 10:50 a.m., MWF at room AG 153 Labs: 8:00 to 9:50 a.m. (Section 1), 10:00 to 11:50 a.m. (Section 2) Thursday at AG 114. Attendance is mandatory in laboratories. Lab coats for labs in AG 114, and adequate barn clothes for labs at the farms are mandatory. Course Learning Objectives: The objective of this course is to allow the students to know and understand the following: general anatomy and histology of the male and female reproductive systems; endocrinology of the estrous cycle, pregnancy, and lactation; estrous cycle and gestation in farm animals; functions of the cells of the ovary and testis; basics of oocyte and spermatozoa maturation; transport of gametes through the male and female reproductive systems; steps involved in fertilization; basic events of embryo and fetal development; basics of maternal recognition of pregnancy, implantation, and placentation; events of parturition; events of courtship and mating in farm animals; general causes and examples of reproductive failure in farm animals; reproductive peculiarities and management of cattle, sheep, horses, swine, and poultry; basics of reproductive-assisted biotechnologies including AI, estrus synchronization, superovulation, embryo transfer, IVF, sperm and embryo sexing, transgenics, and reproductive immunization. Student Groups: This course will have 10 groups of 2 students in each one. Different group tasks will be performed including study guide answers-review session, and video-clip questions and discussion.

2 2 Study Guide - Review Session: Every lecture handout will have several questions to serve as a study guide for the students to prepare for the quizzes (in class and lab) and exams. Students are encouraged to study the answers of the questions posted online. Every Friday, a short review (first 15 minutes) of the week s lectures will be performed. After the short review, one or two short videos covering the previous material will be shown. Hours of Study Required for this Course: At least 4 hours per week. Grading: Questions regarding the Video-clips/discussion will be considered as a quiz. Additional pop-up quizzes should be expected in this course, mainly on Fridays. Exams: Exams will be given during the lecture period in room AG 153. Students may come early and remain later than the scheduled lecture period. Contact instructor for specifics. Exam formats may vary throughout the semester, but students should expect to see multiple choice, true/false, short answer and essay questions

3 3 (this can also be expected of the quizzes). Students should review their missed questions and return exam on the following class. Students will miss points if exams are NOT returned on time! Three mid-terms (Exam 1, Exam 2, Exam 3) and a Final Exam will be given in the course. Students will be waived from the Final Exam in case at least a grade B of a cumulative score was obtained until the Exam 3. Make-up exams will be essay or oral at the instructors' discretion. 20% will be taken off the top of any make-ups given to students who do not notify an instructor before the regularly scheduled exam. The Final may be 50% comprehensive. The final will only be given at the scheduled time - no make-ups or early exams. Students that do not take the final will be given "0" on the final or an incomplete depending on the circumstances determined by the instructor. Attendance: Attendance is important and will be considered mandatory in both lab and lecture periods and will be factored into the student s grade, accounting for 10%. Grading Breakdown: 10% Attendance A=90 to 100% 10% Participation B=80 to 89% 10% Quizzes 50% 3 Exams C=70 to 79% 20% Final Exam D=60 to 69% 100% Total F=<60% Changes to these grade items and points allocated are at the discretion of the instructor. If grades are applied to a curve the instructor reserve the right to lower the curve as appropriate. The curve will not be raised. Graduate students will not be included in the undergraduate student curve. Academic Honesty: The academic honesty policy will follow the Student Conduct Code. ADA Accommodation: In keeping the goal of the implementation of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), all students for whom the act applies should notify the instructor no later than the second session of the course so that arrangements can be made for accommodations to meet your educational needs and maximize learning.
