2 John Palliser ( ) was an Irish-born geographer and explorer. Following his service in the Waterford Militia and hunting excursions to the North American prairies, he led the British North American Exploring Expedition which investigated the geography, climate and ecology of Western Canada. In 1859 Palliser was awarded the Patron s Gold Medal of the Royal Geographical Society for his Survey of the Rocky Mountains. The Fairmont Palliser Hotel and the neighbourhood of Palliser in Calgary, Alberta, are named after him, as are the Palliser Range and Palliser Formation of the Canadian Rockies. The University of Calgary undergraduate Geography club is named the Palliser Club. VISIT #1: Mars Dairy, Stettler VISIT #2: Altappel Holsteins, Penhold VISIT #3: RockyMountain Holsteins, Cochrane

3 VISIT #1: Mars Dairy, Stettler Prefix: Marsfield Key Players: Gert & Sonja Schrijver; Established: 1996 with 50 head Employees: 3 full-time (herdsman, milking and feeding) & 1 part-time Acres farmed: 850 acres in barley & alfalfa along with 150 acres of pasture. # Head milking: Milk 260 with 370 kg of quota; milk 3x per day with a goal to produce 60,000 kg in 4 lactations with 3.8 fat with a 14 month calving interval Type of barn & parlour: 240 stalls in a 3 row barn with the feed alley on side; 2 x 12 parallel parlour with AFl; average milking time is 3 hours. Sand bedding is currently being used for cow comfort. Feeding protocols for the milking herd: Fresh and milking cows are fed one ration while close up and far off dry cows will get 50 hay/50 barley silage and minerals. Feed is stored in silage pits and delivered with a Supreme mixer wagon once a day. Calf, heifer & dry cow housing and feed: Cows close up 3 weeks before calving; Cows calve in maternity area; Fresh cows move to bedding pack; A transition barn was built in The bottom 50% of fresh 2yr-old cows are sold for dairy purpose; Calves are fed milk for 2 months, 4 litres per day, fresh water daily and calf starter; Calves & heifers are raised on hay until 4 months before calving, then barley silage is added to their feed. Sires Currently being used: Dempsey, Goldchip, High Octane along with a few more High genomic type sires. Management tools used: Heat detection with AFI (90% activity and 10% PG); start breeding around days after calving; Preg check with blood test; Vaccinate pregnant heifers before calving, cows at dry-off with cattlemaster. Marsfield does very little genomic testing Current herd classification: 8 EX 118 VG 123 GP Current BCA: 309M 310F 298P RHA: , kg F 434 kg P Key Cow families: Offspring from Gypsy Grand, Blackstar Raven, Shottle Bombi & Lyla Z. Interesting facts: Second year in top 10 for Master Breeder award, Alberta Breeder of the Year in 2009 and 2014.

4 VISIT #2: Altappel Holsteins, Penhold Prefix: Altappel Key Players: Dirk, Elizabeth and their son Arisjan Appel. Our daughters, Aukje and Margriet Appel were raised as farm girls. Along with Arisjan, they were very involved with 4-H. 4-H was a big family engagement for many years Employees: 2 full time Employees and 2 part time milkers Location: 10 minutes south of Red Deer Established: After farming for 12 years in Holland we started on this current farm in Main Cow Families: Rainyridge Lee Candice, Jeanlu Monday Gleam Acres farmed: 1100 acres; Alfalfa, Barley, Oats for silage. Peas and Barley for combining and processed for cow feed. Head milking: 250 purebred Holsteins Type & Brand of Barn: Parlour - Double 12 parallel GEA Rapid exit. Barn - Free stall deep bedded shavings. Housing: Baby calves - individual hutches. Everyone else is in loose housing barns. Feeding protocols: Feed own processed Barley and Peas as well as custom supplement from Nutrisource. Mixed twice a day with Barley, Oats and Alfalfa silage into TMR. Current Herd Classification: 11 multiple Excellent cows. 11 Excellent, 98 VG, 134 GP. BCA: Productions Awards: 8 cows with over 100 thousand kg lifetime production. Management Tools used: Keep our CQM current and up to date; Supervised DHI, Classification, 14 day herd health and work with Dairy Comp 305 Sires Currently Using: Doorman, Dempsey, Goldchip, Goldendreams, Bradnick, Atwood, Beemer, Superpower Bulls in AI: - Altappel Altaglow, Altappel Glendor # Genomic animal tested in a year: 10 Interesting Facts: Brand new young stock facility, renovation & extension of the older dairy barn to be able to milk 300 cows Goals: Working towards a labour efficient and progressive dairy.

Doug retired in 2013 with a Herd Dispersal and Glenn & David continued to rebuild the herd. Every 2 years RockyMountain hosts a major sale. Feeding protocols and housing for calves: Calves are housed in individual hutches and fed 21% protein calf starter while on milk and after weaning receive an 18% custom ration.
