Develp an understanding f glbal sciety: cultural diversity, mutual relatinships, interdependence f peples and natins; 5. Apply liberal learning in prblem-slving cntexts as preparatin fr active participatin in sciety;

Curse Objectives/Outcmes As a distributin curse within the Cre Curriculum, PSYC 395 was designed with the abve Cre gals in mind. Thus, upn successful cmpletin f Senir Thesis (PSYC 395), the student will be able t demnstrate their mastery f the fllwing bjectives and student learning utcmes: 1. T design and cmplete research prject. 2. T develp a familiarity with the prper APA (American Psychlgical Assciatin) style. 3. T develp an understanding f scial science research methds. 4. T becme familiar with the basic techniques f scial science research. 5. T develp, articulate and test hypthesis. 6. T identify and emply a research design strategy and recgnize and address threats t the design strategy. 7. T critically evaluate research articles fr a literature review and describe and implement the methdlgy t be emplyed in the thesis. 8. T apply descriptive and inferential statistical techniques t analyze the data. 9. T apply ethnical guidelines fr cnducting and evaluating research in scial science and recgnize and avid plagiarism. 10. T cmplete the thesis using the APA American Psychlgical Assciatin publicatin style. 11. T cmmunicate effectively in ral and written frm. V. TEACHING METHODS Lecture/discussin/cmputer lab based statistical inquiry. Individual cnsultatins with instructr and students. VI. COURSE REQUIREMENTS Attendance Plicy This curse is highly accelerated, and students will need t take a great deal f respnsibility fr their wn learning utcmes. Attendance is required in each class meeting fr the full perid f time. Any absence must be due t extrardinary circumstances and will require dcumentatin fr it t be cnsidered excused. Dcumentatin must be prvided immediately in rder t determine what, if any, accmmdatins are reasnable r pssible. Class attendance will directly impact yur final grade, and each undcumented absence will be cnsidered unexcused and will result in a 20% reductin in the final grade fr the curse. Due t the accelerated nature f the curse, shuld yu experience a medical cnditin which prevents yu frm attending any class(es), apprpriate medical dcumentatin must be prvided immediately s it may be determined what, if any, accmmdatins are reasnable r pssible. Reading Assignments It is expected that students will read and implement the writing frmats nted in bth the APA Manual and in the Writing with Style textbk. Each week students will be assigned research article t read and review. Written and Oral Assignments Thesis (100 pints) The student must cnduct a research prject and prduce a thesis by the end f the semester. Details are attached. The thesis will be based n the prpsal develped in the PSYC 395 Research Methds curse. The thesis must be submitted in class n the day it is due, r it will nt be accepted and the student will receive a failing grade fr the assignment. Only students wh submit a verified medical excuse can make arrangements t submit the thesis late. We will be using SafeAssign fr the assignment. Mre detail will be prvided in class.

3 Each student will submit a review f a research articles psted n D2L by the assigned due date. The utline f the review will be given t the students. Each student will cmplete chapters exercises and submit them by the assigned due date. Students are required t submit a rugh draft f their thesis fr review. Instructr will prvide feedback and recmmendatins. Students will pst their prgress weekly. Additinally, students are asked t intrduce themselves and their thesis tpic n the discussin bard. Students must submit their assignments and papers via the D2L Drp Bx Functin. Presentatin (20 pints) During the class sessin, students will present their thesis t the class. The presentatin shuld be abut 45 minutes in length. Students may ask their family members r friends t attend their presentatins. Each student will prvide a descriptin f the prject and the results f the study. Students will present infrmatin using pwer pint. If a student fails t d the presentatin at the scheduled time, an F will be given fr the assignment. Benedictine University at Springfield Student Academic Hnesty Plicy The search fr truth and the disseminatin f knwledge are the central missins f a university. Benedictine University at Springfield pursues these missins in an envirnment guided by ur Rman Cathlic traditin and ur Benedictine heritage. Student s Respnsibility Thugh there is n frmal hnr cde at Benedictine University at Springfield, students are expected t exhibit academic hnesty at all times. Vilatins against academic hnesty are always serius and may result in sanctins that culd have prfund lng-term effects. The final respnsibility fr understanding the Academic Hnesty Plicy f the institutin, as well as the specific plicies fr individual curses nrmally fund in syllabi, rests with students. If any dubt exists abut what cnstitutes academic dishnesty students have the respnsibility t talk t the faculty member. Students shuld expect the members f the class t be academically hnest. If students believe ne r mre members f the class have been deceitful t gain academic advantage in the class, students shuld feel cmfrtable t apprach the faculty member f the curse withut prejudice. 4 Grade Appeal Prcess If a student believes that an errr has been made in reprting a grade, an appeal must be made in writing t the instructr and must be initiated within 60 calendar days after the end f the term fr which the grade in questin was reprted. The appeal shuld cntain specific infrmatin abut why it is believed the grade reprted is inaccurate. See the Student Handbk fr details. Incmplete Request T qualify fr an I grade, a minimum f 75% f the curse wrk must be cmpleted with a "C" r better, and a student must submit a cmpleted Request fr an Incmplete frm t the Registrar s Office. 6 PSYC 395 Senir Thesis Due date 12/10/ pages in length, typed, duble-spaced - Use APA style - Frmat: Title Page (2 pints) Include title, authr, rganizatinal affiliatin, running head Abstract ne paragraph f less than 120 wrds (5 pints) State the prblem, the intent f the thesis, the methdlgy used, the findings, and the implicatins. Intrductin (15 pints) State the prblem and its imprtance, its backgrund, the research questin and the variables which will be cnsidered in the study. Literature Review (25 pints) Describe the general theries which are related t the prject, recent studies related t the tpic, and relevant methdlgical appraches frm related studies. Methdlgy (15 pints) Describe the research design; detail the qualitative r quantitative apprach, the data cllectin methds including sampling, surveying r bservatinal techniques, and the data analysis technique which will be emplyed.
