Urban Teacher Program UTP Orientation
About UTP: Purpose Metropolitan State was chosen by the MN state legislature in 2000 to start a collaborative urban teacher preparation program that would help meet the needs of urban schools for teachers who can improve students educational achievement. The legislation called for the program to enroll at least 50% students of color. Thus, the UTP s sole focus is to prepare diverse, prospective teachers who can build on the talents and resiliency of diverse urban learners for success in school and life.
Mission The Mission of the UTP is twofold: 1) To increase the number of well prepared teachers of color in Minneapolis, St. Paul and inner ring suburbs so that the urban teaching workforce reflects the ethnically diverse population of students and their communities; and 2) To empower urban teachers with the content knowledge, pedagogical skills, urban field experiences, and professional dispositions needed to improve the educational achievement of historically and currently underserved urban learners and to advocate for their right to receive a high quality education.
About UTP: Students Students in the UTP are diverse, reflective and resilient individuals who are outstanding in their commitment to effectively teaching urban youth and providing equal opportunity. Many are urban learners themselves, many already work in urban schools and communities, and many have rich life experiences. By attracting teachers of color and low income or first generation college students into teaching careers, the UTP provides urban schools with competent educators who can relate to the experiences of culturally and linguistically diverse youth and their communities.
What age or subject do you want to teach? UTP has Degree and Licensure Programs in: Early Childhood Education (birth grade 3) Elementary Education (prek grade 6) Secondary Education (grades 5 12) English Life Sciences/General Science Mathematics Social Studies
How many credits do you need to complete a bachelor degree? Secondary Education Licensure ECE & Elem Ed Licensure Your Content Area Major Department is in the College of Arts and Sciences Your Major Department (EDU) is in the College of Professional Studies
Program Admission Criteria Demonstrate commitment to teaching in an urban context. Demonstrate understanding of and respect for diverse urban learners and their communities. Complete at least 40 hours of experience working with youth in urban settings. Demonstrate professional conduct for positive interactions with students and educators in an urban environment. Complete coursework required for admission with a C or higher and have an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher.
What is Urban? UTP defines urban in Minnesota using combined geographic and demographic criteria. Geographically schools in Minneapolis, St. Paul and inner ring suburbs Demographically schools with at least 30% students of color 40% students qualifying for free/reduced lunch 10% of students whose home language is not English or otherwise identified as English Language Learners
Required Urban Field Experiences (from admission to completion) At least 40 hours in urban schools or other settings for admission to the UTP A minimum of hours in urban classrooms combined with upper level coursework Weeks of full time student teaching in an urban classroom after coursework is completed
Admission Requirements Complete at least 36 credits of semester study, including: University General Education course requirements for written & oral communication (Goal Area I). One approved Ethnic Studies (ETHS) course focusing on issues of race and racism experienced by various communities of color (4cr). At least 8 credits of courses required for the major that are not offered by the Education Department (e.g., Biology, Mathematics, Literature, History/Social Science, or Psychology). EDU 200 Introduction to Urban Education & Reflective Teaching (3cr) and EDU 203 Multicultural Education (3cr).
For UTP Admission, complete at least 36 total semester credits, including courses in these four key areas:
Admission Requirements (continued) Submit essay written in EDU 200 titled Why I will be an effective urban [insert subject area] teacher. Submit documentation of completing at least 40 hours of recent field experience with diverse youth in a qualified urban context (prior experience may count; most hours can be gained while completing EDU 200 & EDU 203). Request Two Recommendations (one from urban field experience and one from college instructor). Attend a UTP Mandatory Orientation for students newly admitted to the program.
Registration Guidance: What courses could I or should I take? Complete GELS/Mn Transfer Curriculum Goal Area 1 WRIT 131 and WRIT 231 or equivalents An Oral Communication Course (at least 3cr) 8 credits of courses required for their teaching major not in the EDU Department. Refer to the major checklist specific to your teaching specialty for possible courses. They can be found on the Major Checklist sheets under content area, core courses or subject area. ETHS xxx (see list of Ethnic Studies courses approved for UTP admission, 4cr) EDU 200 Introduction to Urban Education and Reflective Teaching (3cr) EDU 203 Multicultural Education (3cr) Other classes to complete GELS requirements
Registration Guidance Admission to UTP is not required for taking EDU 200, EDU 203, GELS courses or courses in psychology, ethnic studies, as well as courses required for the secondary education teaching majors (English, life sciences, mathematics, or social studies). In fact, you may even be enrolled in these courses when you apply for program admission. If you think you have taken equivalent courses at another college/university that are required for UTP Admission, check your DARS report and request a transfer transcript review from a UTP advisor before you register for classes. Register as early as possible because lower division courses ( level) and GELS classes fill up first.
Why Seek Admission to the UTP? Besides being a student in great program, UTP Admission is required to: Enroll in upper level ( ) EDU courses required for licensure. (The UTP is the only program that prepares future teachers at Metropolitan State.) Become eligible for UTP Scholarships
What do students say about UTP? The Urban Teacher Program has been meeting my needs by preparing me to become the best teacher I can be. I am learning a lot about Urban students and schools. The program has opened my eyes to a whole new way of thinking about teaching! The UTP has put me on the path I want to be on. It gave me experience I needed, and it has also provided me with a job opportunity...indirectly, but I wouldn't have gotten where I am without the UTP.
Program Admission: Application Dates to UTP Applications are reviewed throughout the year. The following deadlines are important only if you wish to and are ready to enroll in UTP Professional Education courses at the level. August 1 for Fall admission to UTP December 1 for Spring admission to UTP April 1 for Summer admission to UTP
What are my next steps? 1. Successfully complete the on line quiz for this on line orientation. 2. Complete a Program Declaration form for the teaching major that you want to complete. 3. Register for classes. 4. Complete a UTP Prospective Student Information form. 5. Contact a UTP advisor.
UTP: A Partnership of Different Colleges and Departments at Metropolitan State At Metropolitan State, the Education Department in the College of Professional Studies (CPS) teaches the education (EDU) courses for early childhood, elementary, and secondary education licensure. Early Childhood and Elementary majors are housed in CPS and one advisor in the UTP. Secondary subject areas (English, life sciences, mathematics, and social studies) are taught by faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS). Secondary students have a major advisor in CAS and a licensure advisor in the Education Dept. in CPS.
