The economic conditions in which we shipowners operate are forever shifting. Cargo markets rise and fall in response to all manner of external factors. Freight rates ebb and flow, as do trends in everything from fuel prices to the holiday preferences of passengers. Yet if we are forever prey to the unpredictable and the unexpected, the experienced shipowner also learns a thing or two over the years about how to survive and prosper under such conditions. It is about analysing your market carefully, backing your conclusions decisively, and having the confidence to stick with a chosen strategy even when the storm is raging. It is also about being flexible enough to respond swiftly to changing conditions. Finnlines involvement in the Russian market is the perfect illustration of how this approach can work in practice. As you will discover in this edition of Finnlines News, we have now been involved in Rus-

3 Russian engagement sia for 15 years, starting with the launch of the TransRussiaExpress service between Kiel and St. Petersburg. Today, the size and promise of the Russian economy might suggest that launching a dedicated Russia service is a fairly obvious move for a company in our region, but it was not always thus. Indeed, TRE ran into trouble early as the Russian economy hit the rocks and volumes shrivelled. Thankfully, we had the courage of our convictions and persevered, rebuilding our service to the market as the economy recovered, and then investing further in new routes and vessels. Today, TRE operates with the modern Hansa Class ro-paxes for a combined capacity of 6,400 lm and 250 passengers every week. But it is far from being the only service we operate into Russia. As part of the Grimaldi Group, we are able to offer our Russian clients not just routes around the ports of the Baltic Sea and North Europe, but access to a vast network of ser- vices to southern Europe and the Mediterranean, Africa and the Americas. Our Russian routings have expanded correspondingly. From St. Petersburg, Finnlines offers a weekly service to Zeebrugge, Bilbao, Antwerp, Hull and Immingham. We operate six ro-ro vessels into the Russian city twice a week from this area and the number of vessels exceed already 10 with a further growth potential through 2012 from other directions. In February, our sister company Atlantic Container Line also announced that it would be accessing St. Petersburg, running cargo from the US East Coast to Antwerp where it will connect with Finnlines service to St. Petersburg, Kotka and Helsinki. Last month, we also launched a brand new ro-ro service connecting Grimaldi s port in Wallhamn to UstLuga, 150 km south of St Petersburg. Such is our confidence in this new routing that we have deployed one of our brand new Chinese newbuilds on the service, with capacity for 3,200 lm of rolling cargo and 600 cars. Russia is also a market we believe will continue to grow fast as the local transport infrastructure improves. In Ust-Luga, good road and rail connections will allow us access to Moscow and far beyond. In St. Petersburg, the completion of the Bronka ro-ro and container terminal, scheduled for 2015, will take the pressure off the existing port facilities and allow for significant increases in volumes going forward. We at Finnlines continue to believe strongly in the Russian growth story. Our strategy is based on clear-eyed analysis and bold investment and we are not to be deterred when the storm rages. 4 Finnlines celebrates a 15-year Russian cooperation Photo: Marko Stampehl Even the mighty oak begins as a humble acorn, and the same can be said for Finnlines experience in the Russian market, where a commitment born 15 years ago and sustained through bad times as well as good has developed into one of the company¹s most healthy and promising businesses. 4 Future tonnage for Russia

5 It all began with the TransRussiaExpress or TRE service, which started life with small ships and high hopes and is now one of the company s most prominent, flagship operations. With dedication through hard times TRE s story began in February 1997, when Poseidon Schiffahrt out of Lübeck (now Finnlines Deutschland) and its Russian partner, St. Petersburg-based Baltic Transport Systems (today Trans-Log), began operating two quarter-ramp ro-ro vessels with a capacity of 950 lm apiece between Kiel and St. Petersburg via Sassnitz Mukran. The new service between Germany and St. Petersburg was soon serving a booming Russian market with five chartered ships and weekly capacity of 4,500 lm. It was not to last, however. Within 18 months of its launch, TRE was back to two small ro-ros as the Russian economic crisis hit demand and the service had to downsize to survive. Over the years that followed, however, the company s faith in the market never wavered and as economic conditions improved, we were soon investing again in larger tonnage. In 2001, MS Translubeca became the first ropax to enter the service, complemented by two more ro-ros as we looked to consolidate our market leadership on St. Petersburg. New ports, more capacity As volumes grew, our terminal needs changed. TRE moved from Kiel to Lübeck in 2003, and then from Lübeck s Nordlandkai to the privately owned Lehmannkai in search of more space and greater flexibility. In 2010, we added Ventspils to the service. This was partly to meet the needs of truck transport for Latvia but as the rail line to Moscow is upgraded, we will also be able to expand our access to the Russian capital and beyond. Capacity in the TRE service has risen steadily along the way. Today, the line is serviced by the modern Hansa-class ro-pax ships like MS Transeuropa, with a combined weekly capacity of 6,400 lm and 248 passengers. For Finnlines, which serves Zeebrugge, Bilbao, Antwerp, Hull and Immingham in a weekly service out of St. Petersburg, it is part of a burgeoning Russia business which sees six weekly calls into the city of Peter the Great, and more expected this year. So it was that in February, Atlantic Container Line (ACL) announced a new weekly ro-ro service from the US and Canada via Antwerp to Finland and Russia, with the cargo travelling on a single bill of lading. Under the new arrangement, ACL vessels calling New York, Baltimore, Norfolk and Halifax will connect with Finnlines vessels through Antwerp to access St. Petersburg, Kotka and Helsinki. And that is not all. In March, Finnlines launched a new ro-ro service connecting the Grimaldi-owned and -operated port the Russian port has the advantage of good road links as well as rail connections linking it to cities as far afield as Ekaterinburg and on to Siberia if need be years ago 5

6 of Wallhamn in Sweden with the Russian port of Ust-Luga, about 150km south of St Petersburg. In another measure of our belief in the Russian market, we have deployed one of our Chinese newbuilds in this fortnightly service. These are state-of-the-art giants of the sea, 187 metre-long, ice-class 1A ro-ros with capacity for 3,200 lm of rolling cargo and 600 cars, and a service speed of 21 knots. Specifically designed to optimise fuel consumption, they are also models of environmental sustainability. Wallhamn and Ust-Luga critical ports The two terminus ports will be critical to the success of this new service. Wallhamn, 55 km north of Gothenburg, is the only private port in Sweden. It has a 712 metre-long quay and 50 hectares of yard, and links directly to Grimaldi s Euro-Med service between North Europe and the Mediterranean. Third party operators serving Asian markets also connect with Wallhamn. In Russia, meanwhile, we are using the YUG-2 (or South-2) car terminal at Ust-Luga, which is equipped with two ro-ro berths for stern-ramp vessels along a 925 metre quay. It also has paved space for 12,200 cars as well as an on-site customs office on a total area of 50 hectares. Our St. Petersburg agent Trans-Log will also be handling our activities in Ust-Luga. Just as important as its physical assets, the Russian port has the advantage of good road links as well as rail connections linking Finnlines is helping to bring Russia to the world, and the world to Russia. it to cities as far afield as Ekaterinburg and on to Siberia if need be. 8 New vessels and a new terminal for Finnlines FOR a company like Finnlines, which is focussed on achieving steady growth while maintaining quality, the shipping year is invariably marked by a stream of launches and naming ceremonies, inaugurations and special announcements as new ships join the fleet to embark on new services along new routes. This year is no different. On January 30th, the latest ro-ro vessel to join the fleet was delivered at Yizheng shipyard in China, officially joining the Finnish register and hoisting the Finnish flag the following day. Like its sister ships MS Finnbreeze and MS Finnsea, which were delivered last year, MS Finnsky was deployed in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea after it arrived in Kotka via Singapore, Suez and Gibraltar in mid- March. A fourth sister vessel, MS Finnsun, has now followed MS Finnsky into the fleet. Delivered on February 7, the vessel left the yard for loading in Shanghai on February 15 and carried cargo for DjenDjen in Algeria via Singapore and Suez on her way to Finland. She is now employed carrying cars to Russia. Christening ceremonies for MS Finnsky and MS Finnsun The arrival of a new vessel is a special moment for any shipping company the arrival of twins is an even greater joy! and Finnlines will be celebrating the debuts of MS Finnsky and MS Finnsun this April at separate christening ceremonies at two of our key ports. Mrs. Barbara Engholm will act as godmother to MS Finnsun, which will be christened in Travemünde on April 14. Barbara is the wife of Björn Engholm, who was formerly prime minister of Schleswig Holstein and a candidate for chancellor of Germany and is now chairman of the port of Lübeck. Mrs. Saara Wahlroos, the wife of Nordea, Sampo and UPM chairman Björn Wahlroos, is set to christen MS Finnsky in a ceremony at the Antwerp Euroterminal on April 20. The celebrations will be particularly heartfelt for these vessels. They are latest of a group of six modern ships designed specifically for fuel efficiency and operational flexibility. They will replace expensive chartered tonnage and so give Finnlines not just a significant jump in quality but a financial boost as well. Maiden call to Copenhagen Malmö Port The same might be said of our new home at the Copenhagen Malmö Port (CMP), where we made our maiden call last May and attended a memorable opening ceremony over three days in September. The SEK 1 billion development of Northern Harbour is the largest port investment in Sweden for decades. Centred on a 25-hectare area that can be expanded to 150 hectares, it is equipped with two double ramps, two ro-ro berths and a new Autogate system. At the inauguration, CMP chief executive Johan Rostin described the Northern Harbour as a port for the future, of immense importance in supporting international goods traffic, new transport flows and Malmö s strategic location in the Baltic Sea region. Finnlines chief executive Uwe Bakosch concurred, adding that the company was delighted to be the first company to move to these new facilities and to have the possibility to further develop our services in the near future. Bakosch added that, cargo aside, the new terminal could prove fundamental for the development of the company s fast-growing passenger business between Malmö and Travemunde, reinforcing Malmö as a gateway between Sweden and the continent. 8
