3 1600 To further expand trade, the East India Company (VOC) and West India Company were established in the early 17 th century. Trade in spices such as nutmeg, cinnamon, pepper and other consumer products like tea, silk and porcelain brought great wealth to the merchants and traders of that era, forever remembered as the Golden Age. Over 400 years later, Amsterdam prides itself in having one of the largest and best preserved historical inner cities in Europe. Its maritime heritage still lingers on and is reflected in the monumental buildings the hotel consists of.

The street name Rusland is derived from the original land owner Willem Ruysch. Ruyschland evolved in the mid-16 th to t Ruslant and eventually into Rusland.

7 RESTAURANT Restaurant De Palmboom In Restaurant De Palmboom we use local and organic ingredients. This means we work with fresh daily goods and seasonal Dutch produce. This local character allows us to ensure the highest quality of all our dishes, from starters right down to desserts. In 2012, after a full refurbishment of Restaurant De Palmboom, Executive Chef, Johannes Nieuwenhuizen decided to also change the direction of our kitchen. Johannes chooses to only work with local and seasonal produce which is clearly reflected in his cuisine. Not surprisingly his signature dish, pan-fried fillet of turbot with a mousseline of forgotten vegetables, is one of the most sought after items on the menu.

8 BAR The Pastorie Bar The bar was initially connected to a clandestine church in which Catholics and other religious dissenters, unable to worship in public at the time, held services. The original church was demolished in Only the vicarage and part of the rear elevation survived and are still visible today.
