Fabric Storybook A soft-covered Fabric Storybook will make a great gift for little ones! Use your favorite fabrics, alphabets, and designs to "publish" your own pretty page-turner or action adventure. Personalize it with a child's name. Use alphabet designs to compose a story, or use a permanent fabric pen to create your tantalizing tale. These instructions can be used to create books for any number of themes. Choose any of your favorite designs... for a Christmas theme, choose Nativity designs or the Night Before Christmas blocks! The finished size for this project is 10 inches wide by 9 inches high. Supplies needed: ** 1 1/2 yard light-weight cotton fabrics (we used three colors of 1/2 yard each). This will make a book of 10 pages. ** Cut-away stabilizer ** Temporary spray adhesive ** Air-erase pen ** 1/4 inch eyelets ** Eyelet tool ** Craft knife ** Hammer ** Leather lacing file:///f /Source/ELProjects/html/pr1388.html (1 of 14)10/30/2007 9:22:23 AM

Designs we used: ** A Kooky Monster Design Pack - Small - Also available in Large ** Monster Ruckus Border (small) - Also available in large ** 1 inch Kids Alphabet (click here to see all available sizes of the Kids Alphabet) Creating the pages Draw a 9 1/2 inch wide x 8 1/2 inch high rectangle on the fabric. Mark a 1 inch allowance on the left side of the shape. This allowance will be used for adding the eyelets and creating the spine of the book. Note: You can make the pages any size you would like. Choose the size and then add the 1 inch allowance to the left side of the page. Using an air-erase pen, mark the center of the page by measuring the top, right side, bottom and the inside spine allowance and dividing by two. Draw lines connecting these marks. file:///f /Source/ELProjects/html/pr1388.html (2 of 14)10/30/2007 9:22:23 AM

Create a paper template of the design by printing it all full size using embroidery software. Cut off excess paper around the design for easy placement. Poke a hole in the center of the design and align it with the center of the page. Make sure the design fits well within the page. Leave at least 1 inch of fabric around the outer edges of the design. Hoop the fabric with cut-away stabilizer that has been sprayed with temporary adhesive. Hoop the fabric and stabilizer together by aligning the marks on the hoop with the lines on the fabric. file:///f /Source/ELProjects/html/pr1388.html (3 of 14)10/30/2007 9:22:23 AM

Attach the hoop to the machine and load the design. Align the needle over the center point on the fabric and embroider the design. Repeat the steps for the second page. However, for the second page, mark the spine allowance on the right side of the page shape. We add the seam allowance to the right side because the first page and second pages will be placed wrong sides together. Prepare the other pages as you did the first and second pages. The spine allowance for page three will be marked on the left side of the page, and the spine allowance for page four will be marked on the right side. file:///f /Source/ELProjects/html/pr1388.html (4 of 14)10/30/2007 9:22:23 AM

Repeat the design placement and embroidering process for all the pages you want to make. Once the designs have been embroidered, unhoop the fabric and cut out the page shapes. Carefully trim away the excess stabilizer. Generally we leave about a 1/2 inch around the design. file:///f /Source/ELProjects/html/pr1388.html (5 of 14)10/30/2007 9:22:23 AM

Assembling the pages Align the first and second pages with the right sides together, and the designs facing one another. Align the spine allowances together, and pin the layers together along the top, the side opposite to the spine allowance, and the bottom. Leave the spine allowance open for turning, and sew a 1/4 inch seam along the pinned edges only. file:///f /Source/ELProjects/html/pr1388.html (6 of 14)10/30/2007 9:22:23 AM

Turn the pages right side out and press the seams. Top stitch a 1/8 inch seam along the entire outer edge of the pages. Sew a seam along the inner edge of the spine allowance. Repeat the page, aligning and sewing process for all the pages. Creating the Cover We want the cover to be slightly larger than the pages for a couple of reasons: the cover should overlap the pages, and accommodate both the thickness of the book and the spine. Stack the pages and measure the thickness of the book. For example: ours measures 1/2 inch. Measure the dimensions of one of the completed pages (our completed page measures 9 inches wide by 7 3/4 inches high). Now, double the page width to cover the front and back (doubling our page width of 9 inches gives us 18 inches). Next, add 1 inch (for a 1/2 inch overlap), 2 inches (for spine allowance), and the page thickness (1/2 inch) to the width. (Our total is 21 1/2 inches.) Take the page height (ours is 7 3/4 inches) and add 2 1/4 inches. The final measurement for our cover fabric is 21 1/2 inches wide by 10 inches high. Using these calculations, draw a rectangle on the fabric. Mark the overlap, spine allowances, and page thickness as shown. file:///f /Source/ELProjects/html/pr1388.html (7 of 14)10/30/2007 9:22:23 AM

For the design on the cover, we used a border design and added the text "Little Monsters". That's the name of our "story," but you can use a child's name (Kenny's Book of Monsters) or make up your own title, too. If you're looking for tips or instructions for merging letter designs together to make words, see the Monogramming Techniques project. At the bottom of those instructions you'll find instructions for merging letters together. file:///f /Source/ELProjects/html/pr1388.html (8 of 14)10/30/2007 9:22:23 AM

Create a paper template of your cover design by printing it full size from your embroidery software. Measure the top, sides, and bottom of the right side of the shape (inside the spine allowance line and overlap lines) and divide by two. Mark the sides and draw lines connecting the marks. Poke a hole in the center of the template and align it with the center mark on the fabric. Make sure the design fits well within the shape and does not extend out past the spine allowance or the overlap. Hoop the fabric with cut-away stabilizer that has been sprayed with temporary adhesive. Hoop the fabric and stabilizer together by aligning the marks on the hoop with the lines on the fabric. Attach the hoop to the machine, load the design, align the needle over the center point of the fabric, and embroider the design. When the design has been embroidered, carefully trim away the excess stabilizer. Also, cut out the rectangle along the outer line. Assembling the Cover Lay the embroidered front fabric on top of the inner fabric, trace the shape, and cut out the shape. Also, lay the front fabric on top of the batting and trace out the shape. Place the batting down first and align the front fabric on top of the batting, right side up. Lay the inner fabric on top of the front fabric with the right side down. Pin the layers together and sew a 1/2 inch seam around file:///f /Source/ELProjects/html/pr1388.html (9 of 14)10/30/2007 9:22:23 AM

the top, right side, and the bottom edges, leaving the side open for turning. Turn the cover right side out between the inner fabric and the front fabric. Press the seams. Sew a seam down each inner edge of the spine allowance. Turn the open end of the cover in 1/2 inch, and sew a seam right along the edge to close the opening. Adding eyelets to the pages Mark 1/2 inch from the top and bottom of the seam allowance on the first page. Measure and mark halfway between these marks. Then, measure and mark halfway between these marks. Measure and mark half- way between the outer marks and the center mark (a total of five marks). file:///f /Source/ELProjects/html/pr1388.html (10 of 14)10/30/2007 9:22:23 AM

Using a craft knife, cut small a small "x" at each mark. Add the eyelets with a hammer and eyelet tool. Use the first page as a template for adding eyelets to all the pages. To add the eyelets to the cover, center a page with the spine allowance on the front and back cover and make a mark in the center of each eyelet. This will ensure that all the pages will line up properly with the cover. file:///f /Source/ELProjects/html/pr1388.html (11 of 14)10/30/2007 9:22:23 AM

Make cuts on each mark, and add the eyelets to the front and back cover. We are using two strands of different colored leather lace to create the bookbinding. You can use one strand if you like. First tie a knot in one end of the lace. Then thread the lace into the top eyelet on the back cover. starting from the outside. Bring the lace through the top eyelets of the stacked pages. file:///f /Source/ELProjects/html/pr1388.html (12 of 14)10/30/2007 9:22:23 AM

Thread the lace through the top eyelet of the front cover from the inside out. We twisted the lace for an added effect. Then, continue threading the lace down the spine, working from the outside in on the back cover, through the pages, and inside out through the front cover. Thread the end of the lace through the last eyelet on the back cover, make a knot inside the book, and trim the lace. file:///f /Source/ELProjects/html/pr1388.html (13 of 14)10/30/2007 9:22:23 AM
