1 Bishop Eustace Preparatory School Summer Immersion Course 2015 Math and English July ,, 2015 Session 1: 8:30 10:10 Session 2: 10:20-12:00 Get ahead of the game and spend four weeks preparing for the academic transition into high school.

2 Instructors: Mr. James Brady (BA English LaSalle, MA English Villanova) English Department Chairperson. Mr. Brady has been a member of the Bishop Eustace English Department since 1983 and has taught the English portion of the Bishop Eustace Summer Reinforcement Program for the last 11 years. Mr. Brady is a member of the National Council of Teachers of English and a judge for both the New Jersey Teachers of English writing contests, as well as the National Teachers of English writing contests. Mrs. Alice Penza (BS Montclair State, M Ed. Wilmington College) Dean of Students Mrs. Penza has been the Dean of Students since She has also taught in the math and science departments. Prior to coming to Bishop Eustace, Mrs. Penza taught 7 th and 8 th grade Math and Science for 10 years, including Pre-Algebra and Algebra I. Over the past 11 years, Mrs. Penza has taught the math portion of the Bishop Eustace Summer Reinforcement Program. Thank you for accommodating my daughter s schedule outside of class and for having this program. She enjoyed her classes and learned a lot from them. I also enjoyed the comments and recommendations on her essays. These comments are very helpful in her progress. Enrolling my son in the Summer Immersion Program was definitely worth it. Thanks to your instruction, he will be much better prepared for classes at Bishop Eustace this fall. We ll let him know that you are available for help this coming school year. Student Responses 2014 The summer program helped me a lot. In my middle school, we did not have much homework and did not move as fast as high school. The Summer Immersion Program got me to understand what to expect at Eustace in September. The Program helped with the transition into September by allowing the students to learn how to study before school begins in September and it counts. It also allowed one-on-one time with the teachers. The Summer Immersion Program showed almost exactly what types of teaching styles and the pace of learning that occurred when we began Eustace in September.

3 Summer Immersion at Eustace English Objectives: To prepare for the academic rigors of high school, as well as the transition from middle school to Bishop Eustace Preparatory School. The course includes homework, readings, testing, writing, study skills and time management instruction. Introduction of basic grammar (parts of speech, sentence structure, editing clues) Writing narrative, descriptive and expository writing Literature short stories, poetry, novel Vocabulary 3 units o Words in context (examining clues) o Definitions o Synonyms/antonyms o Study hints Reading o Finding the Main Idea o Defining Vocabulary o Distinguishing Between Fact and Fiction o The Parts of a Plot o Chronological order/order of importance o Similarities and differences o Cause and Effect o Summaries and Outlines o Overview of Reading Strategies Part 1 o Point of View o Literary Devices o Finding an Implied Idea Outside Reading for September o Complete questions from the assignment Study Skills focus is on time management and organization

4 Math Objectives: To introduce students to the high school Algebra I curriculum. The course reinforces the student s fundamental strengths and identify areas where reinforcement is necessary. The course includes proper note taking, homework, testing, study skills, and time management instruction. Introduction to basic fundamentals of Algebra I (mathematical operations, properties of numbers, operations of integers) Solving Equations (solving one step, two step and multi-step equations) Solving Inequalities Graphing both linear equations and inequalities (graphing horizontal and vertical lines, slope, finding the equation of a line, using Slope- Intercept Method) Solving Systems of Equations using Addition or Subtraction, Substitution and Graphing All operations of exponents Working with Roots and Radicals (including negative radicands and radical expressions) Solving Quadratic Equations
