1 European Weed Research Society 2nd CIRCULAR 10 TH WORKSHOP OF THE EWRS WORKING GROUP: PHYSICAL AND CULTURAL WEED CONTROL Alnarp, Sweden March 2014 Dear Colleague, In this second circular we are pleased to give you information on the 10 th workshop of our working group. Please forward this circular to any interested colleagues in your institution/country. Information on the workshop will also appear on the working group s web site: The aim of the workshop is to create a forum where people involved in research in physical and cultural weed control can come together and exchange results, experiences, information, and establish new contacts and networks. 2 Venue The Workshop will take place at Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SUAS), campus at Alnarp, about 10 km north of Malmö (southern Sweden). The campus area is situated in a park surrounded by arable fields, but in a densely populated area. Education and research has been carried out at Alnarp for about 150 years. SUAS offers education in landscape architecture, horticulture and agriculture at BSc to MSc levels. Accommodations and meals The participant will arrange accommodation on their own in the city of Malmö. There are several accommodations in the city with prices from about 45 Euro per night to 200 Euro per night (breakfast included). This is a hostel in an international tourist organization. Good, clean and quite new. Costs for participation Participation in the workshop is 2900 SEK (approx 300 ). Non-EWRS members will be charged an extra fee of 60. The registration fee will cover: Welcome drink and light meal on Sunday evening, lunches and coffee during the workshop, dinners on Monday and Tuesday, transport from your hotel to the venue, meeting s booklet, and the excursion on Tuesday. Payment will be made to JTI. Instruction is included in this circular. Practical details Transport We recommend that you fly to Copenhagen airport in Denmark. At Copenhagen airport there is a train connection to Malmö. Train runs often, 2-3 trains per hour and it takes about 30 minutes from the airport to Malmö Central Station. Note that there are stations before the Central Station that also are in the city of Malmö, but these are quite far away from the city centre. On arrival in Malmö, the local organisers will meet you and (if required) help you to your hotel. We recommend that you arrive no later than Sunday March 16 th. Weather and clothes In mid of March, the spring has started, but it can still be cold and rainy with temperatures around 5-10 C and sometimes even colder. Bring warm boots for outdoor use (excursion on Tuesday March 18 th ) and warm clothes. Currency, visa, electricity All major credit cards are accepted in Sweden. Avoid the Electron card, that could be difficult, but Visa and Master Card are easy to use. We have 230 V electricity. Payment is in Swedish krona (SEK). You cannot use EURO banknotes to pay in shops etc. Residents in countries outside the EU may need to apply for a visa to enter EU and Sweden. Remember that the airport is in Denmark and the workshop is in Sweden. Please contact your local authorities/embassies and check if you need a visa. We will send letter of invitation to you if needed, please inform us about this as soon as possible. On March 19 th 2014, participants will obtain a document certifying that they have attended the workshop. 3

4 Accompanying person You may want to bring an accompanying person who will not participate in the scientific program. City of Malmö is linked to Copenhagen in Denmark by a railway/car bridge that makes it easy to tourist in both cities. Please indicate by contact to local organisers if you intend to invite an accompanying person. 7 Abstracts, posters and proceedings A booklet with one-page abstracts of all scientific contributions will be available at the workshop. The abstracts and optional full papers of all scientific contributions, both oral and poster papers, will appear in the Proceedings, which will be published on the working group s web site after the workshop. There are still possibilities to present a poster at the workshop. Please contact the local organisers in January 2014 if you or a colleague would like to contribute with a poster. Each tours is planned to be a full day. Please indicate your interest in either of the tour be replying to Fredrik.Fogelberg@jti.se no later than February 1 st. The number of participants decides the tour fee. We will come back to you in the period February 1 st -Februari 15 th with additional information. 1) Tour to seeding Väderstad AB (seeding machines, cultivators et cetera) and Gothia Redskap AB (seeding machine with possibility to perform inter-row cultivation). Tour number 1) will require train to city of Linköping in south-central Sweden. We will organise a minibus to the machine companies and in the evening return to Malmö by train. From Linköping, it is easy to take a train to Stockholm and spend some days there as tourist. 2) Farms and machine companies in the province of Skåne (the province where the workshop is located. Tour number 2 will include visits to 1-2 farms and 1-2 machine companies or other companies working with food production, vegetables or animal breeding/production. The tour will be organised with minibus and we will return to Malmö in the evening. 10
