The enclosure is designated as PCE-600ALU and will be referred as such throughout this manual. 2 Admonishments Important safety admonishments are used throughout this manual to warn of possible hazards to persons or equipment. An admonishment identifies a possible hazard and then explains what may happen if the hazard is not avoided. The admonishments in the form of Dangers, Warnings, and Cautions must be followed at all times. These warnings are flagged by use of the triangular alert icon (seen below), and are listed in descending order of severity of injury or damage and likelihood of occurrence. Danger: Danger is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that will cause severe personal injury, death, or substantial property damage if the hazard is not avoided. Warning: Warning is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that can cause severe personal injury, death, or substantial property damage if the hazard is not avoided. Caution: Caution is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that will or can cause minor personal injury or property damage if the hazard is not avoided. 1 GENERAL The PCE-600ALU is a pole mounted enclosure designed to store double jacketed Outside Plant (OSP) fiber optic cable and if desired can accommodate a splice case. The PCE- 600ALU can store at least 150 feet (45.7 m) of fiber optic cable; 75 feet (22.7 m) from each direction. The PCE-600ALU is attached to a pole mounting bracket that must be attached to the pole first. Splice case brackets retain various Industry Standard splice cases. These brackets accommodate splice case sizes and shapes that vary from 6.0 to 8.0 inches (15.2 to 20.3 cm) in diameter and up to 27.0 inches (68.9 cm) in length. Equivalent sized rectangular splice cases may also be installed in the PCE-600ALU. The PCE-600ALU has two cable entry points, one at the top left and one at the bottom right corner areas of the enclosure. Each entry can accommodate up to two fiber optic cables. Page 2

3 2 DESCRIPTION The enclosure consists of a cabinet that contains apparatus to support cable storage, cable entry, and splice cases. The PCE-600ALU cabinet, as shown in Figure 1, is made of heavy gauge aluminum. It is 30.0 inches wide, 36.0 inches high, 10.0 inches deep ( cm) and weighs approximately 25 pounds (11.3 kg). The enclosure door has a full length stainless steel hinge, quarter turn fasteners, and a padlock hasp. The cable support apparatus consists of cable separation brackets and cable retaining brackets. See Figure 2 detail A. The cable entry brackets are two piece slotted brackets. They are designed to be removable for cable installation. Refer to Figure 2 detail B A Figure 1. PCE-600ALU Page 3

5 3 INSTALLATION Before starting the installation procedure, separate the mounting brackets that are attached to outside of the enclosure for shipping. Open the enclosure and remove the hardware kit. The hardware kit contains the enclosure mounting parts listed in Table 1. Table 1. Enclosure Mounting Parts ITEM SIZE QUANTITY Stainless steel bolts in. (0.95 cm) 0.5 in. (6.1m) 3.1 Pole Mount Bracket Installation The Pole Mount Bracket must be attached to the pole prior to mounting the PCE-600ALU on the bracket. See Figure 3. The location the pole and choice of fasteners is governed by local practice. Determine the location on the pole for the enclosure. 6 3.2 Enclosure Mounting When the mounting bracket is securely attached to the pole, mount the PCE-600ALU to the bracket using the following procedure: 1. Lift the enclosure and hook the top hangers over the top bar of the mounting bracket. 2. Align the bottom Pemnut inserts with the mounting holes in the bottom bar of the mounting bracket. 3. Insert a inch (0.95 cm) 2 inch (5.1 cm) stainless steel bolt with washer through each mounting hole in the bottom mounting bar, into the Pemnuts. Tighten each bolt. Danger: Do not look into the ends of any optic fiber. Do not assume the laser power is turned off or the fiber is disconnected at the other end. Infrared radiation is invisible and can seriously damage the retina of the eye. 3.3 Cable Installation If the enclosure is to be used for splicing, and a splice case is to be stored in the cabinet, route the cables counter clockwise around the support brackets. Follow the manufacturer s recommendations for the splice case installation, cable bonding, and splicing operation. The cable supporting apparatus consists of cable support bracket with a cable separation bracket and a cable retaining bracket. Install and route the OSP cable using the following procedure: 1. If the door is not open, use an appropriate tool (screwdriver or 216B tool) and turn the fasteners one quarter turn and open the door. Tighten the wing nut on the door prop to keep the door open. 2. Determine which cable entry bracket will be used. Loosen the wing nuts securing it and remove the bracket. Refer to Figure 2 detail B. 3. If the inner duct is used, place the cable entry brackets around the inner duct(s), slide into position under the wing nuts, and tighten the wing nuts. Refer to Figure 2 detail B. 4. Loosen the bolts securing the ca ble support brackets. Rotate the cable separation and retaining brackets in towards the center of the enclosure so that they do not interfere with routing of the cable. 5. Route the fiber optic cables (through the inner duct if used) counter clockwise around the cable support brackets. The enclosure accommodates up to 75 feet (22.9m) of fiber optic cable from each direction. 6. Position the cable separator bracket against the cable. 7. If more than one cable is to be installed, route the other cable counter clockwise around the cable support brackets outside of the cable separator bracket. Refer to Figure 2 detail A. 8. Position the cable retaining bracket against the outer cable. Ensure the cable separator bracket and cable retaining bracket are in proper position and tighten the securing bolts. 9. Place the cable entry brackets around the cable(s), slide into position under the wing nuts, and tighten the wing nuts. If inner duct is used this operation was done in Step Seal the cable entry bracket openings according to local practice. 11. Loosen the wing nut on the door prop and partially close the door. Using a screw driver, make sure the fasteners are turned counter-clockwise. Close the door and hold tight while turning the fasteners one quarter turn clockwise to secure the door. Page 6
