One NVS and 3 deputies Schedule 1 users (only) - 40 CBS staff - 66 members of staff

7 Combined NVS and NTCO roles Advantages Can identify learning needs during routine vet visits Raise training concerns if complications are noted Knowledge of PILs/PPLs/CBS staff/ external network Experienced HO Modular course contributor Trainer network established Very experienced in techniques Advise on 3Rs during training e.g anaesthesia & surgery Disadvantages Not a trainer or teacher by definition Time commitments involved New processes to be developed and implemented
8 Combined NVS and HOLC roles Advantages Extensive knowledge of ASPA Prior experience of AWERBs Production of standard wording for procedures and adverse events Good network of PILs/ PPLs and Named Persons Interaction & relationship with HO Better interaction with lay people Assistance with NTS Set agendas for AWERB meetings and contact speakers Local Policy Development Disadvantages Admin heavy ++++ Time consuming ++++ Conflict of interest? Cannot contribute as NVS to AWERB Signing off PPLs on behalf of PELH additional responsibility Acting as a mediator in the AWERB process can be both positive and negative Best use of Veterinary degree and experience?
9 Combined NVS and NIO roles Advantages Effective dissemination of information appears to fit well with role of NVS Target groups or individuals Ability to join NIO network and contribute and share ideas Assists with promulgation of the 3Rs Not paperwork based or heavy on admin. Disadvantages Need to be more IT savvy Ensuring people read and act on information supplied Better sharing of resources throughout UK but also within EU (Training platforms?) Should dedicate more active time doing this role rather than seeing it as part of NVS duties.
10 Multi tasking Named Persons roles Predicted time spent on roles was: NVS 33% / NTCO 33%/ HOLC 25% / NIO 9% Reality NVS 20% / NTCO 39%/ HOLC 40% / NIO 1% Burn out!
11 Current situation at Imperial College London 1 HOLC (100%) appointed July NTCO (100%) appointed October 2014 Further NIOs appointed by Establishment PEL now 2 per site, NVS and CBS site manger total has increased from 1 to 4. The NVS still has an active role in training but responsibilities and workload now readdressed. NVS % / Training 40 30%/ NIO 10-20%
12 Discussion What to do when recruitment processes fail? Very specialised area Locum or consultant availability? Resources and support (both informational, training, financial and health wise) Pressures appear to fall to the Named Persons to take on additional responsibilities. How can this be addressed?
