3 Reading Comprehension Read the text carefully and say if the statements are TRUE, FALSE or NOT IN TEXT 1. A-level results texted to pupils Some pupils at The Willink School received their most recent results from January exams via SMS. The school was one of just seven nationwide to take part in the scheme. Overall only 100 pupils took part. Ann Munday, examinations officer, said: We were pleased when we were invited to take part in the scheme. There were about 30 pupils who could have taken part and about 22 did with their parents permission. This was run as a trial. Initially I had slight reservations. One was we didn t want the text to go out too early. If there were any disappointments among the students, we wanted to have the school s staff on hand to help. The other issue was that the text was only going to indicate the grade for example A, B or C not the mark. Susan Plumb, head of Sixth Form at the school, added: I think the students certainly like it because they are used to text message. But they still need to talk to staff to make sure they have support available. Colin Banks, operations director for the programme, said: This new service is designed to offer schools and students an additional option for how they would like to receive their exam results. Text messaging is the natural way of providing this flexibility. By asking teachers to highlight which students would benefit from this service (like pupils on holiday when results come out), we are making sure the technology is only used where appropriate. 1. Pupils are not texted their marks T F NT 2. Eight school took part in the scheme T F NT 3. Ms. Munday has always been very enthusiastic about the project T F NT 4. At least 22 schools will take part in the scheme next year T F NT 5. SMSs eliminate the need to talk to staff T F NT
4 2. Read the text carefully and choose the best word to go in each space. 1. under, on, about, in 2. being, to be, be, become 3. which, of which, who, when year-old, 36 years old, 36 years, 36 old 5. Britain, British, Briton, England 6. Although, Because, For, But 7. insure, sure, assure, secure 8. enjoy, enjoyed, enjoying, enjoyable 9. wan, win, won, wined 10. information, informations, of infos, of information Champion opens new swim school Olympic swimmer Karen Pickering has just launched her own swim school 1) in Reading. The new Karen Pickering SWIM club has been set up at the Spirit Health Club at the Holiday Inn in Basingstoke Road and will teach children the joys of 2) being in the water. The former world swimming champion, 3) who won more than 35 medals in a glittering 20-year career, has now retired from competition and is encouraging the next generation of youngsters to take part in the sport she loves. The 4) 36-year-old, who officially opened the new school on Thursday, March 6, said: I am always amazed and frustrated by the number of children and adults I meet that can t swim. So if I can nurture people to love the sport as I do and be confident in the water, then we may see more 5) British swimmers competing in the future. 6) Although I won t be teaching them myself, as I have swim schools across the country, I hand-pick the teachers to make sure they teach the way I would want them to. I will also regularly visit the schools to see the children and make 7) sure they re having fun as well as learning to swim. It s an 8) enjoyable thing to do as well as being a life skill which is so important for all our children. From 1986 to 2005, Ms Pickering 9) won 38 National Championship titles and was awarded an MBE for services to swimming in For more 10) information on the Karen Pickering SWIM club call the Holiday Inn Reading South on or visit Total time for reading: 30 minutes Speaking The speaking test assesses your ability to interact in conversational English in a range of contexts (included in the Personal / Public / Educational domains of the Common European Framework) for about 10 minutes. Ex: _ describe what you can see in the picture _ say what the people are doing _ say what you think about the picture (I like/don t like; why) _ say what you deduce or suppose about the picture ( I think they ve just started because... 5 VALUTAZIONE I PUNTI TOTALI OTTENIBILI SONO 60 (15 per abilità). La sufficienza è di 36 (60%). CHIAVI Listening Comprehension PART A 1. School-gate fast food ban urged Schools and councils are asked to make it harder for children to swap their school meal for a takeaway. Rising levels of obesity are caused by the ready availability of fast food, said the School Food Trust, which wants schools to close their gates at lunchtime and councils to stop new fast food outlets opening nearby. Judy Hargadon, from School Food Trust, says: At the moment school canteens have to compete with a myriad of take-aways, chippies, and sweet shops for pupils' dinner money. But the Local Government Association said it could not force schools to shut their gates and that food retailers could have problems. 1. Obesity is now decreasing F 2. At present school canteens don t have to compete with other shops F 3. According to the School Food Trust, schools should not allow pupils to go out at lunchtime T 2. Judge orders to learn English A judge in the US state of Pennsylvania has ordered three Spanish-speaking men to learn English or go to jail. The trio were told they could remain on parole if they studied English and got full-time jobs. The Judge said the unusual sentence was supposed to help the men. They will serve their full jail terms if they fail an English test in a year. The men, ranging in age from 17 to 22, all needed translators and the judge sentenced the three defendants to jail terms of between four and 24 months but said they could be released on immediate parole provided they met his conditions. The men have been ordered to return with their parole officers in 12 months' time to be tested on their reading and writing skills. "If they don't pass, they're going in for the 24 months," Judge Olszewski said. 1. The oldest man was seventeen F 2. They will take the exam in one year T 3. If they fail, they ll go to prison for 2 years T 3. Turner paintings head for Moscow An exhibition of the works of JMW Turner is to go ahead at the Pushkin Museum in Moscow later this year. Tate Britain is lending over 100 of the artist's works for the show which will run from November until February. The Pushkin exhibition will feature over 100 of Turner's works. It marks the first time any of Turner's paintings have been seen in Moscow since the 1970s. "The generations have changed since Turner was last in Moscow and it's important that the young see him," said Ainaida Bonami, the Pushkin's deputy director. The paintings on loan will include Norham Castle, Sunrise, one of Turner's most popular works, and a selfportrait. 1. Moscow will host paintings coming from the British Museum F 2. The exhibition will open in November T 3. The exhibition will include almost 100 paintings F
