1 NEW YORK CITY COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY DIVISION OF LIBERAL ARTS DEPARTMENT OF THE HUMANITIES COURSE: FREN1101, ELEMENTARY FRENCH I 3 hours, 3 credits COURSE DESCRIPTION: A course for beginning students of French. Includes basic grammar, pronunciation, and development of a basic vocabulary. Provides practice in spoken as well as written language. OBJECTIVES: Development of basic skills in understanding, speaking, reading and writing of elementary French. Students will be able to read and understand simple texts and to engage in conversations with their classmates and instructor. ASSESSMENT: Students will be evaluated on a daily basis. Homework assignments and class participation will be some of the various instruments measuring the student s learning. In conjunction with examinations, which will assess in longer intervals the progress of students, oral and written quizzes/tests, given on a regular basis and focused on specific skills, will provide, at every step of the process, an accurate index of the individual student s knowledge. Salutations and pronunciation are taught, with many examples. Liaisons. WEEK 2 WEEK 3 WEEK 4 Work order Gender of French nouns Definite and indefinite articles. Personal subject pronouns First regular conjugation (-er verbs) Memorization of several dozen regular -er verbs Asking questions, with est-ce que Making a sentence negative Recap WEEK 5 Asking questions by means of inversion Plural of indefinite articles. Important common phrases and idioms. WEEK 6 WEEK 7 WEEK 8 Plural of nouns The verb etre Possession and relationship with de Masc. adjectives Fem. adjectives Position of adjectives The Verb avoir

A test/quiz will be given at end of week 3 A test/quiz will be given at end of week 5 An exam will be given at end of week 8 A test/quiz will be given at end of week 11 A test/quiz will be given at end of week 13 FR 101 OBJECTIVES At the end of week indicated students will show that they can: WEEK 1 Recite the French alphabet accurately, and state when liaisons are obligatory, optional or forbidden. Exchange salutations and pleasantries correctly. WEEK 2 Know the word order in French. Define the concept of gender and how it applies to French nouns. Name the three definite articles. WEEK 3 Know the personal subject pronouns.

4 Know the present indicative of the first regular conjunction. List several common -er verbs. WEEK 4 Ask questions by means of est-ce que. Respond to questions thus asked by the instructor or by a classmate. Turn a positive statement into a negative one. Turn a positive statement into a negative one. WEEK 5 Ask questions by means of the inversion. Show familiarity with the plural of the indefinite articles. WEEK 6 Know how to form the plural of nouns, regular and irregualr. Demonstrate knowledge of the present indicative of etre. Construct simple sentences utilizing -er verbs, nouns both in the singular and the plural, and the verb etre. WEEK 7 Show ability to accompany nouns with suitable adjectives, in the singular and in the plural. Be aware of the flexibility of adjectives with regard to their position vis-a vis nouns. WEEK 8 Demonstrate knowledge of the present indicative of the verb avoir. Use avoir in full, albeit short, sentences. Draw parallels between avoir and to have and to be. WEEK 9 Count from 0 to 100 WEEK 10 WEEK 11 Use voici or voila correctly. Distinguish between voici/voila and il y a. From sentences which demonstrate that the difference has been understood. From sentences with aller one for each person. Use possessive adjectives in full sentences. WEEK 12 Explain what the partitive is, and give its approximate English equivalent. Give correct examples of the use of the partitive, both in positive and in negative contexts.

The students will be graded according to their performance and gradual progress as demonstrated in oral/written tests and midterm and final examinations (70%), their proper completion of the Workbook / Lab Manual(10%), and their attendance and class participation (20%). College Attendance Policy. Attendance is mandatory. No more than three absences will be allowed during the regular semester. The student with more than three unexcused absences can receive a lowered or even a failing grade. Three latenesses will be considered as one absence. Academic Integrity Policy Statement.
