2 Section 1 Why do we have bowel screening tests?

3 What is the bowel? Your bowel is inside you It looks like a long tube The food you eat goes through your bowel and comes out of your bottom as poo

4 Who has bowel tests? All men and women between the ages of 50 and 74 will get a bowel test The invitations are sent out every 2 years

5 What does the test look for? The bowel test looks for small amounts of blood in your poo that you cannot see

6 What does the test look for? Small amounts of blood in your poo MIGHT mean there is a bowel cancer You will need to have it checked out

7 What is bowel cancer? Sometimes the cells in your bowel grow too quickly They are called abnormal cells Abnormal cells can become cancer

8 What is cancer? Cancer is a very serious illness which could get worse if not treated Lots of people who get cancer get better

9 Why do we have bowel tests? The bowel test looks for early signs of bowel cancer It could save your life!

10 Risks that may increase your chance of getting bowel cancer If someone in your family has had bowel cancer If you do not exercise very much If you are overweight If you eats lots of red meat

11 What if I decide not to do a bowel test? It is very important to go and see your doctor if you develop any unusual symptoms like: Bleeding from your bottom Pains in your tummy Feeling very tired a lot of the time Losing weight without trying If your bowel habits change It is very important to have your annual health check

12 What do I do if I m worried? Talk to a support worker, family member or friend Talk to your nurse or doctor Talk to Bowel Screening Wales Bowel Screening Wales Telephone Helpline

13 Section 2 The Bowel Test Kit

14 Your bowel test You will get a bowel test kit in the post It will be sent to your home

15 Who has bowel tests? All men and women between the ages of 50 and 74 will get a bowel test kit Bowel test kits are sent out every 2 years

16 You will get a: Letter Test kit Instruction leaflet Freepost envelope What will I get?

17 Your bowel test When you get your bowel test kit you can decide if you want to do the test Its your choice! YES

18 What if I decide not to do the bowel test? You will be sent a reminder letter in 6 weeks If you still don t want to do the test that s OK Its your choice! NO

19 What if I decide not to do a bowel test? It is very important to go and see your doctor if you develop any unusual symptoms like: Bleeding from your bottom Pains in your tummy Feeling very tired a lot of the time Losing weight without trying It is important to go for your annual health check

20 Deciding to do the bowel test Before you do the test you may want to talk to a Support Worker Friend Family member Bowel Screening Wales about how you will do the test Bowel Screening Wales Telephone Helpline

21 Will the test hurt? NO This bowel test kit will not hurt at all!

23 Can someone help me? If you need help you could ask a friend support worker family member

24 What if I make a mistake? If you make a mistake Don t worry Phone Bowel Screening Wales telephone helpline They will send out another kit Bowel Screening Wales Telephone Helpline

25 Doing the bowel test The tests should be done over 10 days but no longer

26 How do I do the bowel test? When you think you need a poo Take the test kit, pen and the instructions into the bathroom

27 Doing the bowel test Write your name and date of birth on the card Write the date on the card

28 Doing the bowel test You must catch your poo before it goes in the toilet Do not wee at the same time You can catch your poo on toilet paper like this

29 Doing you bowel test Other ideas for catching your poo are: use a small, clean plastic bag use a clean container Whatever you use make sure you can throw it in the bin afterwards

30 Doing the bowel test When you have collected your poo open the first flap on the card You will see two small windows

31 Doing your bowel test Take a cardboard stick Place the stick in the poo

32 Doing your bowel test You only need a little bit of poo

33 Doing the bowel test Spread the poo thinly on the first window

34 Doing the bowel test Using the second cardboard stick Take a small bit from a different part of the poo Remember you don t need a lot! Put it on the second window

35 Doing the bowel test It is important to remember to close the window Close the flap and tuck it under the coloured tab

36 Doing the bowel test Put the kit somewhere safe Don t leave the kit on the window sill Don t put it in the fridge Keep the kit away from children and animals

37 Very Important! Now wash your hands!

38 Doing the bowel test Now you can relax You have completed the first part of your test

39 Doing your bowel test Then next time you go for a poo you need to do the test again You need to do a poo on a different day

40 Doing the bowel test Write your name and date of birth on the second flap Write the date on the card too

41 Doing your bowel test This time you will lift up the 2 nd flap and put your poo on the windows the same as before

42 Very Important! Now wash your hands!

43 Doing your bowel test This is the last time! The next time you go for a poo you need to do the test again

44 Doing the bowel test Write your name and date of birth on the third flap Write the date on the card too

45 Doing your bowel test This time you will lift up the 3rd flap and put your poo on the windows the same as before

46 Doing the bowel test Check that you have written on the kit your name date of birth dates you did the tests Close the flaps Put the kit in the envelope

47 Doing the bowel test You are ready to send the kit in the post You do NOT need a stamp, it s FREE!

48 What happens to my bowel test? Your test kit goes to the laboratory to be tested You will get your results in the post in about 2 weeks time

49 Section 4 Your Bowel Test Results

50 When will I get my result? You will get a letter with the results about 2 weeks after sending your bowel test

51 What will the results say? The results will either say: Normal Result Unclear Result Abnormal Result Section 5 - Page 2

52 What if I don t understand? Talk to your support worker Friend Family member Talk to your Nurse or Doctor Bowel Screening Wales Telephone Helpline Telephone Bowel Screening Wales telephone helpline

53 A Normal Result This means that there was no blood found in your poo You don t need to have more bowel tests at this time You will be sent another bowel test kit in 2 years time

54 An Unclear Result You will need to do another bowel test kit at home again because the sample you sent in was not clear Bowel Screening Wales will send you another bowel test kit through the post

55 An Abnormal Result Your bowel test showed there was some blood in your poo You will now need some more tests

56 What do I do if I m worried? Talk to your Nurse or Doctor Talk to a support worker friend family member Bowel Screening Wales Telephone Helpline Talk to Bowel Screening Wales

57 Section 5 An Unclear Result

58 An Unclear Result The sample you sent in was not clear It may mean there was a slight trace of blood in your poo sample It does not mean that you have cancer

59 Bowel test kit for an unclear result Bowel Screening Wales will send you a new test kit This test is better at finding blood You take the test in the same way you did before but you only need to do it twice

60 Bowel test kit for an unclear result This bowel test kit only has one flap Once you start the test you must finish it within 10 days
