If students are nt aware that petry differs frm prse r academic writing, explain that it is similar t the difference between an essay and a sng. Review with students, clarifying r prviding examples as necessary. Step 2 Tw readings f the pem I Hear America Singing. Fr the first reading, the teacher reads the pem alud. Students read the pem silently a secnd time. Step 3 As students read the pem, they shuld circle any vcabulary that they d nt knw. Then, they shuld use a dictinary t define any unknwn wrds within the pem. Step 4 After reading the pem, students cmplete the wrksheet. They will identify tw petic devices in the pem. Students shuld cpy the examples, label each device, and explain the meanings and/r hw each device

In petry, the message is cmmunicated thrugh wrd chice, arrangement, sund, and rhythm.
