1 16 November 2006 Duties of Head Teacher Mr. J. Johnston General The role of the Head Teacher is, within the resources available, to conduct the affairs of the school to the benefit of the pupils and the community it serves, through pursuing objectives and implementing policies set by the education authority under the overall direction of the Director of Education. The Head Teacher shall be accountable to the education authority for the following list of duties and for such other duties as can reasonably be attached to the post: The Head Teacher, in our school, has the responsibility; 1) For the leadership, good management and strategic direction of the school. 2) For the management of all school policies including the one on the behaviour of pupils. 3) To manage all staff, and to provide the provision of professional advice and guidance to colleagues. 4) To management and to develop the school curriculum. The Head Teacher shall seek to provide the best possible education for all pupils and to promote the corporate life of the school. He shall be responsible for the day to day operation of the school and for the use of resources made available 5) To act as adviser to the School Board and to participate in the selection and appointment of the staff of the school. 6) To promote the continuing professional development of all staff and to ensure that all staff have an annual review of their development needs. 7) Of working in partnership with parents, other professionals, agencies and schools. 8) To manage the health and safety of all within the school premises. He shall be accountable to the authority for the execution of the following list of duties and for such other duties as can be reasonably attached to the post: He shall formulate aims and objectives for the school and secure policies to achieve those objectives Implement, monitor and evaluate these policies and revise them when appropriate
2 Promote the participation of all staff in these activities Consult regularly with union representatives It is recognised that a Head Teacher will need adequate support, training and resources in order to carry out his responsibilities in full. 6 16 November 2006 Principal Teachers General The Principal Teacher occupies a post of responsibility, working under the direction of the Head Teacher in accordance with the policies of the school and the Education Service. S/he has responsibility for 1) the leadership, good management and strategic direction of colleagues. 2) curriculum development and quality assurance. 3) contributing to the development of school policy in relation to the behaviour management of pupils. 4) the management and guidance of colleagues. 5) reviewing the CPD needs, career development and performance of colleagues. 6) the provision of advice, support and guidance to colleagues. 7) responsibility for the leadership, good management and strategic direction of pastoral care within the school. 8) the development of school policy for the behaviour management of pupils. 9) assisting in the management, deployment and development of pastoral care staff. 10) implementation of whole school policies dealing with guidance issues, pastoral care, assessment and pupil welfare. 11) working in partnership with colleagues, parents, other specialist agencies and staff in other schools as appropriate.
