1 PYMATUNING VALLEY LOCAL BOARD OF EDUCATION March 14, 2016 REGULAR SESSION MINUTES The Pymatuning Valley Local Board of Education met in regular session on Monday, March 14, 2016 at 6:00 pm in the High School Veteran s Memorial Performing Arts Center with the following members present: President Duane Marcy, Vice President Eric Senor, Mr. Curtis Harvey, Mr. Josh Peyton, and Mrs. Margaret Struna. President Marcy invited all present to join in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by each person introducing themselves. Mr. Candela along with Coach David Miller presented a special recognition plaque to wrestler Gaige Willis for being the OHSAA Division III State Runner Up. Mr. Candela, along with Sophie Hockran from the Pymatuning Area Chamber of Commerce, presented each student of the month with a certificate. Mr. Jackson introduced Paige Sloan, January High School student of the month. Mrs. Williams along with Mr. Todaro introduced Leah DeMoss, February Primary School student of the month. Jason Jewett, February Middle School student of the month, and Chad Mercer, February High School Student of the month, could not attend the meeting. Mr. Candela along with Mr. Kuthy and Ms. Meszaros introduced and recognized the Middle School Kent State Ashtabula Chemistry Challenge Placers, Natalie Frenelle-1 st place, Adam Romanko-3 rd place, Alexandria Knowles-5 th place, and Rachel Teter-6 th place. All students qualified for the state tournament in Toledo in April. The High School Philanthropy Group presented $15, in donations to seven community organizations. Mr. Glen Warren from the Ashtabula Foundation described the program. Robin Holden, School Improvement Supervisor, made a presentation to the audience on the district report card.

2 Each building principal gave a brief update for their building. Correspondence concerning a certified letter of retirement was reviewed. Mr. Harvey moved to approve the minutes of the February 8, 2016 Regular Meeting with Mr. Peyton seconding the motion. Roll call: Mr. Harvey-Yes, Mr. peyton-yes, Mr. Senor-Yes, Mrs. Struna-Yes, President Marcy-Yes. Motion passed. Mr. Senor moved to approve the Financial Reports for February with Mr. Harvey seconding the motion. Roll call: Mr. Senor-Yes, Mr. Harvey-Yes, Mr. Peyton-Yes, Mrs. Struna- Yes, President Marcy-Yes. Motion passed. Mrs. Struna moved to approve the Payments of Bills for February with Mr. Harvey seconding the motion. Roll call: Mrs. Struna-Yes, Mr. Harvey-Yes, Mr. Peyton-Yes, Mr. Senor- Yes President Marcy-Yes. Motion passed Mr. Harvey moved to approve the Investments for February with Mrs. Struna seconding the motion. Roll call: Mr. Harvey-Yes, Mrs. Struna-Yes, Mr. Peyton-Yes, Mr. Senor- Abstain, President Marcy-Yes. Motion passed. No one spoke during the opportunity for the public to speak on agenda items. There was no old business. following employment recommendations: 1a. Accept the retirement notice of Kristen Webker, High School English Teacher effective March 1, b. Accept the resignation of Kristen Webker, Freshman Class Advisor and High School Ticket Manager effective March 1, c. Employ Lori Tabor as a Saturday School Monitor effective February 27, d. Reassign Nikki Hootman from a 4.75 hour Middle School Cook to a 6.75 hour Middle School Cook effective March 14, e. Employ Holly Carr as a 5.25 hour Bus Driver effective March 21, 2016,

3 1f. Employ Andrea Drnek and Lonnie Mead as substitute Bus Drivers effective March 16, g. Approve the following for Primary School after school tutors at a rate of $17.00 per hour: a. Theresa Haines Mr. Senor moved to approve the employment recommendations with Mr. Peyton seconding the motion. Roll call: Mr. Senor- Yes, Mr. Peyton-Yes, Mr. Harvey-Yes, Mrs. Struna-Yes, President Marcy-Yes. Motion passed school calendar as presented in Exhibit A. Mr. Harvey made a motion to approve the school calendar with Mr. Peyton seconding the motion. Roll call: Mr. Harvey-Yes, Mr. Peyton-Yes, Mr. Senor-Yes, Mrs. Struna- No, President Marcy-Yes. Motion passed. resolution accepting the amounts and rates as determined by the Budget Commission and authorizing the necessary tax levies and certifying them to the County Auditor as presented in Exhibit B. Mr. Harvey made a motion to approve the resolution accepting amounts and rates with Mr. Peyton seconding the motion. Motion passed. disposal of a Primary School Electronic Keyboard, tag number Mr. Senor moved to approve the disposal with Mrs. Struna seconding the motion. Roll call; Mr. Senor-Yes, Mrs. Struna-Yes, Mr. Peyton-Yes, Mr. Senor-Yes, President Marcy-Yes. Motion passed. following donations: a. Marcy Equipment donated $ b. Target donated $93.65 to the High School Principal account as part of the Take Charge of Education

4 Campaign. c. The Bill and Ruth Service Foundation donated $2, for the purchase of Kindles for the 4 th grade class. d. The PV Athletic Boosters donated $2, to the baseball team and $2, to the softball team. Funds were the proceeds from the reverse raffle. Mr. Harvey made a motion to accept the donations with Mr. Senor seconding the motion. Roll call: Mr. Harvey-Yes, Mr. Senor-Yes, Mr. Peyton-Yes, Mrs. Struna-Yes, President Marcy-Abstain. Motion passed. During the time for staff with concerns Mr. Jackson thanked everyone for helping with the welcome of Gaige Willis back into town after the state wrestling tournament. During the time for board members with concerns to speak Mr. Senor said he was proud of Gaige Willis, all the students of the month and other winning students presented certificates, and thanked everyone for the donations to the district. No one spoke during the time for public comment. At 6:55 pm Mr. Senor moved to enter executive session for the purpose of discussing the possible discipline of an employee with possible action to follow. Mrs. Struna seconded the motion. Roll call: Mr. Senor-Yes, Mrs. Struna- Yes, Mr. Harvey-Yes, Mr. Peyton-Yes, President Marcy-Yes. Motion passed. Primary School Principal Mrs. Williams and attorney John Podgurski were asked to join the executive session. At 8:25 pm Mr. Peyton made a motion to exit executive session and to rejoin the regular meeting with Mr. Senor seconding the motion. Roll call: Mr. Peyton-Yes, Mr. Senor- Yes, Mr. Harvey-Yes, Mrs. Struna-Yes, President Marcy-Yes. Motion passed. Board members had a general discussion road table on various subjects. Mrs. Struna has questions on the Silver Snicker program for the fitness center, calendar start dates and issues with the county tourism group, and having an open house with the board and employees. Mr. Candela said he would check into the fitness program and also look into a good time and date for an open house. Mr. Marcy discussed classes held in the state on conceal carry in

5 schools. Mr. Candela also discussed school resource officer options and other staffing issues. At 8:51 pm Mr. Harvey made a motion to adjourn the meeting with Mrs. Struna seconding the motion.
