Q: How can the Series 2500 switches allow an IP address per VLAN, but only one default gateway? The HP Procurve Switch 2512 and 2524 are based on a TCP/IP stack that allows one default gateway per switch. This fact may require a different set of troubleshooting and management skills/tools for the network administrator who incorporate the Series 2500 switches into their network, versus a Switch 4000M, for example. The Switch 8000M, 4000M, 1600M, 2424M and 2400M products allow the user to configure multiple default gateways per switch (i.e. one per VLAN). I will present examples to illustrate the differences between how this family of products operates and the new Series 2500 switches operate with respect to default gateway (D.G.). Consider the following examples (all examples use a subnet mask of ): Lets define the path for a conversation (i.e. Ping, Telnet, HTTP, SNMP) between the management station and VLAN 2 on the Switch 4000M for the example above: management station > Router A > Switch 4000M (port 2) Switch 4000M (port 2) > Router A > management station Likewise, for a conversation between the management station and VLAN 3: management station > Router A > Switch 4000M (port 3)

Switch 4000M (port 3) > Router A > management station As each VLAN on the Switch 4000M has a default gateway configured, the response packets take the same path as the request packets. For this example, the path for a conversation (i.e. Ping,Telnet, HTTP, SNMP) between the management station and VLAN 2 on the Switch 2524 or 4000M is: management station > Router A > Switch 2524/4000M (port 2) Switch 2524/4000M (port 2) > Router A > management station However, for a conversation between the management station and VLAN 3: but the return path: management station > Router A > Switch 2524/4000M (port 3) Switch 2524/4000M (port 2) > Router A > management station Since VLAN 2 on the Switch 2524/4000M has a default gateway configured, the response packets take the same path as the request packets. For VLAN 3, however, the response packets must be transmitted out port 2 via the default gateway address and then back to the management station.

When remotely managing a device configured with multiple VLANs and limited to one default gateway, the return path for the response packets may be different than the path taken by the request packets. Lets define the path for a conversation (i.e. Ping,Telnet, HTTP, SNMP) between management station A and VLAN 2 on the Switch 4000M for the example above: management station A > Router A > Switch 4000M (port 2) Switch 4000M (port 2) > Router A > management station A Likewise, for a conversation between management station B and VLAN 3: management station B> Router B > Switch 4000M (port 3) Switch 4000M (port 3) > Router B > management station B As each VLAN on the Switch 4000M has a default gateway configured, the response packets take the same path as the request packets.

However, since we are not routing between VLAN 2 and VLAN 3, management station A will not be able to manage VLAN 3 on the Switch 4000M. Likewise, management station B will not be able to manage VLAN 2 on the Switch 4000M. Consider the request path from management station A to VLAN 3: mgmt Station A > Router A >? (Router A has no path to X network) And for the request path from management station B to VLAN 2: mgmt Station B > Router B >? (Router B has no path to X network) Can management station A manage the Switch 2524/4000M via VLAN 2? Yes. See previous example for explanation. Can management station A manage the Switch 2524/4000M via VLAN 3? No. See previous example for explanation. Can management station B manage the Switch 2524/4000M via VLAN 2? No. See previous example for explanation. Can management station B manage the Switch 2524/4000M via VLAN 3? No! The conversation between management station B and the Switch 2524/4000M is: management station B > Router B > Switch 2524/4000M (port 3) But the return path:

Switch 2524/4000M (port 2) > Router A >? (Router A has no path to mgmt station B!) The solution to this problem: Connect Router A and Router B and turn on routing on this link. Both management station A and B will now be able to manage the Switch 2524/4000M via either VLAN. In conclusion, to successfully manage HP switches with one default gateway, be aware of network topology, routing, VLANs and of course, the location of the default gateway.
