Are we prepared for the future! Why How What Why How To create the possibility to automate sensitive tasks To enable totally new assembly concepts To make the collaboration between humans and robots possible To relieve the workers at ergonomically bad workplaces The give the possibility to produce in high-wage countries High-Tech robot with integrated torque sensors Streamlined lightweight construction Powerful operating system What LBR iiwa - an intelligent industrial work assistant for future oriented production concepts KUKA Sy stems Larry Drake March 2014 Slide 50
KUKA revolutionizes the robotic market KUKA strength through innovation LBR iiwa 1 is safe, sensitive and easy to operate. LBR iiwa 1 is winning KUKA new customers. Increased robot penetration at existing customers TOMORROW TODAY 1 iiwa = intelligent industrial work assistant KUKA Sy stems Larry Drake March 2014 Slide 51

Forms of production inside a plant Manual operation Automation Levels of automation KUKA Sy stems Larry Drake March 2014 Slide 55 Source: Daimler
Productivity Future prospects for the view of an automotive supplier Evolution of automotive production: Where are we going? From manual operation to + High flexibility - Elderly society - Limited production + High productivity - Less flexibility - No reaction to volatile markets + + Torque-sensitive robots + Learning by teaching KUKA Sy stems Larry Drake March 2014 Slide 56 Source: Daimler
Forms of Human-Robot Collaboration (HRC) No fixed guard, virtual safety fence contact not desired, unlikely (e.g. photo-electric barrier) Fixed safety fence contact not possible Robot workspace Operator workspace Shared workspace Shared workspace, but exclusive motion contact possible, but only with stationary robot e.g. in the case of industrial robot as handling assistant Shared workspace contact desired, simultaneous motion (e.g. manual guidance) Shared workspace contact not desired, but possible KUKA Sy stems Larry Drake March 2014 Slide 57
Benefits of human-robot collaboration Robots have their strength in the repetition of simple handling tasks. Humans, on the other hand, have unique cognitive skills, such as understanding the task. The combination of human and robot can greatly rationalize tasks, as long as the work is optimally divided between them. Human-robot collaboration then enables variable automation. Tasks for which complete automation is too expensive or too complex can thus be partially rationalized. Non-ergonomic workstations are replaced by robots. KUKA Sy stems Larry Drake March 2014 Slide 58
Classification Clusters of applications with a LBR iiwa The LBR iiwa was specifically developed and designed to be able to touch a human hazard-free Smooth and large-scaled surface structures, no clamping points Robot position within working environment will be monitored in safe technology In case of crushing or clamping hazard, robot is able to measure and limit forces as well as to switch to a stiffness mode If robot moves within the remaining area, the speed limited so that no injuries are caused in case there is a dynamic contact The KUKA Light Weight Robot LBR iiwa is equipped with all basic requirements to be used as a safe assistant in collaboration with a human being! KUKA Sy stems Larry Drake March 2014 Slide 59
LBR iiwa as production assistant The worker uses the robots for different tasks at various places within a factory. The cognitive and physical skills of a human being will be combined with the repeatability, precision and resilience of the robot. 27 Summary The industrial production of the future demands for concepts beyond the full automation. Human-Robot- Collaboration is a module for new and versatile production concepts For a substantial collaboration the topics of safety and operator interaction need to be further developed in an industry suitable way. The KUKA group is the only supplier world-wide taking care of these challenges in a holistic approach Our vision: A human being will treat a robot in the same way that he would treat a human colleague. Full automation Prosesses sensitive assembly Human-Robot Collaboration Mobile Manipulation KUKA Sy stems Larry Drake March 2014 Slide 68
