3 Welcome to study at Haaga-Helia Open University of Applied Sciences! Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences educates the business community and the service industry experts and researches and develops these fields of knowledge and activity. Our fields of education are business, information technology, hotel, restaurant and tourism, management assistant, journalism, sports management and vocational teacher education. Haaga-Helia s students create a workplace networks while studying. Students are supported by approximately 650 employees with high level of national and international expertise. In year 2015, there were more than 800 students at Haaga-Helia Open University of Applied Sciences. Haaga-Helia Open University of Applied Sciences is intended for everyone regardless of age and basic education. You can take part in individual courses or you can take wider study modules. Haaga-Helia Open University of Applied Sciences studies are for you if you are planning to complete a Bachelor s degree, you want to develop your working skills, you are planning profession replacement or you want to improve basic knowledge or language skills. At Haaga-Helia Open University of Applied Sciences you cannot complete a degree, but if you accomplish a minimum of 60 credits of the degree program you are interested in, you can apply for admission as a degree student through the open path. Then you do not have to take part in the entrance examination. This guide is designed to help you to begin your studies smoothly and to find answers to your questions about the studies. 4 1 Starting your studies 1.1 Courses offered Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences has nearly 40 degree programmes in Helsinki, Porvoo and Vierumäki. You can study in English and Finnish. We offer adult education degree programmes, and also Master s level degree programmes (Master's degree). Haaga-Helia Open University is intended for everyone regardless of age and basic education. You can choose courses from all degree programmes (excluding degree programmes in Vierumäki campus). Please check the course descriptions, whether there are prerequisites set for courses. In Haaga-Helia Open University of Applied Sciences you cannot complete a degree but the studies can be accredited towards the degree, if you are later accepted as a degree student. It is not possible to complete thesis or internship in Haaga-Helia Open University of Applied Sciences. If you want to study in Open Bachelor level studies conducted in English, you must demonstrate your adequate English language skills with a language certificate by submitting it to the Student Affairs Office. Check out the list of approved language certificates. To be eligibile for Open Master level studies, requirement is the completion of an applicable Bachelor s degree or equivalent and at least three (3) years of work experience in the specific field of the Master s degree you are applying to, acquired after completion of the Bachelor s degree. Please attach the language certificate (Bachelor level) or degree and work certificates (Master level) to the electronic application form. You can also aim to study towards a degree by accomplishing a minimum of 60 credits from courses that are included or otherwise suitable for a specific degree programme. It is recommended for the Open Path students to complete the basic studies of the degree programme. Check out the degree programme students guides to familiarize yourself with the course lists and recommended study schedules for the studies. Haaga-Helia Open University of Applied Sciences schedules, course descriptions and application instructions you will find at Course Offering page. 1.2 Planning the studies and student counseling When planning your studies, please visit our Course Offering page to familiarize yourself with the degree programme that you are interested in, courses included in the degree programme. On the same page you can also see the schedules for the courses. There are offered Haaga-Helia Open University Bachelor's degree programme implementations. Open University of Applied Sciences students can sign up on all of those courses and implementations. 3
5 At Haaga-Helia Open University of Applied Sciences you can accomplish individual courses or larger study programmes. You should always relate your studies to time and endurance. At Haaga-Helia Open University of Applied Sciences studies can also be done along working. You can have guidance for planning your studies from the Study Counselor or from Haaga-Helia's Student Affairs Offices and Admission Services. You can find our contact information at the end of this guide. 1.3 Lenght of studies Course s extents are expressed in credits (ECTS). One credit point is an average of 27 hours of student work. Bachelor degree is 210 credits. For full-time students annually recommended credits amount is about 60 credits during one academic year. This can be done also in the Haaga-Helia Open UAS. 1.4 Timetable for semesters The academic year is divided into five periods. Between periods there is at least one intensive week when there is no teaching, with the exception of intensive courses Autumn 2016 Autumn term begins and ends Autumn term lessons will be during Intensive week: (week 33) 4th period: (weeks 34-41) Intensive week: (week 42) 5th period: (weeks 43-50) Holidays: (weeks 51-52) Spring 2017 Spring term begins and ends Spring term lessons will be during Intensive weeks: (weeks 1-2) 1st period: (weeks 3-11) Intensive week: (week 12) 2nd period: (weeks 13-20) Intensive weeks: (weeks 21-24) Holidays: 6.1., (week 8), 14.4., 17.4., 1.5. and In addition teaching ends at 5.30pm. 4
6 1.5 Sign up for student You can sign up for student in Haaga-Helia Open University of Applied Sciences by electronic form. When signing up for a student, applicant pay tuition fee of 150 euros for the Autumn term There is admission criteria for the English courses and Bachelor's degrees, which should be consulted before registering. For English courses is required certificate of English language skills. On Master level courses students must be completed at least a bachelor's degree and have to have at least three years of work experience after graduation. Deliver qualifications issued certificates by attaching them to the registration form. After we verify your eligibility, you will receive an with further instructions. 1.6 Enrolment for courses in WinhaWille student interface To be able to enroll for the courses in WinhaWille student interface, you must register as a student to Haaga-Helia Open University of Applied Sciences and pay the semester fee. After the registration you will receive a username and password for WinhaWille. It is recommended to change the default password after the first login. If you forget your WinhaWille password, you can get a new password from Student Affairs Office. When applying for a new password please bring your ID card or call Student Affairs Office. Sign to WinhaWille at See the instructions for registration. In WinhaWille you can also check your enrolment situation and grades, update your contact information and provide feedback on the course. 7 1.7 Enrolment times Enrolment for Autumn term courses starts on 30 th May. You can enroll for courses until the beginning of the courses and students are accepted based on the enrolment order. 1 st semester courses are exception because degree students are prioritized and Open UAS students are accepted in free seats in the order of enrollment. On those courses you can start to register 18 th August onwards. Haaga-Helia Open University of Applied Sciences students can enroll for all degree programme courses, with the exception of degree programmes in Vierumäki. Enrolment for courses is not possible by phone. Students are selected for courses in enrolment order. There can be more enrolments than more than what is indicated, so you should register for the queue. Seats might become available later if some students do not attend. Be always present on the first lesson! If you have a heavy reason and you can t attend, please inform the teacher by . Students confirm their place in the course by being present on the first lesson. If a course has already started, teacher responsible for the course will decide can student participate the course. Teachers' address forms are firstname.surename@haaga-helia.fi. 1.8 Haaga-Helia s information systems Before starting your studies, start using your Haaga-Helia address and follow it daily. Log in to Haaga-Helia's internal network MyNet, as well as e-learning environment Moodle. You log in to schools network, as well as the school workstations and to Myy-portal with domain username. A domain username is valid for 30 days after the end of the studies. Each student who ends their studies will receive an indicating the exact date when the ID will be deleted. This means you have 30 days to copy or move s and the rest of your home directory somewhere else. After removing address it can t be re-sended to any other address. MyNet- and, WinhaWille rights expire at the same time as you finish your studies. Also HAKA logging services (eg. Adobe Connect, Dreams Park Standard) terminates at the same time you finish your studies. We recommend every student to have an own device. For study purposes you can use almost any computer which is not more than 2-3 years old. If you are purchasing a new device, then you should buy one, which it is pleasant to work with (a proper keyboard and display, at least 4 GB of memory and a decent battery). Operating system can be almost anything, but preferred are Windows 7, 8.1 (not Win RT) or 10, MacOS X 10.7 or newer or Linux (for technically-orientated). Chromebook is not recommended because it is not fully compatible with Microsoft Office products. Haaga-Helia s IT Services does not install anything in the students' computers, but help will be given as far as possible. Contacts via Helpdesk (tel , helpdesk@haaga-helia.fi). Haaga-Helia s ICT-services are delivered to the students' own devices mainly through our virtual desk environment (VDI), which you can use also outside the campuses. It requires only the Citrix Receiver software (receiver.citrix.com) to be installed on your device. Some of the services are used with a browser. Therefore we have no specific hardware requirements. 6
8 Student can use computers, scanners and printers in all Haaga-Helia campuses. There is the color printing possibility in some of work premises for students. All students must follow the rules of use, information security and online learning agreement to use computers and information systems. To have access to Haaga- Helia workstations, student must log in with domain username. If problems, please contact IT Services: tel or Domain and password When you have enrolled as a student in Haaga-Helia Open UAS, you will receive your student number and usernames for Haaga-Helia systems via . Instructions how to create domain password are included in the . You will receive the password for WinhaWille, where you enroll for courses, via text message. User names are valid for one semester at a time. If you continue your studies after one semester, your account will be activated once you have rehistered as a student for the next semester Haaga-Helia Open UAS students will have access to Haaga-Helia system. address form is: firstname.surename@myy.haaga-helia.fi. It is important to follow your Haaga-Helia actively because all study related issues eg. possible schedule changes will be sent to this address. On the website you will find information and guidance on learning context, as well as announcements of events and courses. The site is monitored on a regular basis. Sign in with domain to MyNet at Moodle Moodle is Haaga-Helia's electronic learning environment and platform, where each course has its own page. Moodle is a document database and a discussion area. Moodle is an opportunity to give and receive feedback, as well as restore assignments. Each teacher activates your study period on Moodle page, so you don't need to log in to Moodle. 9 2 Studying at the Haaga-Helia Open University of Applied Sciences 2.1 Forms of studying Haaga-Helia Open UAS is a practical study of theory, where practice and work meet. Responsibility for learning is for the students themselves, and teachers and counselors are there to support students in their studies. You can study by the classroom teaching or do online studies. If you already have been acquired from work or studies for course skills, you can complete the course by showing your knowledge (please read more 2.1.3) Contact classes Contact class education is based on the teaching of the courses is usually a certain period of time once or twice a week. Intensive courses refer to courses in which teaching takes place only during an intensive period (see the academic year schedule). Teaching techniques can be lectures, exams, group work and essays. Study modules often include a variety of written assignments. Haaga-Helia is used for reports that are used in all written reports. You can find instructions for reporting MyNet -> Studies -> Assignments reporting guidelines Online courses You can also take courses online when the entire course is carried out in electronic learning environment Moodle. If such a virtual course will consist of the initial appointment or Haaga-Helia premises do the exam, it is indicated separately in the course schedule. Virtual courses require as much work as courses with classroom training. In virtual courses, students can schedule their courses more flexible, according to their own schedules Proofing your studies If you are at work, at school or in their free time acquired knowledge of a course content, you can display it. Ways to display may be, for example: a portfolio an evaluative essay of their own competence a knowledge based diary an employer's certificate / a recommendation an interview an exam a skills test 8
10 a project an oral assessment an expert lecture a written summary of the non-formal education and experience a combination of the previous methods Course modules will be evaluated on the same criteria and scale as the other studies. If you don't pass the test, you can make the course a normal way. You can find more information about the skills tests and their schedules from MyNet under Study -> Prior learning recognition and validation Online exam Many of the courses are possible to carry out as an electronic exam. The possibility is always multiplied in the beginning of the course. Electronic exam is hold at the class rooms which can be found in Haaga, Malmi and Pasila libraries and reading room 2221 in Porvoo. There is recording video surveillance in the class room. Once you have agreed with the electronic exam in the execution of the course with the teacher, book one of the exam times in any exam places via electronic exam service. School network from outside the exam reservation is made at Re-exams Course perform often exam, which is hold at the end of the course. For exam you do not need to register separately. The student have right to renew the exam twice, at the exam days, where you need to be registered. Information of retakes schedule and registration you can find from MyNet -> Studies -> Re-examinations 2.2 Evaluating the studies Haaga-Helia Open University studies performance has the same requirements as the degree students and courses are assessed at Haaga-Helia practices. Course grades will be seen in Winha after three weeks of completing the course. Student can see the grades in WinhaWille. Grades are assessed by the following scale: excellent (5), very good (4), good (3), satisfactory (2), weak (1) and fail (0). Some courses evaluation can be done on a scale of pass / fail. 9
11 2.3 Giving the course feedback Students evaluate their own learning and teaching of the course by filling out evaluation forms after each study period using an electronic form. The feedback is given anonymously and is used as well as the quality of the monitoring of the development of courses. 2.4 Library services Haaga-Helia library is a modern and versatile education library. Our service is designed especially for our students and the staff. The library is open to all information seekers. Borrowing rights may be acquired by a library card. The library offers its customers for example, lending services, information services, data acquisition training, remote services and facilities and equipment in the work. Each Haaga-Helia unit has a library, which is available to all students. Library opening hours and contact information 2.5 Applying for a degree student Open Path studies Open Path studies are suitable for students whose goal is to became a degree student and perform Bachelor s or Master's degree. Open Path Studies are for carrying out the Open UAS student to complete the studies in the same pace as the actual degree students with exception of job placement and the thesis Applying for a degree student by the open path You can apply through the open path, if you have completed the Finnish Open UAS courses at least 60 credits of a specific degree or if you have completed at least 60 credits suitable for the degree but you have stopped your studies, and you do not have a valid right to study in any Finnish University of Applied Sciences. Through the open path you can apply to all Haaga-Helia in Finnish and English degrees, including higher degrees. However, by open path you can't apply for Vierumäki degrees. Studies can be completed in another Open University of Applied Sciences but university studies are not acceptable. Open path instructions and application form can be found here Accreditation of degree studies completed at Open University of Applied Sciences If you are chosen as a degree student to Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences, you can ask for a degree course for the identification and recognition (AHOT), which is part of the official approval of the course. Accreditation decisions are made according to the applicable qualification requirements. 10
12 2.6 Student benefits and studying as an unemployed Studying in the Open University is part-time studies and that is why Open University's students are not eligible for state student financial aid (study grant and loans) and also not for the social benefits (eg. student health services, student discounts) or a meal subsidy. You can find more information about adult education at Unemployed students should find out in advance of their local Employment and Economic Development Centre for open degree studies the affection to unemployment compensation. Unemployed students entitled to unemployment allowance are generally determined according to whether it is a primary or secondary studying. Part-time study is not usually an obstacle to obtaining the unemployment allowance. The Unemployment Security Act defines part-time studies such a studies the curriculum workload is less than an average of 25 hours per week or 5 credits each month. Unemployment allowance matters can be resolved at the local Employment and Economic Development Centre. Open University students can study under certain conditions, full-time self-reliance studies without losing unemployment benefit. You can get unemployment benefit study period, if you are registered with the Employment and Economic Development Centre as a jobseeker and job search is valid. Condition is also that you are at least 25 years old and that the Employment and Economic Development Centre has assessed the training needs and learning to improve the skills and opportunities in the labor market. If your studies in support are agreed at the Employment and Economic Development Centre, you get the studies with regard to unemployment benefit or social support. In addition, you will be paid compensation for expenses. The duration of the study is not requirement but the support in studies of the unemployment benefit can be received up to 24 months of study per study entirety. Unemployment insurance earnings and the basic daily maximum is also consumed during the study period. If the study can t support by unemployment benefits, you may still be able to study at a secondary activity, without losing your unemployment benefit. 14 4 Study vocabulary Academic year begins in August and ends in July. The academic year is divided into five periods: autumn; periods 4 and 5, spring; periods 1 and 2 and summer; period 3. Classroom teaching means studying arranged in a defined location and at defined time. Students participate in lectures, training groups or to the other tasks given by teachers. Course ID / Implementation number is required for the enrolment for a course in WinhaWille. The code can be, for example, LEA1HO The first part of the symbol is defined by what the course is about and the second part is a reference to what the course is concerned. Condition of terms means that the course participation is required prior knowledge. Conditions of terms are described in the course descriptions. HELGA is Haaga-Helia's Student Union in which degree students belong. HOPS refer to the student's personal study plan. HOPS is the student's own plan of what courses he/she intends to take. Intensive course is a course which is held on the intensive week. Intensive course takes place at the beginning of a period, the end of the period or between periods. Studying on intensive weeks means performing the studies during that week, when the class room teaching are from Mondays to Fridays at o clock or from Mondays to Thursdays at In some cases, the course can continue to the next period, for example when student need time to project work. Implementation is the group of the course. There are many implementations for a course during the semester. ECTS credit corresponds to 27 hours of students work. Course extents are expressed in credits. Transcript of record will show all the completed courses and the grades. You can request a transcript of records from Student Affairs Office at the end of your studies if necessary. In WinhaWille, you can the completed studies in your ISP. Open path students are students, who want to earn a minimum of 60 credits in Open University of Applied Sciences. Period consists of eight weeks, when the classroom teaching is organized. Period also includes the preceding and following intensive weeks and holidays. The online course is entirely electronic course and studying takes place in learning environment Moodle. WinhaWille is the student interface to WinhaPro -student management system and student planning electronic management system. It allows you to enroll for courses, check your enrolment situation and grades, update your contact information and provide feedback on the course. 13
