1 VOLLEYBALL DAY 1 LESSON PLAN Teacher: Jennifer Huff Date: 10/12/09 Activity: Volleyball - Bumping Level: 9 th -10 th grade Student Learning Psychomotor: The students will be able to bump the volleyball accurately after being taught the proper Objective: technique and allowed time to practice. Cognitive: The students will be able to explain the role of the legs, trunk, and arms in the forearm pass. Affective: The students will be able to show sportsmanship by following the rules that have been set up for the day and encourage their teammates. Literacy: Demonstrate all skills very slowly and circulate class to assist English language learners. Materials & Equipment: NASPE Standard(s): 25 volleyballs Standard 1: Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities. Standard 2: Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities. Standard 5: Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings. Time Activity Class Organization & Procedures Skill Techniques: Important Points Cues or Important Points 3 min Students will sit in their squads and wait In squads Listen to teacher Listen to teacher for attendance and instruction 7 min Instant Activity Warm up jog around In general space & and stretching in squads squads 5 min Set Induction Go over today s activities, introduce the game of volleyball, and ask who has been to a game or played before. Go over expectations of students. 10 min Bumping Demonstrate correct form for bumping the volleyball. Get in 8 lines of 5-6 students. One student will stand ten feet away from the line of students. That person with toss the ball to the first person 5 times, then rotate. 8 min Bumping With one person as a leader and the rest in a semi circle the leader In squads Listen to teacher Go over the different skills we will cover in volleyball, bumping, setting, underhand serve, and overhand serve. Cognitive: The students will be able to explain how to use their arms to serve a volleyball after being taught the proper technique and allowed time to practice. Affective: The students will be able to show sportsmanship by following the rules that have been set up for the day and encourage their teammates. The students will try their hardest doing each drill. Literacy: Demonstrate all skills very slowly and circulate class to assist English language learners. Materials & Equipment: NASPE Standard(s): 25 volleyballs, 3 volleyball courts, 3 chairs Standard 1: Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities. After trying the overhand serve students may return to underhand serving (students should be successful). 2 min Go over rotation of 6 spots. Start in the serving spot and move clockwise around the court so students see each spot. 10 min Around the world Students are broken into three groups and all on the same side of the 3 volleyball courts. One person will sit in a chair in the first rotation spot. The other team members will try to serve the ball to that member. When they catch the ball the person who served takes the next rotation spot. If time allows Practice serving, setting, & bumping in a game scenario Break students into 6 different teams and allow them to scrimmage each other.
