1 Options for Migrating to Lync Online Most Office 365 plans will include the option to license users for Lync Online. Lync Online allows users to collaborate, share documents, desktops, and other content, participate in Audio and/or Video conferences, see users availability, location, chat via Instant Message, and more. Each of these features can be controlled by both an administrator and/or the end user. Lync Online allows users to connect to the service from almost any mobile device, tablet, browser, and PC/MAC computer. This is a big advantage leveraging Microsoft s infrastructure. You will no longer potentially need to deploy a large amount of infrastructure to use the service. Deployment Scenarios: Hybrid Lync Online supports a hybrid deployment when running Lync 2013 (either native or co-existence with OCS 2007 R2 or Lync Server 2010) this option will give users the least impact by migrating their contact list, access controls, and other settings related to the user. Meetings will need to be updated with the new meeting URL. Cutover if the on-premises solution does not have an Edge Server, a Lync 2010 environment, or co-existence is not necessary, you can cutover users to Lync Online. This method will most likely have a few hour outage for the users and the users will need to re-add any users to their contact list as well as setup any meetings. New Deployment if there is no existing on-premises deployment, you can license users for Lync Online in Office 365 to begin providing services to the user. Minimum Requirements: You must have a Lync 2010 or Lync 2013 Edge Server installed and configured in the topology for a hybrid deployment to Office 365 to be successful. Lync Edge Server can be configured for Edge only or additional roles. Feature Comparison: When comparing when to use Lync Online versus Lync Server on-premises, there are a number of features available on Lync Online, but not all features are available. With the latest version of Office 365, you are able to move users between on-premises and Lync Online, if you meet the various hybrid requirements.
