1 Using Real Life Data to Understand Deforestation Margy Goodman INTRODUCTION This lesson provides data detailing the forest cover of select countries. Students will use this information to practice math skills and data analysis to understand trends in global deforestation. LESSON OVERVIEW Grade Level & Subject: 7-10: Math, Social Studies/Geography, Environmental Science Length: One class period Objectives: After completing this lesson, students will be able to: Practice math and critical thinking skills using practical, real-life numbers. Recognize trends in data and use them to predict future changes. Understand the connection between changing forest cover and the problems deforestation pose to environmental and human health. National Standards Addressed: This lesson addressed the following National Education Standards 1 Content Standard: NSS-G.K-12.3 PHYSICAL SYSTEMS Understand the physical processes that shape the patterns of Earth's surface. Understand the characteristics and spatial distribution of ecosystems on Earth's surface. Content Standard: NSS-G.K-12.5 ENVIRONMENT AND SOCIETY Understand how human actions modify the physical environment. Understand how physical systems affect human systems. Understand the changes that occur in the meaning, use, distribution, and importance of resources. Content Standard: NS PERSONAL AND SOCIAL PERSPECTIVES 1

2 Personal and community health Population growth Natural resources Environmental quality Natural and human-induced hazards Content Standard: NM-DATA DATA ANALYSIS & PROBABILITY Develop and evaluate inferences and predictions that are based on data Materials Needed: Calculator Reproducible: Global Forest Cover (as projection or handout for each student) World map or globe Assessment: Students will be assessed through the following: Completion and thoroughness of Activity One Participation in Activity Two LESSON BACKGROUND Relevant Vocabulary: Deforestation: The cutting down and removal of all or most of the trees in a forested area. Information: Deforestation is a leading cause of environmental degradation. Not only is the loss of trees detrimental to the animals that inhabit the forests, but tree loss also contributes to climate change (by reducing carbon sequestration), damages ecosystems, increases erosion and soil loss, and decreases air quality. The topic of deforestation is important for students to understand because it has so many negative effects on the environment and humans. Further Resources: Importance of rainforests: Find rainforest facts at: Explore other rainforest threats at: and

4 Australia Bolivia Brazil Cameroon Canada China Colombia may be because of greater population demands, increased development, or lack of/decreased regulation of land and resources. Canada and Egypt stayed the same. China, Japan, France, Spain, the UK and the US all gained forest area. This might have to do with population decline, decrease in development, increased regulation of land and resources, etc. Democratic Republic of the Congo Egypt Ethiopia France Germany Guatemala Honduras in 1990 in 2000 % change since 1990 forest in 1990 forest in 2000 km 2 km 2 % % % India Indonesia Japan Mexico Nicaragua Nigeria Paraguay Peru Philippines Spain Thailand United Kingdom

5 United States Venezuela Activity Two: Putting It Together 1. As a follow-up discussion, pose the following question to the students. Refer back to introductory brainstorm: a) Why is deforestation harmful to the Earth? Forests provide resources for humans (lumber, medicine, food, etc.) and countries with resources to export, prevent pollution through carbon sequestration and water filtration, encourage biodiversity, provide homes/habitats for animals, contribute to the ecosystem by providing food/shade/shelter for plants and animals, remediate soils, prevent erosion, clean the air and provide oxygen, etc. Without them, we would lose all of these. b) Why does deforestation occur and how does it impact humans and the environment? Deforestation occurs because of greater population demands, increased development, or lack of/decreased regulation of land and resources. c) Might deforestation have an impact on global climate change? Definitely. Trees sequester carbon, which is the major contributing greenhouse gas leading to global warming. They also serve to regulate temperatures and mitigate some of the increased weather events but preventing erosion, controlling floodwaters, etc. d) Why are forests important for soil? They help to filter toxins and other pollution from soil. Their roots hold soil in place and prevent erosion, especially lost topsoil. They also decompose to form new soil. e) Why are forests important for human health? Forests provide resources for humans (lumber, medicine, food, etc.), prevent pollution through carbon sequestration and water filtration, clean the air and provide oxygen, etc. Extension: Have students choose a country from the list to research why their forest coverage may have increased or decreased. What is it today? Why? CONCLUSION At the end of this lesson, students will have strengthened their data analysis and math skills, and gained an understanding of how their work in math class can be applied to real life situations. In addition, they should have increased their knowledge regarding other countries environmental situations compared to the United States situation. In understanding countries environmental conditions, students will have a grasp of how environmental degradation (through deforestation in particular) threatens human health.
