A MAN OF THE CLOTH Genesis 37:3 The life of Joseph could be summarized by a simple statement - From Dream To Destiny. Joseph is going to be led by God to follow a most interesting path. The pathway of his life will follow in these steps... From the Pit to Potiphar s House From Potiphar s House to the Prison From the Prison to the Palace Joseph will set for us the absolute need of walking by faith and not by sight. God never spoke or appeared to Joseph as he did with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Insight: All along this pathway Joseph will manifest his destiny by the wearing of different garments. Consider the garments that Joseph will have to wear. 1. The Garment of a Son - (Genesis 37:1-36) 2. The Garment of a Slave - (Genesis 39:1-6) 3. The Garment of a Sufferer - (Genesis 39:7-20) 4. The Garment of a Seer - (Genesis 39:21-40:23) 5. The Garment of a Savior - (Genesis 41 - Genesis 45) Joseph will pass through moments of great change as he walks the pathway of God s making. The Moment of Destiny as a Son. The Moment of Decision as a Slave. The Moment of Development as a Sufferer. The Moment of Deliverance as a Seer. The Moment of Discovery as a Savior It has been said, Clothes make the Man! This was certainly true in Joseph s life. His life was to be defined by the garments that he was called upon to wear. Why study the life of a man who lived so many years ago? The answer is given in Romans 15:4. Looking at the life of Joseph will lead us to look at and examine our own life. The Bible declares in Proverbs 24:10
If thou faint in the day of adversary thy strength is small. Joseph will show us what a great faith can accomplish for the glory of God. THE GARMENT OF A SON Genesis 37:1-36 Joseph s story will actually cover one fourth of the book of Genesis. Joseph s life is a testimony of how God can move us from tragedy to triumph. Joseph will remain faithful to God no matter what his circumstances may be. He holds to his faith in God and never acts against God s will for his life. The life of Joseph begins in Genesis 37 where we see Joseph identified with his first garment The Garment of a Son In this first drama we want to observe 4 key elements: AN HONORED POSITION In Genesis 37:1-4 we learn of the position of Joseph as given to him by his father, Jacob. He was his father s favorite son. Joseph was the son of Jacob s favorite wife, Rachel. Jacob marks out the special place of Joseph by 2 things; 1. His Love for Joseph 2. His Gift to Joseph From the very beginning we learn of the strife that will occur between Joseph and his brothers. They view Joseph with a hatred that grows out of their jealousy. Insight: The visible sign of Jacob s love for Joseph was the coat of many colors. This was a garment of royalty and not the garment of a shepherd, (2 Samuel 13:18). The rights of the firstborn are the issue at hand. Joseph replaces Reuben as the leader of the family. The manycolored coat comes from the Hebrew pas which means extremities or wristed and speaks of a garment that goes to the wrist and to the ankles. This is the garment of nobility.
A HEAVENLY PROPHECY In Genesis 37:5-11 we learn of the path that Joseph was to walk. Joseph has a series of 2 dreams that will mark out his future destiny. 1. A Dream focusing Upon the Earth - (Genesis 37:5-8) 2. A Dream focusing Upon the Heavens - (Genesis 37:9-10) The response of his family is what one would expect. There are two responses that are recorded. A response from his brothers, envied and a response from his father, observed the saying. Joseph being but 17 years of age may have been naïve in sharing these dreams with his family. No doubt he might have thought that they would have rejoiced with him but that was not to be. The record of his brother s hatred is marked out, (Genesis 37:4, 5, 8, and 11). There is a great enmity that existed in the hearts of his brothers toward him. This enmity will now be expressed by an act of great cruelty. A HORRENDOUS PLOT In Genesis 37:12-35 we learn now of the plot of Joseph s brother to kill him. Only Reuben stood against this plot to kill Joseph, (Genesis 37:21). This plot leads the brothers to the following treatment of Joseph; 1. Their Deeds - They stripped Joseph of his coat, shoved Joseph into a pit, and then sold Joseph into slavery, Genesis 37:23-28). 2. Their Deception - They now have to deceive their father concerning Joseph s absence, (Genesis 37:31-35). The brothers had been waiting for a long time for the opportunity to settle scores with Joseph as first mentioned in Genesis 37:2. A HUMILIATING PLIGHT In Genesis 37:36 we learn of Joseph being slave into slavery and then taken to Egypt and sold to Potiphar. Insight: This begins the 400 years of the seed of Abraham being in Egypt as foretold by God to Abraham, (Genesis 15:13).
Joseph must have had all kinds of thoughts going through his head. He would soon learn that God is setting his feet on a path of God s making and not that of man. Joseph s garment of a Son will now give way to his garment of a Slave. Joseph is going to learn that there is a great gulf between dream and destiny. The dream first given when he was 17 years old will not become destiny until he is 30 years old. Joseph will have to face 3 giants along the way; 1. The Giant of Discouragement 2. The Giant of Detour/Distractions 3. The Giant of Doubt Joseph will learn what God states in his word, For I know the thoughts that I think toward you saith the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil to give you an expected end. (Jeremiah 29:11) THE GARMENT OF A SLAVE Genesis 37:36 Joseph is called upon to change garments from that of a son to that of a slave, (Genesis 39:1-6). Joseph becomes the property of an Egyptian named Potiphar. Joseph makes the move from favorite son to fellow slave. Pause: The events recorded in Genesis 38 seem to be somewhat out of place but that is not the case. This chapter sets before us a contrast between Judah and Joseph. Judah pictures the first Adam who falls to temptation. Joseph pictures the last Adam who resists temptation. In a dispensational perspective we see Israel in a time of travail in contrast with the Gentiles who are in a time of blessing. The loss to Israel is the gain for the Gentiles, (John 1:11-12). In Genesis 39 we pick up the story of Joseph and learn that he has been sold into slavery. In this experience we will observe the providence of God in the life of Joseph. God is preparing Joseph for greater use in the future. This chapter builds upon 3 lines of thought.
THE STEWARDSHIP OF JOSEPH In Genesis 39:2 we learn that Joseph is a servant to his master Potiphar. Joseph is a bond slave for he has been purchased by another. Paul referred to himself as a bond servant. The bond servant was one whose will was consumed by the will of another. The bond servant served due to a devotion to the master while a hired servant served out of necessity. Insight: Jesus had to take upon himself the form of a servant before he could be exalted by the Father, (Philippians 2:7). Jesus took the very nature of a servant as he came into this world to redeem us. Issue: We too have a stewardship based upon a purchase. We are a purchased people who are called to serve our Master, (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)....ye are not your own...for ye are bought with a price... Joseph took serious his stewardship to his master Potiphar. He served to the best of his ability. THE SUCCESS OF JOSEPH In Genesis 39:2-3 we learn of the success of Joseph in his stewardship for Potiphar. The key word is prosper. Joseph was a success in his activities. There are 2 reasons for Joseph s success; 1. The Presence of God - (Genesis 39:2-3) the Lord was with The Prosperity of God - (Genesis 39:3) the Lord made all... Insight: We see a parallel in the life of Joseph and the life of Daniel. Both were taken captive and would end up in a foreign court having great authority. God had declared to Joshua,...meditate...observe...for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous and then thou shalt have good success. (Joshua 1:8).
THE STATION OF JOSEPH In Genesis 39:4-6 we learn of the exaltation of Joseph by Potiphar - overseer Joseph is honored by his master for his faithfulness in service. The entire household was to be placed in the charge of Joseph. The only thing that Potiphar had to concern himself with was his daily meals. Joseph is a challenge to all believers concerning the issue of stewardship before the Lord Jesus Christ. Even as a slave Joseph would seek to serve his master in the following manner. In Honesty In Humility In Holiness God commands his people to serve in a worthy manner as stated in Ephesians 6:5-8. Andrew Murray wrote, I am here by God s appointment, in His keeping, under His training, for His time. Can we not hear Potiphar saying to Joseph Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things... (Matthew 25:21) THE GARMENT OF A SUFFERER Genesis 39:7-20 Joseph, while in the role of a servant, is going to face temptation with the temptation by Potiphar s wife. He will make another change of clothing - From the garment of a slave to the garment of a sufferer. Joseph will be called upon to suffer for righteousness sake. This is a part of life here on earth that all believers must be prepared for as stated by Jesus in Matthew 5: The focus has been on Joseph s conduct but now the focus turns to Joseph s character.
Joseph will be put to the test as was Jesus, (Matthew 4:1-11). Principle: A faith that cannot be tested is a faith that cannot be trusted. The Bible declares, For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted he is able to aid them that are tempted. (Hebrews 2:18) Jesus was tempted in all areas; the lust of flesh, the lust of the eye, and the pride of life. Jesus was tempted but did not yield to temptation as declared in Hebrews 4:15. Taking a stand for God and against sin will cost Joseph his position and his possessions. Let us consider the storyline by observing 3 elements. 1. The Request Genesis (39:7) 2. The Refusal (Genesis 39:8-12) There are 3 reasons for his refusal; first, the trust of his Master second, his own character and third, his love of God. 3. The Revenge (Genesis 39:13-20) Joseph suffers the injustice of being lied about and accused of a crime that he did not commit. He would loss his place in Potiphar s house but he would not loss the presence of God. Doing good got Joseph into prison - sounds strange! The Bible tells us in 2 Timothy 3:12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
