2 2 REFORM AN UPDATE GCSE and A Levels Reform: An Update The first teaching of new A Levels and GCSEs began in September We have been accredited by Ofqual for all of our reformed qualifications for first teaching from September These accredited qualifications are for first teaching in September Background to The Reforms The former Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove, initiated the reform of GCSEs and A Levels in February 2013, asking Ofqual to implement changes that would lead to new qualifications. By reforming GCSEs and A Levels, the Department for Education (DfE) intends to: Make the qualifications more ambitious Better prepare young people for employment and further study Give everyone greater confidence in the integrity and reliability of the qualifications system. The Government has stated that GCSEs will demand more from all students and that the purpose of taking A Levels is primarily for entry to university changes are needed so students are better prepared to start their university course. 3 3 Changes to Assessment New AS Levels The new AS Levels, for first teaching from September 2016, will be stand-alone qualifications in their own right. They will remain broadly at their current standard. There ll be one examination series each year, with the first assessment planned for June The AS Level will not count towards the final grade of an A Level, where assessment of the whole course will take place at the end of two years study. However, we are carefully designing our AS Levels to be co-taught with the first year of the A Level. We ll continue to work with teachers and other stakeholders to learn how best we can support you on this reform. New A Levels New A Levels will be fully linear so assessment of a student s knowledge and understanding of the whole course takes place at the end of two years of study. (There ll be no exams in January.) The first assessment of two-year courses that start in September 2016 will be in June For more information refer to ocr.org.uk/alevelreform First teaching of new A Levels and stand-alone AS Levels in a range of further subjects First exams for new A Levels in a range of further subjects Sept 2017 June 2018 June 2019 First exams for new A Levels in Ancient Languages, Dance, Drama and Theatre, Geography, Modern Foreign Languages, Music, Physical Education and Religious Studies First AS exams in a range of further subjects

4 4 INTRODUCING ANCIENT LANGUAGES CHANGES AT A GLANCE AS and A Level Latin AS and A Level Classical Greek Our Vision OCR is committed to the promotion of the study of Classics and aims to develop high-quality and distinctive Latin and Classical Greek AS and A Levels that prepare and inspire students for further study. By A Level, students are developing the critical analytical skills with which to sensitively engage and evaluate the ancient language. A choice of set texts enables candidates to develop a lasting interest in, and enthusiasm for, the literary, historical and cultural features of the ancient world. Why choose our AS and A Levels in Latin and/or Classical Greek? Our AS and A Levels in Latin and Classical Greek build on the knowledge, understanding and skills established at GCSE, introducing learners to a greater range of vocabulary, accidence and syntax, and requiring the detailed study of prose and verse literature. Our Latin and Classical Greek specifications teach the language skills which enable learners to read both prose and verse texts in the original language. Our aim is to inspire, motivate and challenge by encouraging students to read widely, and gain a deeper understanding of the life and culture of the ancient world. Students are encouraged to make an informed personal response to the material studied, and to analytically approach a wide range of texts. A greater choice of literature will allow you to create the most appropriate and engaging course for your learners. The benefits of our new AS and A Levels in Latin and Classical Greek are: We recognise a greater selection of literature will appeal to teachers and students alike. A choice in both AS and A Level set texts will allow you to change which texts are studied to suit the interests and needs of your students. This flexibility will allow you to create an attractive course of study. There is a focus on analytical and evaluative skills. Your students will acquire the confidence to approach language sensitively and critically. Learners will hone their analytical skills and be intellectually challenged by covering a range of disciplines such as history, philosophy, religion and politics as well as literature. AS Level Latin and Classical Greek provide progression to A Level Latin and Classical Greek. Our A Level examinations build on the content studied for the two AS Level components, meaning that this qualification is co-teachable with the first year of the A Level qualification.

The Literature paper will last for 2 hours. The qualification will be assessed using three Assessment Objectives.
