2 PART I: GENERAL INFORMATION DESCRIPTION OF TOWN - SHORT HISTORY AND LOCATION UNESCO lists Kraków as one of the world s most precious cultural sites. The Royal City of Kraków, for centuries the capital of the Polish Kingdom, is located 219 m above the sea level, in Southern Poland, on the banks of Wisła River, 300 km south of Warsaw, 100 km north of the Tatra Mountains. The population: ca 800,000. The city has a long and eventful history. It was the only major city in the country to come through World War II essentially undamaged. The streets of Kraków s Stare Miasto (Old Town) form a vast and lovely living museum. Its numerous historic buildings, churches, and pieces of art, make it an overwhelming historical gold mine. Northern Europe s largest medieval marketplace, the magnificent Rynek Główny, is dominated by the arcaded Gothic and Renaissance Sukiennice (Cloth Hall), where merchants once gathered to trade goods, and tourist now flock to buy souvenirs. Mariacki Church, founded in 1222, with its majestic high altar, carved by Wit Stwosz between 1477 and 1489, is one of the finest Gothic structures in the world. Wawel Hill is one of the most striking royal residences in Europe. For Poles this is a symbolic heart of Poland, a representation of the nation s historical continuity with its Cathedral, the site of royal coronations and burials, and the Royal Chambers. The Czartoryski Palace houses Kraków s finest art collection, with Leonardo da Vinci s Lady with an Ermine. Kazimierz, the Jewish quarter, founded in 1494, flourished as a centre of Jewish culture, religious study, and trade, as Jews from all over Europe came to settle here. In 1941 the Nazis forced the Jews to move into a ghetto and then transported them to the Auschwitz and Birkenau death camps. Recent years have seen a marked revival of Jewish life and activity in Kazimierz. Located in the outskirts of Kraków is one of the largest European steelworks and a Soviet-era factory town Nowa Huta - built in the 1950s. 15 km southeast from Kraków is the ancient salt mine in Wieliczka a unique phenomenon, as remarkable as the Pyramids and more useful, with its 300 km of tunnels, extending to a depth of 327 m, and 40 chapels carved entirely in salt. Nowadays Kraków is a city of culture and learning, with many institutions of higher education. Additional information may be found on the following web page: - MAIN LOCAL/CULTURAL EVENTS Kraków is considered the cultural capital of Poland. It is the only city in the world where at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries two Nobel Prize winners for literature lived and created: Czesław Miłosz ( ) and Wisława Szymborska ( ). Numerous cultural events are offered all year long. Concert halls include the Karol Szymanowski National Philharmonic, Juliusz Słowacki Theatre, and the Krakow Opera. Stary Teatr, known for its excellent performances, actors and directors, has acquired a status of the national theatre. Films, shown in large multiplexes and small movie theatres, are usually presented in the original language with subtitles rather than dubbed. Summer events include the Days of Organ Music, as well as a world famous and prestigious Festival of Jewish Culture. Numerous pubs, cabarets and nightclubs attract 2
3 visitors from all over the world. - HOW TO REACH TOWN (LINKS FROM THE NEAREST AIRPORT, TRAIN OR COACH STATIONS) Kraków Balice Airport 18 km from Kraków s center. Taxi, bus or train from the airport. It takes about 30 minutes to reach the center. Train station Kraków Główny is a short walk away from the town center. Coach station (Dworzec Autobusowy) across the train station. - TRANSPORT IN TOWN (BRIEF INFORMATION ON THE MAIN MEANS OF TRANSPORT AVAILABLE) A fully developed network of tram and bus lines. The fare (3,80 PLN, as of April 2013) is the same for buses and for trams, and the same tickets are used. Tram and bus tickets are available in kiosks or can be purchased from the driver. You should validate your ticket immediately upon entering a bus or a tram by using one of the ticket punching machines inside the vehicle, also when you change a tram or a bus. IMPORTANT!!! Students (under 26) should obtain their ISIC cards prior to their departure for Poland as they will give them 50% discount on public transportation in Krakow. Taxi: The best way to hire a taxi is to call one of many taxi companies (for instance, 19191, 19626, 19666); the waiting time is 5-10 minutes. When you order your taxi this way, please make sure that you get into the one you have ordered. SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE ORGANISING INSTITUTION The Jagiellonian University, founded in 1364, is the oldest university in Poland and the second oldest university in Central Europe. Located in one of the most beautiful European cities, ancient Kraków, the Jagiellonian University offers a unique opportunity not only to study Polish language, culture and society, but also to experience over 600 years of its history, magnificent architecture, and art. The Jagiellonian University School of Polish Language and Culture, founded in 1969, is the oldest, largest and most experienced in Poland. Over the past 44 years it has welcomed thousands of students, teachers and professors from all over the world. The courses in Polish language are structured in accordance with the level specifications defined in the European Council document Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment; CEFR. THE METHOD: The Polish language programs, the teaching methods and most of the teaching aids used during the courses have been developed by the staff of the Jagiellonian University Center for Polish Language and Culture in the World. The Center is a leading research institution on teaching of Polish as a foreign language. As a result of methodological studies and extensive practical experience of our teachers we have worked out our own method of teaching Polish, which is of an eclectic character. For many years we have been strong advocates of the communicative approach in foreign language teaching, never hesitating to teach functional grammar even explicitly and cognitively if our students needed it. Effective communication in Polish is impossible without a firm grammatical foundation. We have emphasized the need of parallel work on developing all language skills, including writing. Among the applied methods special mention should be made of our task- and project-oriented approach, focused on social interaction and teamwork. - SUBJECT-SPECIFIC LANGUAGE ELEMENTS YES NO (e.g. special modules for students in particular disciplines) IF YES, SPECIFY: Possible to include into the curriculum, depending on the skills and the interests of each particular group of learners. - DURATION 6
