3 Facts about the national collection of newspapers The collection contains material dated from 1645 up to last months newspaper In seize it contain around 130 million pages or then 37 shelf kilometres The collection I build by legal deposit and it grows with around 2,2 million pages a year. We get the head numbers and all the unique pages from all the editions and Sidnummer 3

4 Reformatting the collection Since 1979 to 2014 all legal deposit delivered newspapers have been microfilmed to 35 mm microfilm. The National Library have also in 1979 bought a private microfilm collection containing images off some off the largest Swedish newspapers The library have for a few years microfilmed some historical titles Sidnummer 4

5 Old newspapers in the digital world KB realized already early that digital technique and the transformation of images to machine readable text could provide the users with new ways of access to the newspaper collection. The digital technology's advantages preserve the newspapers' content of information for posterity. More effective registration functions. Increase the search ability of the material. Facilitate the dissemination of information. Create added value. Sidnummer 5

6 The first two steps in the digital world Together with the national libraries of the other four Nordic countries, collaborated 1998 to 2004 in the project Tiden with a focus on the application of OCR and search engines in relation to newspaper digitization. When the project ended we had a small amount of digital newspapers, but a lot of experience from working with OCR. However, the results from the project could not be directly implemented. 7 The first two steps in the digital world In 2008 we began to develop a small digitalization line for newspapers in-house. This endeavour resulted in some digitized pages, which can be accessed today on But the most important part of this project was the conclusion in the final report: If we are to come up in large quantities with good quality the methods tested within the project are right, but it would require a more industrialized production method with more workstations, more staff in the various work processes and additional storage capacity. 8 The third step On the basis of this knowledge we realized that if we would need an external partner specialized in large scale digital production. We found that partner in the Swedish National Archives and their digitization unit MKC (Media Conversion Centre). From 2010 to April 2014 we received economical support from EU s structural program and the local government Västernorrland to plan and implement the production line, specialized for newspaper. 10 What have we build During this period we established an infrastructure for mass digitization of paper based historical and modern newspapers. The goal of the work was to create efficient methods and processes that allow for high quality mass digitization, i.e. finding ways to harmonize quality and quantity. Sidnummer 10

12 Presentation of the digital material KB has developed and implemented an interface for presenting the newspaper material: Today this presentation contains approximately 8,7 million pages. Sidnummer 12

13 The interface

14 Showing with limits Inside the library building the users have access to all the material in the interface because the library has an exclusion in the copyright legislation that allows the digitization of collections for preservation issues. But presenting the digital material to the user outside the library building, is a hard nut to crack. The field of digital newspapers is still young, has not yet found its form, and the traditional marked for printed newspaper s is going down. Everyone is uncertain of what is coming next and the producers are afraid of losing market, and this situation has resulted in a standstill. Sidnummer 14
