2 Mission Statement The David M. Rubenstein/Economic Club of Washington, D.C. Scholarship program is designed to promote and encourage academic excellence for college-bound high school seniors attending District of Columbia public schools. Program Description and Criteria The Economic Club scholarship provides an award of $10,000 to select DC students who have been nominated by participating public high schools. Each school s nominating committee will recommend a maximum of two students to receive the award in accordance with the Award paragraph below. Successful candidates will be chosen by the school s principal and the nominating committee, based principally on academic achievement, with consideration given for other community/extracurricular activities, leadership, financial need, student essay, character evaluation form, and other personal or family attributes. Each award winner will be invited to attend an award ceremony in the spring for the formal awards presentation. Eligibility Students must be enrolled full time as a high school student (enrolled for at least four credits during the student s current and final year) at a participating DC High School, graduate from high school, and plan to enroll full time in college no later than the fall following completion of high school. Students must be a citizen of the United States or be a U.S. lawful permanent resident (or have applied for permanent residence, the application for which has not been denied and intend to become a U.S. citizen at the earliest opportunity allowed by law). Eligible applicants are restricted to students attending one of the 17 DC public high schools listed in the Addendum, or one of the following Public Charter Schools: Booker T. Washington; Capital City, Cesar Chavez-Parkside; Cesar Chavez-Capitol Hill; Friendship Collegiate; Integrated Design and Electronics Academy (IDEA); KIPP DC; Maya Angelou; Options; Perry Street Preparatory; The SEED School; Thurgood Marshall Academy; and Washington Mathematics, Science, and Technology. Applicants must be graduating seniors, who have also applied and been accepted to a degree-granting program in an accredited college or university. Leadership Development Seminars Scholarship winners will attend a series of Leadership Development Seminars to take place in the summer following high school graduation. These Seminars are hosted by select Economic Club members, who invite the students into their place of business for a day of informative education. Past sponsors of our Seminars have included Accenture, AES Corporation, BET Networks, Bingham McCutchen, Capital One, HSBC Bank, Jones Lang LaSalle, and PWC.
3 Award The Economic Club awards up to 47 scholarships to students committed to entering college in the Fall of 2014, and winners will be announced in the spring of Two students will be awarded from each participating DC public high school and one award from each of the following DC Public Charter Schools (with the exception of Friendship and WMST which will select 2 winners): Booker T. Washington; Capital City, Cesar Chavez-Capitol Hill; Cesar Chavez-Parkside; Friendship Collegiate; Integrated Design and Electronics Academy (IDEA); KIPP DC; Maya Angelou; Options; Perry Street Preparatory; The SEED School; Thurgood Marshall Academy, and Washington Mathematics, Science, and Technology. Each winner will receive a $10,000 award. In order to receive their award, Students must be enrolled in college by September 2014, remain in good standing while at the college/university of their choice, and send official transcripts each quarter/semester to the Economic Club for verification. Students will be required to sign a release form that allows the Economic Club or its agents to request and obtain transcripts and academic information from any college or university or education institution that the student attends under this scholarship. Students must submit their completed hard-copy application to their senior guidance counselor by 3:00 p.m. on Friday, February 28, Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.
