General and specific report Insper, Sao Paulo Amber Krake General report 1. host institution and date of semester abroad My study abroad last semester took place at Insper in Sao Paulo, Brazil. From August 11 until December 2 I followed courses which you will get to know in the specific report. 2. contact home faculty, preparation, journey During the exam period in January I was not very focused due to the fact that the study abroad places were to be announced during that period. After many times of refreshing my I got the message that I was going to study at Insper in Sao Paulo. After some days of insane happiness I figured that the preparation had to begin since a lot has to be arranged. You will get a lot of information from Insper about what to send them on course decisions etc. Furthermore, you need to arrange a visit to Rotterdam in order to get your visa. There are many forms to fill out but luckily everything is communicated very well. 3. residence abroad Arrangements visa/ residence permit Arranging your visa is a whole lot of work, meaning you have to travel to Rotterdam and hand in some papers and come back again a few weeks later to get your visa. Note: in the end I received a visa for only 5 months whereas another student from the RUG had 6 months. Because you are only going to study until November and have until the end of January no classes this means that you have to leave the country in between. So just plan some nice trips to other countries after the studying is over ;) Kind of vaccinations and how to prepare the health check There was no specific requirement for vaccinations besides yellow fever which I am aware of. If it is covered by your insurance however you can get all the vaccinations; Hepatitis A+B, DTP and yellow fever. Moreover, bring some malaria pills because if you want to travel to the amazon (Manaus) it is wise to take them. Arrival and departure dates The semester starts in our summer holiday, the week of the 11 th of August and lasts until the 2 nd of December. The other RUG students and I decided to leave the 29 th of July and come back to the Netherlands on the 25 th of January. Accommodation Via the RUG we got in contact with the contact person of Insper, everything was very well organized. We received for instance a list of possible accommodations with prices and contacts. This is really handy and a friend and I contacted a few and got a room because of this list. Do not aim to have a room in the city centre as there is none. There are many different areas which all have their own centre. Some good neighbourhoods are; Vila olimpia and Moema (both close to Insper), Jardim paulista and Vila madalena (a really nice neighbourhood with bars but pretty far away from Insper).

We eventually got to live in a really big house (aka the beach house ; not at the beach though haha but you can look it up on facebook) in Jardim Paulista, with 3 other Brazilians and 1 Italian/semibrazilian. It was located next to the Ibirapuera park and not too far from Insper by bus so we were very privileged! You can contact me if you are interested in a place like this and I will get you in contact with the if they are looking for new roommates, which happens quite often because many internationals stay at the house Reception and introduction Before the first week of the classes started we got to meet Insper s contact person, Edson and had a guided tour at the university. Apart from this not a lot is organized for an introduction. Student life, culture and leisure Student life in Sao Paulo was just a-ma-zing! Insper is very small compared to the RUG so you will get to know a low of Brazilians too and besides that there are monthly parties organized which are really great! Also, other universities which are bigger have a lot of parties like FGV and USP, definitely go there! One downside is that you have to pay to get in the clubs, especially if you are a guy but if you are a girl you can put yourself on the VIP list by ing (also look on facebook for contact) and then it is either cheaper of for free. The culture in Brazil is also very open, everyone wants to invite you to parties, beach houses (yes a lot of wealthy students at Insper) etc. so you feel at home right away! You will never get bored in Sao Paulo! Language Language is definitely an issue outside Insper, since no one speaks a word of English. So it is handy to know the basics, although all the students at Insper speak English very well! 4. grant You will receive approximately 1100 euro s, of which 800 before you leave and the remaining 300 when you get back. Furthermore, if you have an average of 7 and above you are able to ask for a grant from GUF which is around 300 euro s. The flight tickets are approximately 850 euro s if you are willing to attend an indirect flight and some extra waiting hours. Before going to Brazil I expected it to be cheaper than the Netherlands but this turned out to be quite disappointing in the end. Overall, the rent of your room and food at supermarkets is the same as in the Netherlands (although you can eat out around 4 euro s and sushi is only 12 euro s for all you can eat so prepare to get addicted) but clothes such as at Zara are double. You can go to a market nearby Insper which is a lot cheaper than in the supermarkets and better quality. Also, going to the clubs costs money (10/15 euro s to get in) but Vodka is only 2 euro s so that is a good deal haha! 5. study As I already mentioned, the courses start the 11 th of August and end the 2 nd of December. There will not be specific division between lectures and tutorials like here at the RUG, on the contrary, you have work groups twice a week per course which include the professors lecturing and making assignments. In between you have a long weekend off but there are no other holidays. However, it is very easy to skip classes and many professors also do not mind because they know you are in Brazil not only to study. The exams are twice, at the end of Spetember and the end of November. Overall, the courses are a bit easier than at the RUG but very practical so that is really nice. With

regard to the organization it must be said that Edson, our contact person at Insper, arranged everything very well and also made sure we got all the information we needed. I have chosen for the following courses; marketing B2B, environmental analysis II, decision making and negotiation, political economics and behavioural economics. 6. summary impression Overall I had an great great time at Insper but also in Brazil in general. Everyone is very social, there are awesome parties and clubs and the weather is really good! Furthermore, the classes are really active and different from the RUG which I liked. Lastly, although more expensive than Asia it is a great place for backpacking with a lot of different places/ people and nature so go go go! Specific report 1. host institution and period You will be studying at Insper for a period of 4 months from August 11 until December 4; this applies to all the courses discussed below. 2. lectures and literature For every course you will have 2 classes per week of 2 hours. In total you will have 20 hours of which you can skip 25% per course (around 10 in total). Furthermore, below are the basic readings; there will be more papers/ cases for you to read but this depends per semester and week. - Brennan, R., Canning, L., & McDowell, R. (2011). Business-to-business Marketing. Sage. - Ellis, N. (2010). Business to business marketing: Relationships, networks and strategies. Oxford University Press. - WILKINSON, Nick An Introduction to Behavioral Economics. New York : Palgrave MacMillan, Camerer, Colin; Loewenstein, George; Rabin, Matthew, Advances in Behavioral Economics. New York : Russell Sage Foundation, DIAMOND, Peter ; Vartiainen, Hannu, Behavioral Economics and Its Application. Princeton University Press, Thompson, Leigh - The Mind and Heart of the Negotiator; Prentice Hall, 2000 (3rd edition, 2005) - Shell, G.Richard Bargaining for advantage (Negociar é Preciso); Negócio, 2001

Analysis of the economic environment II - ROMER, D.Keynesian, Macroeconomics Without the LM Curve. NBER Working Paper Series,January BLANCHARD, O J.Fiscal Dominance and Inflation Targeting Lessons from Brazil. MIT Working Paper 3. overview of lecture programme Timetable for the preparation and material for each lecture week changes per semester and there is no specific overview I was aware of. However, there is some material to cover every week e.g. presentations and simulations. You will not have to make assignments from a book. The first week of the semester you will receive all the information needed. 4. content It is important to note that this is a Business to Business marketing course which is different than marketing focused on consumers like you and me. The operations are much bigger in business market than in consumer markets. Thereby business markets are very complex, and buyers behave differently since their role is way bigger. During the classes business relations and the importance of networks and how to promote your products towards other companies and not towards the consumer itself was discussed. Furthermore, differences with B2C were discussed. This course discusses the theoretical foundations of behavioural economics and its empirical applications in different fields; decision making under risk and uncertainty, social/ justice preferences etc. Furthermore, implications for public policy are discussed, integrating economics, psychology and sociology. This course resents conceptual models, tactical approaches and self-assessment tools to help you develop your negotiation skills. A lot of classroom experiences in negotiation are used as well as case studies to negotiate on; overall it is a very interactive class since successful negotiation skills do not come through passive learning This course combines economics and political science all together. The economic aspect looks at the result of public policy and political science mostly looks at collective choice and political institutions. We mainly discussed why voters vote and how they vote, what influences their choices and how to make people vote. At the beginning we were going to have this content the entire semester, however, due to a lot of calculations many people complained. Eventually, the professor changed the content of this course for the second part which then was about law and economics. Analysis to the economic environment II This course specifically is about practical analysis and interpretation of the short run movements of the economy. You will analyse what is happening in the world (international context) with regard to

monetary and fiscal policies, currencies, external sector and the global environment. Therefore you are really up to date with what is happening economically throughout the world. 1. Level of Activity: the real side of the economy. 2. Employment and Income. 3. Inflation and Monetary Policy 4. Public Finance and Fiscal Policy. 5. External Sector and the World Economy. 5. lecture- and activities A lot of simulations were done during this course which was really interesting as you will be a manager of a company and have to make decisions and see how this affects your revenue/turnover etc. just like a real company. Furthermore, some case studies will be required as well as a presentation focusing mainly on consumer segmentation, targeting and positioning. For this specific course you have to write a paper and present on specific topics such as; survey of behavioural finance, behavioural development economics, behavioural law and economics, neuroeconomics and behavioural design. Also you are asked to write a few reaction papers (1 paragraph) on topics like this in order to develop your own opinion. Since you will only learn from this course by practicing every week you will have to read a case and prepare yourself to negotiate with someone else about this. You will have to establish what you want to get out of the negotiation, your compromises etc. in order to get the best deal for you. For this course you do not have to do an awful lot, only one case essay and presentation based on a topic of your own choice. Analysis of the economic environment As an assignment you will be divided in groups and present about specific aspects of the economics environment. 6. relevance to RUG programme During the IB programme we have some material on marketing, however, this is specifically business to consumer marketing whereas this course is all about business to business. Therefore, this course sheds a whole new light on marketing and covers different theories/ approaches. This course is very different from the once you have had during the IB programme at the RUG since it mainly is about your opinion and your reflection on different topics related to behavioural economics. Two essays have to be written which should really reflect your own opinion based on papers you will have to read.

This course was the most interactive course I have ever had at the university and therefore really different and fun. If you are following honours college you can compare it a bit with debating however this is all about finding a compromise and the best one for you. In the programme of IB there is another course with the same name, however, it covers completely different aspects so there is no overlap. This course is specifically on politics in different countries and not so much on different theories behind political economics. Analaysis of the economic environment II This course was the best course I have had during my study International Business. Mainly macroeconomics is discussed and it is very much focused on the day to day changes in the economy which is really nice. Furthermore, the teacher is really good and helps you out in every possible way. This course is definitely way more advanced in economics than all the other IB courses so you will learn a lot! 7 + 8; study load and assessment For every course 6 EC s where to be obtained. Study time before the midterm: 25 hours Study time before the final exam 25 hours Time with other students (incl. team assignments): 20 hours Study time before the midterm: 20 hours Study time before the final exam: 20 hours Assignments individually: 5 hours Working with team members (incl. team assignments): 30hours Study time before the midterm: 1hour Study time before the final exam: 1 hour Reports on cases: 20 hours Working with team members: 2 hours per week during the negotiations Study time before the midterm: 20 hours Study time before the final exam 25 hours Working with team members: 10 hours Analysis of the economic environment II Study time before the midterm: 30 hours Study time before the final exam: 30 hours Working with team members: 10 hours
