1 Nursing - Bachelor's Degree Programme Credits: 180 credits Grade name: Bachelor i sykepleier Full-time/Part-time: Full-time Lower cycle degree: Yes Language of instruction: Norwegian Introduction The programme is offered as a full-time programme over three years with start-up in the autumn. The degree Bachelor in Health Studies qualifies to apply for license as a nurse. The Bachelor s Degree Programme will give the students theoretical and practical competence to practice nursing. The "Framework Plan and Regulations for 3-year Nursing Educational Programme" (set down by the Ministry of Education and Research on 1 December 2005) describes the newly qualified nurse s competence as a totality of knowledge, attitudes and skills and involves the independence to be able to function and deal with patients and their relatives.. GOAL AND PROFILE OF THE PROGRAMME The central task of nursing is to promote health and relieve suffering. The University of Stavanger s vision is to challenge the familiar and research the unknown. For the Bachelor Education in Nursing, this involves immersing oneself in and challenging the limits of nursing s core activities: care and the distinctive character of man - the inviolability of life. Health is a priority area for both the Department of Health Studies and for the University of Stavanger. The Bachelor in Health Studies connects health research particularly to user participation, promotion of health and acute and critically ill patients. These areas are reflected in our professional profile in relation to both education and research. The programme s view of humanity is founded on central values of Christian, humanistic and biological origin. Man is considered unique, and life is inviolable. Nursing s core values are mercy, care and compassion. The care builds on professional judgment, and in the care, the nurse must stress the patient s experience in the situation. Much emphasis is therefore placed on co-determination and opportunities for the patient s growth through user participation and promotion of health. Professional nursing competence builds on a totality of knowledge, attitudes and skills. In addition, development of the nurse s moral responsibility towards the individual and society is considered an important goal. Insight and understanding are developed through knowledge, reflection and critical thinking, and in interaction with the patient and their relatives. The programme s affiliation with the University of Stavanger implies an obvious scientific emphasis. Simultaneously as the practical activity of the subject is valued and attended do, the students will also utilise an academic approach to the subject of nursing. page 1

2 B-SYKEPL - Nursing - Bachelor's Degree Programme WORKING AND TEACHING METHODS Knowledge is developed through intellectual, social and emotional activity. Nursing knowledge is developed in the interaction between theory and practice. Working and teaching methods will be characterised by a variation amongst lectures, group-/study group work, written assignments, oral presentations, supervision, clinical practice and simulation and skills training in the training laboratory and on SAFER. Private study is a necessary working method to attain the objective of the programme. The programme is time-consuming, where the individual courses are connected and build upon each other. The estimated study effort is 40 hours per week. Teaching activities are organised during both the daytime and evening. During its thee years, the programme has 50 weeks of direct patient-oriented clinical practice connected with the Community/Public Health Service, specialist health care and mental health work. The study period in clinical practice is organised over the entire day and all weekdays. The student follows the working hours for the field of practice and must follow rotation. The students participation in practice will on average amount to 30 hours per week, but a total of 40 hours study effort per week are also expected in this period. It is difficult to combine the programme with permanent work or other time-consuming activity. DIFFERENT PROGRAMME REQUIREMENTS AND FORMS OF ASSESSMENT Written examinations, take home exam, portfolio assessment. The grading scale from A to F is used on these examinations. Practical/oral examination and clinical practice are assessed as "Pass"/"Fail". Credits are used as guideline expressions for the extent of study effort and depth. Diplomas are issued to students who have completed the Bachelor Education in Nursing. Admission Requirements Higher Education Entrance Qualification. Admission information Annual admission. This competence implies that the student is professionally qualified to practice the nursing profession in accordance with relevant laws, rules and guidelines for professional ethics. Bachelor in Health Studies qualifies to work as a Licensed Nurse within public and private businesses. The programme qualifies for admission to Master s Degree Programmes and post-graduate studies in health and social care. Some extension courses will require professional experience as a Licensed Nurse. Course assessment Student assessment of the courses in the programme will be conducted in accordance with the Faculty of Social Sciences assessment system. Study Abroad Student exchanges in the 4th, 5th and 6th semesters through the Nordplus cooperation programme to different institutions within the Nordic countries, and through the Erasmus cooperation programme in Europe, the Czech Republic, Belgium and Portugal.
