1 Literature Extension I WISH I HAD GLASSES LIKE ROSA QUISIERA TENER LENTES COMO ROSA Subjects Math, Language Arts, Social Studies, Art, Science, General Math 1. Have students create a graph of how many children in class have glasses. Make comparisons from the information on the graph, such as How many more boys than girls have glasses? Have students make math problems from the information on the graph, such as There are 4 girls with glasses and 6 boys with glasses in my class. Ask students, How many more boys than girls have glasses? or What is the percentage of students in class who wear glasses? 2. Bring in an assortment of old glasses and sunglasses. Have children sort them (by color of frame, thickness of lens, etc.). Language Arts 1. Why are glasses referred to as a pair of glasses? Have students list other things that come in pairs and put the list in alphabetical order. 2. Abby wishes she had glasses. Have children use the sentence starter I wish I had to write a story about themselves. 3. Creative dramatics: Have children act out their favorite part of the story, using glasses as props. 4. Have the children practice reading aloud the Spanish/English vocabulary lists at the end of the book to learn new words. Social Studies 1. Have children find out about famous people who wear (or wore) glasses. Have them choose one and make a report or poster about that person. 2. Have children find out about the history of glasses. When were they first invented? Who invented them? 3. Rosa s best friend thinks Rosa s glasses make her look beautiful. Ask the children to name something that they really like about a class friend? Have them write a compliment to that friend on a strip of paper. As a class, create a paper chain of compliments to and from each other. Drape the chain around the classroom. (Continued)

Choose colored cellophane to make the lenses of their glasses. Have them decorate the frames any way they like. Science 1. Have children borrow the glasses from someone who used different color cellophane and wear both pairs of glasses at once. Ask what they discover about the new color? (Teacher: This can also be part of Art Activity.) 2. Have children research and diagram the human eye. How does it differ from the eye of a cat, a fly, etc.? General 1. Invite an optometrist to visit your class and talk about why some people need glasses. Create an eye doctor center in the classroom with an eye chart and other pertinent items. Discuss the various types of eyewear and eye protection that people use, i.e., safety glasses, goggles, reading glasses, magnifying glasses, etc. 2. Have children follow the recipe in Activity #2 for Abby s Sparkle Clay to make glitter glasses like Abby did.

Try making your own glasses like Abby does. Sparkle Play Dough is a fun scent sational alternative to clay. Ingredients 5 cups flour 6 Tbsp. vegetable oil 1 cup salt 4 pkg. Kool Aid 4 cups boiling water Abby s Sparkle Play Dough ***CAUTION: THIS IS NOT EDIBLE*** Directions 1. Mix all dry ingredients together. Add the oil and boiling water. Stir until well mixed. 2. Knead and shape dough when cool. 3. Add glitter and other fun things (buttons, feathers, etc.) to your scented Play Dough creation! 4. Keep in a closed container and use over and over again.

Introduce variations of domino and dice games, but link them to the book by calling them Freckle Dice and Freckle Dominos. 2. Laminated Face Math Story Boards Have several laminated pages depicting a simple line drawing of a face. Have younger children choose a number card and add that number of freckles to the face (with chocolate chips, small tokens, etc.). Have older children choose an equation card, solve the equation, and add the correct number of freckles to the face. Have children work in teams one team member puts a number of freckles on a blank face. The other student creates a mathematical equation that incorporates the total number of freckles indicated. 3. Start with the basic recipe for Rosa s Chocolate Freckle Pudding included in this Activity packet. Have students determine how the recipe would change if they were making pudding for 2 people, for 8, for 12, etc. Language Arts 1. Have students research and write a report on an animal, fish, or insect of their choice that has spots. What purpose do the spots serve? (crossover with science) 2. Have students write a poem or greeting card about friendship. 3. Have students practice reading aloud the Spanish/English vocabulary lists at the end of the book. How many new words can they learn? Have students create ALL ABOUT ME posters, including things such as a self portrait, favorite things to do, information about their family, things student is good at, and three wishes. 2. Have each student write one wish on a slip of paper. Put all slips in a wish box, and each day read one of the wishes. Students guess to whom the wish might belong. 3. Abby s best friend thinks Abby s freckles make her look beautiful. Ask students to think about something that they really like about a class friend and write a compliment to that friend on a strip of paper. As a class, create a paper chain of compliments to and from each other. Drape the chain around the classroom. Art 1. Have students draw a picture or make a model of the animal selected for the spotted animal report (see Language Arts). 2. Have younger children make a self portrait and add freckles and then tell (or write) what they think about how they look with freckles. Science 1. See research report idea under Language Arts. 2. Have students research the reasons why some people have freckles and others don t.

6 I WISH I HAD FRECKLES LIKE ABBY QUISIERA TENER PECAS COMO ABBY Rosa s Chocolate Freckle Pudding Recipe Rosa mixes it up to get freckles for herself. Rosa s chocolate freckle recipe is better for eating than for making fake freckles. INGREDIENTS 1 small box (3.9 oz.) instant chocolate pudding 1 3/4 cups milk 2 Tablespoons peanut butter 1 Tablespoon warm tap water DIRECTIONS 1. In a small bowl, mix together the peanut butter and warm water until the mixture is smooth. Add a tiny bit more water if necessary. 2. Put the milk in a medium sized bowl. Add the instant chocolate mix and the peanut butter mixture. Stir for two minutes (a wire whisk works well for stirring). 3. Pour the pudding into small four dishes. Wait five minutes to let the pudding set before eating. Yum!! *Makes 4 servings.
