3 The Junior University at a glance The Junior University is conducted since 2005 by the University of Porto (Portugal) Basic and secondary level pupils U.Jr. Vocational orientation U.Porto Promotion of higher education and knowledge-based careers Introduction to specific scientific areas or topics A glimpse into everyday life at the 14 schools of the University Several learning programs and small research projects are annually designed by university lecturers and conducted by hired monitors, undergraduate and graduate students or junior researchers.

5 The 2015 program MAIN THEMATIC AREAS AND OVERALL STRUCTURE Arts 22% Sports 3% Science & Technology 43% Humanities 17% Economics, Law & Social Sciences 7% Life Sciences 8% Even though all U.Porto s schools propose at least one program for the U.Jr., the main focus is on science and technology activities. The programs were proposed mainly by U.Porto but also by other institutions, such as science centers, museums, research institutes, House of Music, environmental education centers, etc.

25 Into the University, Out to the City We encourage some specific topics or pedagogical approaches, and noticed a definite trend among lecturers to propose activities that use the urban and natural surroundings as subject. More often than not, juniors will visit a particular place and then work on the subject in the university facilities, especially if a lab of some kind needs to be used, but in some cases the activity is mostly conducted outdoors.
