3 P a ge 3 The 10 Things Every Diver Should Own (Besides a mask, fins, and snorkel) Diving is awesome, we all know that, but since science doesn t yet have a way to put gills on humans, we need gear to let us breath. Obviously, our life support equipment (tank, regulator, BCD, etc.) is very important, but it s the little things that count too. Here is a list of the 10 best dive accessories that every diver, beginner or experienced, should own. Safety Sausage When it comes to safety, a signal tube is a great accessory to have. Made in bright colors and of various sizes, these safety devices are perfect for flagging down the boat in an emergency. They easily clip to your BCD or fit in the pocket and come with a whistle. Don t leave home without it! Log Book Binder Perfect for keeping the memories of those awesome dives safe and dry. Fit several small log books or lots of extra refill pages into one consolidated place. They also have spots for your dive cards so you wont lose them. Dive Light Even if you aren t a night diver, a light is a great accessory. Use it to peek under coral heads or in rock crevices to find the shy creatures that like to hide. These days, they make lightweight rechargeable lights that are easy to pack and perfect for activities outside of diving like camping and biking. Nitrox Card Okay, so maybe this isn t exactly an accessory, but having a nitrox card will still make you look cooler than all the divers around you diving only air. Classes are easy and don t require any time in the water. (we offer them twice monthly). Enriched air will increase your allowable bottom time so that you can have extra time to enjoy the underwater scenery. Exposure Protection Floating jellyfish tentacles, fire coral, sunburn, and chilly water temperatures can all ruin a good dive if you aren t prepared. Exposure protection options range from dry suits to rash guards. Don t know what suit is right for your diving? Trust the IS store staff to fit you with the perfect piece. Buckle Strap These quick-adjust neoprene straps add plenty of convenience and comfort without that annoying hair pulling. Gentlemen, these are good for you too. Avoid those unsightly red lines on the back of your head caused by a traditional silicone strap. Get everyone in the family a different color and you now have an easy way to mark everyone s personal gear. Camera Show off your mad diving skills and all the cool things you saw with an underwater camera. GoPro and Sea life are great options no matter if you want to shoot photos or video. Throw in a Digital Underwater Photography specialty class to look like a true professional. Traditional sports duffle bags may seem like a good option, but your gear isn t drying properly which can shorten the lifespan of the item. Plus, the inside of the bag gets pretty smelly after having wet scuba gear in it. Clips, Snaps, and Buckles One of the biggest threats to the health of our coral reefs is dangling gear. Make sure your alternate air source, dive computer and accessories (like lights and cameras) are secured close to your body. There are lots of options to choose from including bungees, retractors, and snap bolts. A Dive Computer A dive computer is probably one of the most important items a diver can own. Sure, it s a bit of an investment, but with the compact size, advanced technology, and affordability built into today s dive computers, there s really no excuse not to have one. With features like depth and time alarms, no decompression limit alarms, and ascent rate alarms, dive computers are designed to keep you as safe as possible so that you can enjoy many more dives to come. Then I married a certified diver whose father is the most awesome instructor!!! Number of years diving? Number of years as professional? How many dives? Less than 1 year of diving. Definitely not a pro. 32 dives to date and counting! What brought you to International Scuba? JIM CLINGMAN!!!! (My father in law) Tell us something about yourself that your diving friends would be surprised to learn. My nickname is Piggy. If you could leave tomorrow to live in the islands where would it be? Cozumel, Tulum, Roatan, or Fiji!!! I would be happy with any of those. What is your oddest diving experience? I m relieved to say that I haven t had one yet. What is the one tip you would like to share with a new diver? Don t be scared. Diving is easy! If you were to come back as a fish in your next life what kind of fish would you be?
