MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT VEHICLE POPULATION AND INTERNATIONAL TREND BY: MR. ERIC TETTEH-ADDISON SEPTEMBER,

OUTLINE Introduction International trend Vehicle population in Ghana and regional statistics Implication of growth in vehicle population Way forward 2

INTRODUCTION Ghana s Transport Sector is made up of the following modes: air, inland water, maritime, rail and road transport. The dominant mode is road transportation which accounts for over 95% of all transport services in Ghana. Freight and passenger services are provided largely by private sector owners and operators. Some Government Agencies such as Metro Mass Transit Company (MMT) and ISTC Coaches Ltd also provide an extensive network of urban, intra urban, inter-city and ruralurban bus services. 3

Introduction cont. Over 80% of the Government's annual budget for the transport sector is channeled into road infrastructure investment Yet this investment is not able to adequately cater for the transport needs in the country. This is due to rapid population growth and urbanization As population grows travel demands also grow because the demand for transport is a derived demand Consequently, cities in urban areas are faced with an increase in urban mobility demand 4

Introduction cont. These demands are neither supported by existing facilities or infrastructure nor by any car-centred policies Economic development has historically been strongly associated with an increase in the demand for transportation It is believed that the state of a country s transport system is a reflection of its economic growth and development The population and economic growth in the urban cities in developing countries has led to rapid urbanisation and increase mobility demand culminating in rapid motorisation 5

INTERNATIONAL TREND Car ownership in developing countries is increasing in alarming rate due to economic prosperity The speed of vehicle ownership in developing countries has important implications for transport and environmental policies, as well as the global oil market. A research by Ward Auto, on vehicle-population trends, indicated that global vehicle registrations jumped from 980 million units in 2009 to billion in The world vehicle population in 1986 was 500 million but passed the one billion-unit mark in 2010, ie just 24 years later 6

International trend cont. The BRIC countries Brazil, Russia, India, and China added about 14 million cars to their circulation in 2010 alone In 2008/2009, the percentage increase in vehicle population was 1.9%. This however increase to 3.6% in 2009 and Thus the total number of cars in the world as at 2010 stood at 1,015,260,827 7

International trend cont. The market explosion in China played a major role in overall vehicle population growth in 2010, with an increase of about 27.5 percent in registrations. Vehicle people ratio in 2010 was roughly 1:6.8 compared with 1:6.6 in But the distribution was not equal, even among the biggest markets 8

International trend cont. Highest household owner is found in the developed world in the past but this is strongly being challenged by the developing economies Brazil experienced the second largest volume increase after China, with 2.5 million additional vehicle registrations in

LOCAL TREND The vehicle/population ratio in Ghana has been growing steadily from 31 vehicles per 1,000 population in 2002, to about 44 vehicles per 1,000 population in It is estimated that, Accra has the highest number of registered vehicles of 605,739, followed by Tema 256,956 and Kumasi 200,116 as at March Total number of registered vehicles population in Ghana as at March 2012 stood at approximately 1,425,900 10

Local trend cont. Current records indicates that in 2009, 83% of vehicles imported into the country were used cars (second hand) 94% and 97% of older vehicles accounts for freight and traffic movement respectively. This has worsen the ambient air quality particularly in urban and densely populated areas. 11

Way forward Transport planners in developing countries require innovative solutions; this is because transportation services produce unwanted by-products such as air pollution, global warming, accidents and congestions and that rapid motorisation contributes a great deal to these problems. 20

Way forward cont d Improve our Public Transport system Develop the other modes of transport particularly rail and inland water transport Introduce demand measures for car acquisition and traffic management Land use and planning (only help to manage the situation) 21
