1 Hanze university GRONINGEN annual report
Hanze University Groningen, Annual Report is online! 2009 was the year that Hanze University Groningen developed a new, widely supported strategic policy plan for the next five years Roadmap to Excellence. In the first six months of 2009 we prepared this policy plan, both within the university, involving staff and students, and with our stakeholders in the region and beyond. The process consisted of dialogue, horizontal responsibility and working together for the future of the university through debates, interviews and surveys. 2 In the new policy plan we continue down the path we have already mapped out which will take us up to We are steering a course for quality, for intensive collaboration with partners in the region, and for practice-oriented research and internationalisation. Choosing Healthy Ageing and Energy as knowledge spearheads also ties in with developments in previous years. We have opted to position Hanze University Groningen as a European University of Applied Sciences, which is anchored in the region but whose significance stretches beyond regional level. When we set up the Hanze University Foundation in 2009, this reinforced the university s social commitment. Applied research in 2009 was mostly conducted in the six Centres of Applied Research and Innovation, by 56 PhD students, almost 700 undergraduate and postgraduate students, over 30 professors and a wide range of partner organisations. At Hanze
University Groningen, applied research is always interwoven with education, most notably in our master s degrees. In 2009 the NVAO (Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders) accredited two of the university s new master s degrees: the Master of Architecture and the Master of Advanced Nursing Practice. The sixth Centre of Applied Research and Innovation at Hanze University Groningen was set up in 2009: the Art & Society Centre of Applied Research and Innovation. Here too, a link was forged with the Healthy Ageing knowledge spearhead, by conducting research into the ageing population and the role of music, within the framework of lifelong learning. In 2009 Hanze University Groningen received funding for research by applying for grants through schemes like RAAK (over 5 million euros), Kompas and Koers Noord (over 3 million euros), SME Innovation Vouchers (35,000 euros) and others including EDGAR formerly GRASP (over 1 million euros). 3 Hanze University Groningen was the first University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands to receive a grant of 2.4 million euros through the national Sirius programme in 2008, for the purpose of creating our excellence programme, which led to multiple activities in The new Professor of Talent Development in Higher Education and Society, Marca Wolfensberger, put together a research group in 2009 based around the professorship, made up of PhD students and other university staff who are conducting research into this area. To promote excellence in education, the schools began setting up scouting and honours programmes, to encourage an ambitious study culture in every respect, under the title Shine!.
Consequently, in 2010 four Shine! minors were developed as optional courses. 4 For the School of Fine Arts, Design & Pop Culture MINERVA, in 2009 Hanze University Groningen purchased the monumental museum building which was previously home to the Groninger Museum and the Museum of Natural History on the Praediniussingel. Here we are going to combine education and work spaces with public functions that befit the history of the building. This building, the existing Academy Minerva building on the Gedempte Zuiderdiep and the School of Built Environment on the Zuiderkuipen together make up an arts triangle. This new cultural quarter ties in perfectly with the programme to enhance the Museum Quarter and the Museum Trail in the city of Groningen. Hanze University Groningen continued to grow in 2009, both in terms of the number of students from the Netherlands and abroad, and the number of staff. Thanks to the ambition, effort and commitment of all the staff and students at Hanze University Groningen, together we are now able to create the ideal knowledge community we described in the Roadmap to Excellence. The Executive Board sincerely thanks everybody for their individual and collective contributions to our University of Applied Sciences. Groningen, June 2010 on behalf of the Executive Board, drs. Henk J. Pijlman, chair Hanze University Groningen is partner in City of Talent
Highlights 2009 Art & Society Centre of Applied Research and Innovation working with Sarajevo In 2009 Hanze University Groningen got its sixth centre of applied research and innovation: the Art & Society Centre of Applied Research and Innovation. Lead professor Rineke Smilde and research group member Evert Bisschop Boele from the Lifelong Learning in Music & the Arts professorship travelled to Sarajevo for the first time in 2009 to support the conservatoire there; they will be visiting more regularly in the coming years. The Sarajevo conservatoire is still experiencing problems as a result of the Balkans conflict. Many of the lecturers left during the war; some did not survive the conflict. Therefore, there is now a major shortage of qualified lecturers. The Art & Society Centre of Applied Research and Innovation is making great efforts to link up the conservatoire in Sarajevo with lecturers from other European Union countries. Rineke Smilde and Evert Bisschop Boele are also advising the conservatoire about joining the European higher education structure. 5 Welcoming days for new foreign students Hanze University Groningen wants to increase the intake of foreign students and is working hard to create good amenities for them. Giving them a warm welcome is a top priority. In 2009 the reception of foreign students was given an added dimension with university-wide welcoming days, held twice a year. During these days the Executive Board officially welcomes all foreign students and those students follow a programme of workshops and social activities. There is also an information market about all sorts of practical matters.
6 University of Applied Sciences Roadmap to Excellence is the title of Hanze University Groningen s new strategic policy plan, which was established in In the years to come, practice-oriented research and internationalisation will become increasingly important. This will enable the university to evolve into a respected European University of Applied Sciences. Expanding practice-oriented research and interweaving it with our courses are key to achieving this goal. Research at Hanze University Groningen takes place within the professorships, of which there are more than thirty, and the six Centres of Applied Research and Innovation. Later in this brochure you can read more about what happens in the Centres of Applied Research and Innovation. Social commitment: the Hanze University Foundation Hanze University Groningen is working proactively to obtain funding for higher education projects in developing countries. This is why, in September 2009, the Hanze University Foundation was set up. The main aim of the Foundation is to offer vocational education to young people in developing countries. Moreover, the Foundation is calling for Hanze University Groningen staff and students to demonstrate their social commitment. At the same time, the Foundation offers students and lecturers the opportunity to develop their intercultural skills by participating in international development projects. Leading excellence Shine! In 2009, Hanze University Groningen was the first University of Applied Sciences able to set up a complete excellence
plan, with a grant from the national Sirius programme. Profiling the university on the basis of quality and talent is also a central theme in the new Roadmap to Quality strategic policy plan. This expressly states that the university wants to better serve talented students with honours programmes, selective minors, selective specialisations and individual learning routes. By 2015, 5% to 10% of students should be participating in this type of programme. This policy does not only give additional opportunities to talented students, but also promotes an ambitious study culture which ultimately benefits all students. Smart systems for energy use A consortium led by the Hanze University Groningen Centre of Applied Research and Innovation - Energy received a grant of 1.8 million in 2009 for Flexines, a research project that is developing an intelligent energy infrastructure for the market. The aim is for the (sustainable) energy sources to soon be used in the most advantageous way, without the user having to worry about it. Refrigerators, wind turbines, boilers and the electricity grid will be continuously interacting with each other to find the best way of meeting the needs of the user at any given moment. To achieve this, intelligent management systems are needed, which act like a kind of brain, directing all the energy demands and supplies. The Hanze University Groningen Centre of Applied Research and Innovation - Energy is developing this brain and working on the communication between the various devices and users. All of this is providing a wealth of innovations, 7
and giving the North Netherlands a distinctive profile. Flexines is also specifically intended to be an incubator for new and existing entrepreneurs. Furthermore, and this is a significant point, the Hanze University Groningen and University of Groningen courses directly involve students in innovation and research. This is crucial for the future. 8 Entrepreneurship is something you can learn The Starter career is an activity through which Hanze University Groningen s Centre of Applied Research and Innovation - Entrepreneurship encourages entrepreneurship among students. This is done through a cohesive programme of educational and support activities. Students are made to think about their own personal profile and their development into an entrepreneurial professional or professional entrepreneur. In their study programme majors they then get the opportunity to work on a business idea. Students can also create business plans for their own companies within the framework of various minors, including Business Class, Da Vinci, Business Plan Factory and Your Own Paramedical Business, and even start up their own companies. If they are actually setting up a company, Hanze University Groningen offers them the opportunity to use the business spaces and facilities in the CUBE050 incubator or in a specialised incubator for sensor companies like Assensor in Assen. Healthy Ageing: a northern partnership spearhead In conjunction with the Groningen University Medical Centre and the University of Groningen, in 2009 Hanze University Groningen extended the Healthy Ageing
theme even further. A spearhead of the new Roadmap to Excellence strategic policy plan, a university-wide programme is being developed which integrates applied research and education. One example of what is possible is illustrated by the PhD studies of lecturer Paul Hodselmans, who is a member of the Transparent Care professorship s research group. For patients suffering from non-specific chronic lower back pain, for whom recovery can be extremely difficult, the PhD student designed a psychophysical lifting capacities test. These patients have limited physical capacities, but what impedes their recovery above all is that they do not have a clear sense of their own boundaries in terms of what they are physically able to lift. The tests designed by Paul Hodselmans helped to create a good recovery programme and clearly identify which treatment strategy to pursue. 9 SMEs: clients and partners of the Centre for Applied Labour Market Research and Innovation European borders may be breaking down, but it is still not that easy to attract workers to the Netherlands. To improve the situation, in 2009 the Centre for Applied Labour Market Research and Innovation developed a tool with the aid of a RAAK-MKB (RAAK-SME) grant. With a number of regional partners the Flexicurity professorship, led by Professor Harm van Lieshout, created a special website: This site, which was launched by SER (Social and Economic Council of the Netherlands) chairman Alexander Rinnooy Kan, offers detailed information in a user-friendly way about the
fiscal, employment law and social security aspects of working with people from other European countries. The website is targeted at SMEs, and people like helpdesk staff in employers associations and trade unions. 10 Living environment research Area development is also a hot topic in the North Netherlands. An area with relatively few inhabitants, few employment opportunities and plenty of space, pressure on that space is nevertheless increasing, so an important quality of the region is at issue. For this reason, in 2009 the NoorderRuimte Area Development Centre of Expertise and Innovation set up the Living environment research unit, one of four research units in which professors, lecturers, students and industry professionals work together. They are investigating whether it is possible to develop new concepts for villages so that they become attractive and remain so in the future. How people rate their homes and residential environments is the key theme in this research unit. Like the Healthy Ageing spearhead, this project also focuses on the built environment and the residential needs of the ageing population. In 2009 research was conducted into, among other things, generating additional revenue streams in rural areas, modern care farms, the leisure needs of elderly people and a sustainable village concept.
Mission Hanze University Groningen in Road to Excellence, 2009: Hanze University Groningen, University of Applied Sciences, with a European perspective on higher education, aims to be the main partner of the businesses and institutions in t he North Netherlands for educating professionals and developing relevant, practice-oriented knowledge.
