2 Imagine how far a Junior can go and how much she can do for herself and the world when she has confidence. - amuse (It s Your Story-Tell It! A Leadership Journey) The mission of Girl Scouting is to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. Building girls confidence is the goal of amuse, the It s Your Story-Tell It! Leadership Journey for Juniors. Why Self-Esteem Matters! High self-esteem is linked to confidence and other positive benefits for girls Health Happiness Athletic ability Academic achievement Social skills Self-esteem means how a girl feels about herself her abilities, her body, her capacity to seek and meet challenges in the world. On average, the self-esteem of Junior-age girls is relatively high. Keeping your Juniors self-esteem high is one of the goals of the amuse Journey; that way, you can help girls avoid the drop in selfesteem that is so typical in young teens. Outcomes (What???) Outcomes are the answers to What difference does it make? They are the changes, benefits, knowledge and other effects that happen because of what you did (or what a girl does.) Outcomes are what a girl will be able to do as a result of an activity or learning experience. Outcomes are the promise we make to girls about how they will grow through their Girl Scout experience. The activities in this module can be the starting point for helping girls understand these outcomes that are part of the Discover key to leadership: Discover Outcome 1: Girls develop a strong sense of self. They have confidence in themselves and their abilities, feel they are able to achieve their goals, and form positive gender, social, and cultural identities. Discover Outcome 2: Girls develop positive values. They form their beliefs and values based on the Girl Scout Promise and Law, learn to consider the 2

3 ethical aspects of situations, and are committed to social justice and community service and action. You are welcome to print out the following pages as a mini-booklet for girls, or as individual hand-outs to use as a pre-meeting activity. You may hear a lot about self esteem. But what is it? Put simply, self esteem means how you see yourself. If you have high self esteem it means you think you re okay. You have confidence in yourself and your abilities. You re generally happy with the way you are. If you have low self-esteem you might not think you re a great person with lots of talents. But guess what? You ARE! You have the power to do anything you want. The only thing standing in your way is your low self esteem! Let s look at what all this means. A good way to think of self esteem is by thinking of The Five Senses, (this time we don't mean taste, smell, sight, hearing and touch!) Here are the five senses" of self esteem: Security (how safe you feel) Belonging (connecting yourself to others, like friends and family) 3

4 well) Competence (find something you do well or want to learn to do Identity (who you are and what you stand for) Purpose (what makes you happy?) Writing your thoughts and feelings down about each of these senses, in your own journal can give you a good idea of areas you could improve your self esteem or areas where you already feel great. Many girls think self- esteem will magically come to them. Not so! To develop healthy self esteem you need to practice. Think of it this way...how do you become good at swimming? You guessed it - practice. How do you become good at playing an instrument? Right again-practice. Even if you re feeling down, you need to go through 4

5 the motions of practicing liking yourself. Your body and mind will eventually come around. Remember...EVERYONE, no matter how good they may usually feel about themselves, gets down sometimes. Here are some ideas on how to help improve your self esteem. Get physical- run, dance, swim, walk, play outside- getting your heart pumping works wonders! Find a private place and meditate, take a long bath, dance and sing to your favorite song. Discover things that make you feel good about yourself that don t involve buying some product spending too much money can make you feel bad about yourself. Discovering things within YOU is is a great way to help you feel your best! Volunteer. Helping others allows you to become a strong young person. It makes you feel worthy and competent, and is a great way to change the world. Write in your journal five things you like about yourself. Even if it becomes the same thing every day remember, practicing good self esteem is what s important, because eventually you ll feel it. Surround yourself with supportive people. If there are friends or family who cut you down, don t be afraid to speak up for yourself. When people cut you down, it s often a reflection of how they feel about themselves- it has nothing to do with you! Turn the television off and stop reading 5

6 teen magazines!!! They too often promote false images and negative messages about what you should look like. You already look the way you should at this time in your life only YOU decide what you think is cool, no one else decides that for you. FROM: Self Esteem: Give Ourselves A Hand! TIME: minutes MATERIALS: paper and pencil ACTIVITY: Sitting around a table 1) Have each girl trace her hand on a piece of paper, and write her name on the lower right hand corner. 2) Each girl passes her hand tracing to the girl on her right. Now everyone has someone else s hand; she writes a specific, personal, compliment on the other girl s hand tracing. The compliment can be one word or sentence. 3) When the leader says, Time, ( Pass, Next, etc.) the girl pass the hand to the right again, where a new compliment is written. This continues around the table until each girl gets her hand back. One rule: The word nice may not be used. Tell the girl what you think is nice about her. Encourage the girls to share their hand with their family. Could they do this as a family activity? 6

7 PERSONAL COAT OF ARMS/WHAT YOU STAND FOR Think about yourself, your friends, and your family. Who are you? What do you stand for? Answer these questions, then use your answers to create family crest. Draw a shield or crest (see examples above) and decorate it with symbols, colors, and words that show who you are. 1. Think of three or four qualities that represent you, such as: loyal, smart, brave, wise, funny, strong, honest, helpful, respected by others. 2. Select an animal that represents one or more qualities, such as: an owl for wisdom, a lion for bravery, a snake for respect. 3. Select one or more colors to represent your qualities. 4. Make up a slogan or saying for you or your family. Examples: Honesty and intelligence are our goals. or We have love. or Almost always laughing. 5. Put everything together and write, draw, and color your crest or coat of arms. Put the symbols, colors, and words together in a special way. And be proud! Shield Symbols: In the Middle Ages, knights displayed some of these symbols on their shields: Crescent (always with the horns pointing upward) = victory over adversity Eagle (usually with wings spread) = magnanimity and strength of mind Falcon (usually seen looking to the right of the shield) = bravery; undertaking arduous tasks Fleur-de-lis (a stylized lily) = bravery and a noble spirit Griffin (half eagle, half lion) = valor and vigilance Hand open = generosity; closed = strength Leopard (sometimes seen walking, but usually just a face) = wisdom and agility Stag = purity and strength of will Pheon (head of a dart or arrow) = speed and directness Sun (usually shown with a human face) = splendor and royalty 7

8 Heart = loyalty and love Tower (ancient symbol of defense) = strength and protection The Special Person Club GOAL/OUTCOME: To help group members realize we are all very special in out own ways and deserve to be in The Special Person Club. MATERIALS NEEDED: Club Application (below), pencils or pens. ACTIVITY: Hand out the applications and have the girls complete them. Let them have a chance to look back over it. After they have reviewed their completed applications, discuss with them how they now feel about themselves. PROCESSING (Suggestions for discussion): What makes you special? Is everyone special in her or his own way? What kind of requirements are there for being in The Special Person Club? Who sets these requirements [Themselves!] Do you need other people to tell you you re special in order to feel special? Source: Prevention Is Primary (PIP) 8

11 You Deserve A Medal! Design a medal that you would like to win for excelling at something difficult to do. What do you have to do to win this medal? What would you like to get really good at? What s your proudest moment from the past? What will be your proudest moment in the future? 11

12 Speaking From the Heart Who are you? How can you tell the world who you are? How will you discover and develop your talents? Here are some ways that people share their ideas and talents with other people. Make them your own! What would your dream t-shirt say? What book would you like to write? What award would you like to receive? You re going to make a speech. What will be your most famous quote? Choose another way to show who you are. On the back, write what you will do. 12

13 Winning Reminders All people, even those who are the best at what they do, make mistakes. When you have strong self-esteem, you are able to hear criticism, learn from your errors, and still feel good about yourself. Girls with strong self-esteem know they can t make everyone happy all the time. They are true to themselves. Girls with strong self esteem work to change the things they can change and accept the things they can t change. When work gets tough, they double their efforts. When other people don t always approve of them, they understand they no one is wonderful in everyone s eyes. When girls with strong self-esteem have teachers or parents with problems, they are able to turn off the bad things said to them. They don t accept words like lazy, stupid, and careless just because a powerful grownup has said that to them. They understand that adults who say such things really have bigger problems that have nothing to do with her. Girls with strong self-esteem * do lots to reward themselves: watch a favorite TV show or video, walk, bike, play a sport, call a special friend, listen to music, start a new project, tell themselves great job! * help other people * choose to be responsible * allow time for fun Adapted from: Smiling At Yourself, by Allen N.
